Comments about RCA ANT1650R Flat-Panel Antenna:

Rebellion against the cable machine's exhorbitant cost and bad programming. I have a bigger selection of PBS channels than with cable - all in crystal clear digital without all the cable reality nonsense.

Comments about RCA ANT1650R Flat-Panel Antenna:

RCA does not specify the dB gain of this antenna. There is a channel signal strength meter on our Aquos TV and comparing the signal strength to another less expensive antenna that claims 20 dB gain, the RCA antenna must have only 5dB gain. The reception on this antenna is so poor it could not pick up CBS about 22 miles away, but did receive another channels but not as many as the other antenna. Also the stand is poorly designed, it won't hold the antenna upright, but at an angle that allows the antenna to easily topple over. Also lacks a power indicator light. It's glossy plastic so it shows every fingerprint.

Comments about RCA ANT1650R Flat-Panel Antenna:

In my opinion this product DID NOT WORK. In the same location via the same wires, a preexisting antenna works much better, receiving 22+ over-the-air channels. By contrast, even after many efforts to fine-tune the direction in which it is pointed this RCA antenna received only 10 channels.

Comments about RCA ANT1650R Flat-Panel Antenna:

Proper position gets great results. When flat up against a wall was not so good. Flat up against a window was better, but not much better surprisingly. Flat in front of a window with a 'view' of the direction where local transmitting antennas works good. The antenna has 6 feet of cable and a booster. When the cable was running up vertically in front of the window also in view of the antennas, the reception was much better. I also have 25' of additional cable that is connected to the booster and it did not affect it negatively. With the antenna flat in front of a window and the cable also in the 'view', reception is very good.

Comments about RCA ANT1650R Flat-Panel Antenna:

I agree with Broadcast Fan on all points. Just adding that I used the TV Signal Locator Tool at the TV Fool web site to determine which signals I could possibly receive before purchasing a antenna. I am renting a second floor bedroom in a two-story home on the south side of the house. I discovered that the nearest signals from the major broadcast networks to my location were on average 25.5 miles away coming from the north. So the entire house is between me and the signals I am trying to receive. There are no other nearby outside obstructions except for other houses, well apart from each other, and trees in the neighborhood. This info helped me decide to purchase this particular antenna since it has a signal amplifier which I might need. As it turns out I did need it. The antenna is capable of being set up and used without the amplifier so I tried that method first. I was able to pick up the channels I wanted but at very weak signal strength according to the meter on my TV. I then added the amplifier and found that the signal strength improved enough that I was able to pick up the signals I wanted plus some extra signals which were 40 miles away - as long as the weather is good. The closer signals (25.5 Miles) remain good even in stormy weather. In all - I am receiving 23 digital channels which I think is pretty good for living out in the country.

It did not work for me but I am not going to write negative comments about it, because you can`t complain that water is wet. This antena is good for somebody who lives up to 15 miles away from tower. I am 17 miles away from chicago tower and I was occasionally losing signal.

After trying a few locations in the house, placing it next to the window in the living room worked the best. You have to scan the channels each time to see if it picks up new channels in different positions, but overall very easy to set up. The design is nice because you can position many ways to get the best signal.
Also works in the upstairs bedroom.

We live in San Diego burbs 92127 but can now get all the major local stations.
The picture is so much clearer than cable--

Comments about RCA ANT1650R Flat-Panel Antenna:

The RCA ANT1650 amplified antenna works quite well in my location and neighborhood environment. I receive 16 primary digital channels and 42 channels in all, counting the sub-channel streams. The ANT1650 improved reception for all channels to about 90% signal strength, according to the monitor on my Zenith digital converter box. Channels that sometimes pixelated or dropped out altogether with my previous antenna have been boosted to consistent reception.
I placed the ANT1650 on top of a bookshelf in the living room, six feet above the floor. I oriented the flat panel with the longer dimension standing up: | and placed it perpendicular to the signal paths, using the included stand to tilt it back, in this way: \ <--- signal.
I'm in the Chicago broadcast market, about 9 – 10 miles away from the towers for most of the stations I receive. That's pretty close range; so I cannot say what a *maximum* usable range might be for this unit. The environment is a top-floor apartment in a three-story building of wood and brick construction in a low-rise neighborhood of similar buildings.
With my previous antenna, the Radio Shack ATV 1000 (an amplified UHF/VHF/FM model from 2001), some channels fluctuated precariously between one-half and three-quarter signal strength. Reception was not consistent and often required fiddling with the gain control and repositioning the antenna loop element. Although the gain on the ANT1650 is not adjustable, that also means I don't have to fiddle with it! Like the old antenna, the ANT1650 may require directional adjustment to optimize reception, and a small change in placement can affect signal strength. However, once I found the "sweet spot," I have not had to reposition it.
Other points: The ANT1650's coaxial cable and connectors are tinny, not of top-notch quality. The cable connection to the antenna panel is set inside the panel, so it isn't detachable. The separate amplifier box is placed somewhat awkwardly in-line with the coax cable, and you have to connect the cable from the antenna to the amplifier box, and then connect the cable from the amplifier to your TV or converter box.
I also considered the RCA ANT1450, but nowhere on-line, including the RCA products Web site, could I find adequate or accurate specifications (panel size, amplifier gain, etc.) for comparison with the ANT1650. After actually seeing the ANT1450, I found that the ANT1650 has a significantly larger panel area, measuring an additional 1 – 2 inches per side. It's possible the smaller ANT1450 would have worked for me, but after various attempts to find a better antenna, I was happy to spend a little more for the ATN1650.
