You get what you pay for..not beautiful to look at but does what they say it will do. Biggest complaint is that tha batteries go dead in less than a day!!!
Thank goodness for weather radios and I don't mind this one during the day but not at night. I wish you could program to your county only, but it does all the closest surrounding counties also. I wish you could adjust the alarm volume because I keep it in my bedroom and when it goes off during the night it scares you and you can't get back to sleep and goes off for everything. I like it loud during the day when I am busy doing things but at night it can wake me up sufficiently without being so loud. The few storms we have unplugged it to take it in the basement, if I forget to plug back in the batteries are dead within a day. It does do it's job though and warns us well.
My house was struck by a microburst ten years ago, and since I live in a rural area, I am a bit skittish when it comes to summer storms. Due to that history, I like to have a weather alert radio close at hand, having a RadioShack Model 12-262 in the kitchen, and a RadioShack Model 12-382 in my bedroom. I purchased this Midland radio for use in my den, and so far this summer, it has missed every warning that my two RadioShack radios have picked up. The NOAA tower is seven miles away, so signal strength should not be a problem. Based on this radio's performance, I would not feel safe, if I had need to rely on this radio alone.
Sorry, I just can't recommend this radio.
Every summer we have hundreds of kids come through our cabins at camp. Every summer we use this product to keep those kids safe. It has protected us though high winds, tornados, severe thunder storms etc... Because our staff stay in the cabins with the kids, these radios have to be tough enough to withstand abuse, dampness, and unreliable power. Get one and if you use it correctly, you won't be too sorry.
this radio was good at first until i took it camping and the ac adapter no longer worked without AA batteries, then the batteries would on last a little while because the weather button would no beep on or the radio would just turn off. the alarm stopped working and only works in the afternoon and only gets reception in the afternoon
It's a good radio but I don't know how to set the alert volume.
I would say that you are a very special cookie if you have your life on the line and only spend [$]. Then to continue to complain how you bought a moderate radio at a moderate price but expect $200 performance. The radio does a nice job for the price you pay.
the owner's manual is very helpful with great tips how to work this weather radio as well. my midland weather really does work really well for me. this is a great price to buy it. this is the best weather radio i have ever had in my life. i have never had a weather radio at all in my life. i love this handle light weight weather radio. this makes a great gift to everyone and anyone who wants one. this is a great product too. I only had this midland radio for a few days too. i'm still trying this product out too. so far, i really do love this product. i bought this at walgreens store near me too. it comes in handy when there is a power outages since it does required 3 AA batteries too. u can take this anywhere too.
This radio is not to be relied upon for life safety applications, as it does not reliably trip for SAME coding. There are 2 of these at work, and one at home, and it's a gamble as to which one will go of and which ones wont. I'm within 15 miles of the NOAA tower, and have a crystal clear signal, but yet have a 1 in 3 success rate for various watches and warnings, and it's never the same radio that picks up the warning. In fact it didn't trip for a watch #616 issued 42 minutes ago. If ignorance is bliss, this is the product for you. Shame on Midland for touting a life safety product that just doesn't work. It's a good thing that they don't make smoke detectors.
You can buy this at many other places for [$].++
I bought this midland WR-100 because I wanted a SAME weather radio. When I first opened the package I noticed a yellow slip saying, Your WR-100 has been updated so test alerts are now only in text. That's nice, so I am supposed to sit and watch it on every Wednesday between 11AM and noon to see if it works properly?!?!?!?! How about giving me an option on that! Ok, now I set it up and press the weather botton. The voice comes in loud and clear. Everything is good. Wednesday roles around so I set up my walkie-talkie that has a weather band so I don't have to sit and watch to test it, which is an incredible waste of time. 11:10AM and the walke-talkie blasts the test siren. I go over the WR-100 and NOTHING is happening. Slightly mad, I contact midland and they tell me to unplug it and remove the batteries. During the next's week test it responds like it is supposed to.IMO, it should work out-of-the box and not require a reset. Everything it fine for a while, until one day the display goes blank. Totally blank, with the backlight on. A couple hours later and it is working fine again. It did it again just a few days ago. Now that clock doesn't keep time. It gets a few minutes behind after a week or so. Come? on, how hard is it to have a clock that keeps proper time???? A little thing that bugs the daylights out of me.
That is all of the bad parts. The good side it that has a nice loud siren that will wake the dead, good clear speaker, easy to find AA batts for backup, easy to read display, and nice big antenna.
The bottom line is: it is a good radio that has usability issues. Good if you just want to check the weather and receive non-live threatening alerts. If you want a weather radio that can save your life, than upgrade to the WR-300
I live in Alabama, where a weather radio is a must. Mine quit working and I had to buy a new one. I unfortunately chose a cheap model and will be returning it this week! It does not pick up any stations!
So far it hasn't failed to decode any alerts, as far as I have noticed. Then again I've only had it a few weeks now.
My main complaint is that, while you can program which counties you want to receive alerts for, there's no capability to chose which type of alerts it sounds the alarm for (and the alarm is very loud). Frankly I don't want to be startled awake for a severe thunderstorm watch and I don't know who would either. I'm just going to go back to sleep until a warning is issued anyway. Would be nice to only be alerted to tornado warnings.
Another issue is if you want to program your county and the counties to the west, and your county is in the western part of the coverage area, there's nothing you can do. Not really the radio's fault, though.
All in all, if it had additional programmability for which alerts to receive for which counties, it would be perfect. But as it is now, I have to leave it off most of the time, not very effective that way.
This radio WILL NOT pick up NWS alerts! I have the cheap-o SIMA First Alert radio sold here at Radio Shack, and it ALWAYS sounds it's alarm when a warning is issued, and it's a flimsy cheap radio! I paid $40 for this Midland piece of junk, and it won't do what it's advertised to do! The whole point of having a weather radio is to have it alert you when NWS puts out a warning! While my cheap SIMA sounds it's alarm for all to hear, the Midland WR-100 just sits quiet like a dumb fool! I live well within the area of my NOAA transmitters coverage, so there is no excuse for this! How can a company put out something that WILL NOT work. The sad thing is, they KNOW it doesn't work!
We use the product to be alert to the weather conditions so as to remain as safe as possible. Both from the human standpoint and property standpoint.
I bought this radio from Radio Shack. The S.A.M.E technology works flawlessly. During last night's severe storm outbreak it alerted me each time that the Weather Service updated its warnings for MY county, not everywhere around like most weather readios.
midland has done it again but putting out another fantastic product keep up the good work.
from kevin scruggs
When I first brought it didn't went off at all for my county but for a county 50 miles away. But after setting the S.A.M.E codes it works like a weather watch-dog, it informed me about Tornadoes in the area 7 hours before a Tornado was spotted in the next county to me which perpared me for later on when my county had a tornado warning. Ever since I listen to it everyday just to check in.
BAD RECEPTION DURING AND AFTER AN ICE STORM.
BUT I SWITCHED WEATHER STATION FOR ANOTHER AERA
WORKS FINE AFTER THAT.
We have this radio in each of our bedrooms (have used them for over 2 years), as well as carry one in the truck for storm season!
Have given them out as gifts even to our family... one of the best gifts that we could think of.
I've taken three back for diffrent problems. One had no sound, one had no display light and one just didn't come on. Now it's time to get a refund.
The thing just won't work!

This Midland All Hazards Radio is small but full featured. You can put this unit anywhere in the house. Very clear display and the buttons are spaced apart for ease of operation. This is a must in todays weather environment. It's a great addition to my radio communications station.

Works great! Yesterday in Wisconsin we had severe weather! I'm from Milwaukee so i set all the counties in the viewing area. Well at about 11.30 AM there were warnings to north. And the radio beeped. This is a great lifesaving product.

I work with the NWS as a weather spotter and this is the best tool anyone could have.
We live in the country where storms can get pretty bad, so I wanted a weather alert radio. My husband bought this one for me. The alarm is so loud when it goes off you can hear it anywhere in the house, it's location is in our bedroom. Last night we had some real bad storms roll through the area and it went off three separate times, one with a tornado warning. I was able to get my kids out of bed and downstairs in plenty of time. If you want something that will wake you up in the middle of the night if need be, then this one is great. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I purchased this radio to alert me primarily of thunderstorms and lightning so I could disconnect my outdoor Ham Radio antenna's before lightning would enter my area. I am quite disappointed with this unit for the following: 1. It has missed every alert though my area does give the SAME alert data burst. 2. You can not program just for certain types of alerts. 3. There is no alert volume. 4. A strobe light is made for this for visual alerts, however when this is used, you lose the audible alarm (this is one reason I wanted this radio, thought I could have both audio and visual but later found this not the case after purchase). I had what I thought was considerable research into this radio, actually had it special ordered through radio shack as they longer stock this unit, but am to say rather disappointed in this radio, Midland and my research just the same. I am going to return this radio and try most notably the Radio Shack Radio Model: 12-262, it does have somewhat better reviews and can be programmed for specific alerts to avoid unwanted alerts. It is good for a weather radio as others have said, but for an "ALERT" radio, I'm disappointed as this has never alerted me. I am confidant that the radio is programmed correctly as I have a knack for this kind of stuff while living on the highest point in my county, reception should not be an issue no matter where it is placed, therefore, most notably a weak radio reception is the real issue and culprit with this radio. I am confidant an external antenna would fix this reception issue, but should not be needed, especially where I live, but if I am going to do this I might as well try the other radio rather than have another antenna to add to the mix of others. Seems there is no magic/silver bullet in getting the perfect radio with all of the features I am looking for, but in this day of sophisticated electronics, it seems as if the entire weather radio industry is lacking and in need of some attention and review and upgrade. I am really surprised to have this reception issue especially with a Midland.
BEST OUT THERE !!!!! I Get my info 5 min before tv Stations
Works oaky with ine VERY annoying quirk. When alerted, the tone goes off for a few seconds, then the radio switches to voice so you can hear what the warning is for. However, after the warning announcement, it does NOT switch back to alert mode. You have to do the MANUALLY. If it goes off in the middle of the night, you have to get out of bed and reset it.
We have several of these at work. Good strong signal from the local NWS transmitter but they miss 75% of the alerts issued. If severe weather is anticipated, I bring my own personal weather radio. It has never missed an alert and it's a portable! Bottom line: Good for listening to the forecast but don't trust your life with it!
This radio does what any weather alerting radio should do. It gives an alert that will get it noticed followed by the information. As with any weather radio reception is key. There is an external antenna available if reception is poor. This is a fine radio that does what it's supposed to do and the price is right.
this radio just does not work, it will not do test alerts, it will not alert you of any advisory's.if you are going to buy it do not use the county code feature.just the freq.otherwise it's dead in the water.
Great Prouduct,Always Goes off for extreme weather,Maybe alittle too much, but i wish it went off for winter storm warnings for winter so i dont end up have 3 feet of snow on the ground when i wake up
Like another reviewer stated, it would be nice to have a volume control on the alarm, as it's pretty loud for a small room. I generally just leave it on "display" mode as I'm a pretty light sleeper anyway and thunder would awaken me before the alarm sounded. I have had problems with the unit not resetting itself after an alert has expired - the warning lights would stay on for hours, even days (once when I forgot about it) after the alert was over. All that worked for me was to pull out a backup battery and disconnect the power cord momentarily, which then means that you have to re-set the clock. I contacted customer support and they told me that it does happen sometimes, and what I did to reset it was the only solution they knew of. Kind of annoying. I have also experienced times where we have had a storm warning for our county and the alarm did not receive the message, despite having the proper SAME codes installed. I did get a very good price on the system due to a local news station subsidizing them at area stores, but even without that discount it's still a good deal and a good basic-use weather radio.
This weather radio works fine, but I wish I would have understood that it did not have 2 features that I need. The first is a dial volumn control for the siren. It only has buttons to toggle down to 3 or 4 different volumns, but it does not go quiet enough for me. The second feature that I must have is the ablity to program WHAT alerts you want to receive. The other day at 4 am I received a 'high wind' alert. I didn't need to be woken for that, nor did my 3 and 8 year old (because the volumn was to loud!) I would also block the thunderstorm warnings. Otherwise it goes off too much, 24hours a day. I miss my last radio that had these features...that 3 year old broke it, though.
this weather radio keeps me safe from bad weather.
this is a nice item has not failed in letting me know when weather conditions are a threat.
small LED light only works part of the time. Alert alarm does not sound with every watch or warning..not dependable. i tried two different radios both had similar problems.Would not try another of same brand.
this weather radio keeps me safe.
This multi-alert radio should be in EVERY household. It could just save a life.
This is a must. A very good price. Comes with a cord to plug it in and also battery backup. Large LCD Display will give you the information before the tones are done and the weather service starts talking. I like this becuase this gives those added seconds to start preperation in the event of an emergency. It is easy to use and also easy to program for your area. The tones are distinct and will wake you up if needed. Also has 3 small LED lights that will let you know what you are facing, Warning, Watch, or Advisory. Great Buy!
