This radio is perfect for families and friends. It is easy to use with many features to stay in contact with the people you know and block out traffic from other stations. Grouping is one of the amazing features that makes it worth buying. It is important to remember that this and ALL portable radio's will only reach the highest range in the clearest conditions. If you don't live in a dessert don't expect that you will be able to get an 18 mile range. This is typical of all portables. This one is the best out there.

I've had a GMRS license for a few years now. In that time, I've had many radios, but these things take the cake. A quarter mile away the signal was so bad I couldn't understand a single word. At 1 mile, I didn't even get so much as a break from the radio silence as he opened/closed the mic. We ended up having to use cellphone to communicate. What a piece of junk, don't buy these. You'll regret it, I'm taking them back in the morning.

This product is used to communicate in the home and from base camp to hunting blind. I was impressed with the range even in hilly terrain. It is a little like Timex "takes a lickin and keeps on talkin".

Started to break up at half of a mile completely gone by one mile. Not nearly what I had hoped for. Reasonably, I thought I should be able to expect 3 to 5 miles and that would be fine although way short of the advertised 18 miles.

I Have bought this radio for the wife and grandchildren to use when we go to the mall. I have had a GMRS License for over 30yrs and have a number of larger radio's with more power but when the grandchildren are with us do'nt want them to have the bigger units they cost to much. as for range MAN you can not expect a radio with low power or even on boost and a small antenna to go 18miles with out a repeater ok.

Great range, long battery life. I even used GMRS without a license. Imagine my surprise when it worked fine. :)

I bought 2 of these units, one for myself and one for a friend. Both units are a huge disapointment. Works as advertised EXEPT the range. 2 miles max, also on GMRS with Boost. And I'm using them outside a city in flat land. Worthless.

Pros:

I like these radios. The license is easy to get from FCC. I really like the scramble feature. They are a smidge bigger than your average GMRS radio, but not unacceptable. Not so sure about the 18 mile rating, though. Lots of good features.
