The unit works great for basic use, but can not be automated. The stop feature keeps turning it off when you try to connect it to an automated switch.

Changed layout again (not good)
By Halloween HackerVerified Reviewer from ca on 10/5/2008
Cons:
Does Not Work Well
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The Play button STOPS the sound when pushed more than once. For robotic use this is very bad as now extra circuitry is needed to trigger the sound without stopping the sound as well. May be ok for use with Micro controllers but very bad for Relay Logic systems.

Has Been Better
By The Chaz from Mpls, MN on 7/10/2008
Cons:
Poor sound quality
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have used this product in applications in the past and it has worked great but it has been changed. The sound quality is horrible and the playback volume is nearly inaudible. The previous version had a separate microphone as well.

The newest version if this product is basically useless to me due to the poor quality. PLEASE bring back an older version!

Terrible Sound Quality

They just changed the design (2008) of this item to a ridiculously noisy Chineese array and amp. The previous design, with the same item number 276-1323, was much cleaner. The model before that, 276-1326, was even cleaner yet. These recording modules just keep getting worse! Don't plan on using this item for science or electronics projects, just for basic speech.

Adding Sound to a Model Diorama
By RotteedadVerified Reviewer from Arlington, TX on 3/16/2008
Pros:
Easy To Use, Fun
Cons:
Low Sound Volumn
Best Uses:
Home
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Cool gadget. Easy to use and small enough to hide in my diorama. Wish we could increase the volumn without tearing it apart and adding an amplifier.
Otherwise a real treat, keep making them so I can get more.

This model is like the original voice recorder module that was discontinued ten or so years ago in that it's got a separate microphone and 16 ohm speaker. It can be easily amplified and switched by a dry contact relay. Please don't discontinue this model.

Definitely works

This thing definitely works. However, I bought it to hack it -- I wanted to force the unit to loop the sample, which was possible with older revisions. I'm tinkering, but has anyone figured out how to do this with R3 boards?

It works completely as described and do not have any complaints on it from that aspect. I just wish the speaker, which doubles as the microphone could be a little louder. I had to hold it up to my center channel speaker and had the sound as high as I could push it to where you could hear the sound on the recorder within a 7 foot range. Other than that, I am very pleased with it and will be buying more for my projects.

By Gene H from `Marshall, MN on 7/10/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Good performance, Good Value, Reliable

This is a great unit. I use it to provide sound effects with my animated woodcarvings. One improvement would be to be able to access the contacts to the switch that plays the sound so I could activated it with another switch more conveniently located.
