I did not use this in a car, but in a high-end sound system for church services. There was a loud hum from my PC to the sound board and the ground loop isolater from RadioShack took the hum completely out. I expected it to diminish the hum, not take it out completely. Pleasant surprise.

This unit interfaces perfectly with ANY standard and high end Car Audio System, unless, of course, you have a hacked and ham fisted uneducated unconventional install - then you will be in adapter hell - again. Install it correctly the first time! Don't buy Junk!
The noise filtering(Suppression)of this unit is as good if not better than some of the high end units. Good Job R.S.

I have been connecting a laptop to an audio receiver for use in a home theater when streaming video. The AC adapter would send an annoying hum and screech when attached to the laptop. This little gem worked like a charm. The 1/8 inch adapter was a nice freebie too. Male to male connections, though, so make sure you use it in the right application.

I have a guitar effect box that one end was connected to an instrument amplifier, the other end to a laptop USB port for recording audio on the computer. When I plug in the laptop power supply, it generates a strong humming noise in the instrument amplifier. As soon as I removed the power supply, all was quiet. Since I can't run it on battery whenever I'm doing recording, I searched around the internet and found this ground isolator device. I bought it, connect it between the instrument amp and the effects box, the noise was immediately cut off. Amazing. Works as advertised. (Has not confirmed if there's loss in audio fidelity, though).

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Using one of these Ground Loop Isolators with a Mini Recorder Control (43-1237), a 1/8" phono coupler, and a 1/8" phono (mono) to dual RCA adapter, I am able to easily record and hear phone calls through my computer. Bravo for Radio Shack adapters!

I docked the product 1 star because it only comes with 1 RCA-to-phono adapter. In order to use the Ground Loop Isolator between my computer and a Mini Recorder Control, I needed 2 additional adapters. Fortunately, they all work brilliantly.

Didn't solve it, but new RCA's did!
By ed from Brooklyn, NY on 12/7/2007

I took the thing back, and bought short shielded
RCA's (Radio Shack's Gold Series) to replace my old
ones, and that completely eliminated the noise --
even though i'm almost completely sure the problem
was ground loop. (unplugged off one of the components,
and noise was gone)

Bottom line -- go for more shielding if you can.
It's more expensive, but worth it.

This device is used between the laptop I use for shows and the mixer. It is not necessary at some venues I service however it's better safe than sorry. This device will also serve some protection aginst a power spike in the audio lines or shorts from component to component.

If you still have hum or hiss after installing this or you loose any aspects of your music or audio program the fault is typically somewhere else in your system. Check other connections for proper polairity and that they are clean and make good contact. It can also be possiable that you need more than one down your audio path.

I purchased this to resolve a groundloop problem I was having with a device I use on my computer for recording my own guitar music. I shopped around and found this was the cheapest audio isolation transformer I could buy, so I wasn't expecting much. Well, I am happy to say this thing works beautifully. My noise issue is gone and doesn't degrade the audio even when playing full range, commercially produced songs through it.

In regards to the ...
By Stephen L from Orlando, FL on 4/27/2007

In regards to the previous comment about losing the vocals & bass frequencies: use a continuity tester to double-check the wiring & adapters. That situation will occur when your left & right signals are summed to mono, and one of the left/right signals is also out of polarity with regard to the other (signal & ground are reversed on one of the two channels). Depending on their quality, an isolation transformer (what this device is) may slightly reduce the very high or very low frequencies, but won't eliminate bass frequencies, cut vocals or change the stereo "image". Look for a reversed cable or incorrectly wired adapter somewhere. Best of luck to you.

I have a 2007 lexus is 250. I had a stereo store install my sirius sportster through the ipod port. I was getting a high pitch humming noise that no one could figure out (it got louder as i accelerated). Finally, someone at radio shack suggested the ground loop isolator. They hooked it up directly from the sirius to the ipod jack, and it completely eliminated the noise/feedback with no loss of sound quality. great product!

I use this on my home ...
By Andy S from DC on 9/13/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Reliable

I use this on my home theater system which has a grounded receiver and a grounded tube amp on the same circuit. Even though I use a power conditioner which eliminates a lot of the hum, it's still very noticeable. Unfortunately, this isolator product cuts the signal level significantly so that I must turn the tube amp really high to match the receiver's multi-channel output. This causes the tube amp to produce a noticeable hum which kind defeats the purpose of the isolator. It also creates a dangerous situation if I forget to turn the volume level down before switching to another input on the tube amp. Beware of the other reviews which say it doesn't degrade performance - it most certainly does!
