These travel well, in addition to being useful at home. I use one for my laptop on the road, as well as my mp3 player and speakers. At home, it is useful for plugging in rechargables, such as a cell phone, and is also good for other powered goods. It does not replace a surge protector for high end items, like a TV or stereo. However, since my home unit is plugged into a surge protector, I feel safe in using it for those times when I want to use the laptop.
