No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The control buttons are too subtle to the touch and placed in non-intuitive order. Finally had to put adhesive tape over the on/off button to avoid accidentally pressing it. Vertical LED display impossible to see unless you tilt the machine and peer closely -- it should light up. After about 6 months the "Back" button would instead turn the volume way up. Power button finally failed completely. Trashed it. Good riddance.

I've had this boombox for 2 years now, and the sound is very full and nuanced, but of course it's a Sony! It's got great features, including a tape deck hidden in the back (hard to find boomboxes with tape decks anymore), and has been rock-solid reliable. A great all-around boombox for those who don't need advanced features.
