I can not relate to the problems listed on here. My set came already charged from the factory. I was able to start talking right away. I sent my daughters out 2-3 blocks in separate directions. No hint of distortion or loss of audio.I bought them to use in case the family separates in the shopping centers or stores. No problem so far. The range IS limited but I figured that right from the start. I love being able to switch the battery packs out and use AA batteries. I use Duracell 2650 Mah batteries that you can buy right from [...]. The only gripe is that the radios do not stand up on their own. They only rest on the cradle. This is a problem because you have to keep plugging and unplugging the darn thing. The batteries will burn up from sitting on the charging cradle which remains on when plugged in. Well, I took care of that problem by installing a pair of on / off switches on the cradle. This lets the radios sit there without charging until you turn on the switch, thus eliminating a battery or radio burn out. Outside of this particular problem, I have no complaints. You will love these as long as you keep a realistic expectation.18-25 miles is outrageous. My 5 watt Ham Radio portables dont even get that kind of range. You get a choice of either yellow or black face plate. I prefer the black.

Not worth the money
By cutieVerified Reviewer from summerfield fl on 8/16/2008
Cons:
Drains Battery, LOW VOLUME, Poor Reception
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

These are the worst walkie talkies I have ever owned. They do not hold a charge, the volume is terrible, and the clip never stayed in it.

Great two-way radio. I am not sure why people have trouble with the speaker in the radio, but mine sound great. I have had mine for about a year now and have never had any problems. My only complaint, however, is the range. It does not get the 25 miles as advertised, but I did not expect it from the start. This is purely marketing from the few competing companies. But I trust Motorola and their products. Works great for hiking, as cell phones typically do not have reception where I hike. Again, not great range, but certainly enough to keep in contact with friends while venturing from the campsite. I highly recommend Motorola products, and you will not be disappointed by these radios- a must if you're an outdoors enthusiast or someone looking for an adventure!

Very nice, don't understand the comments of some who find the signal not clear . . . use QT on GMRS. Took 10 mins to get my FCC license. Only grouse would be the PTT button . . . my 8 year old misses the top part talk mode some of the time.

We tried using these for crane communication and they were horrible. The speakers sounded blown out when they were brand new, and the PTT buttons were defective on a few of them.

25 Miles ?! In flat southern California desert in the HIGH Power mode ! I can't even communicate beyond 1/2 mile. Very risky if you will be depending on this for hiking ,camping, fishing or hunting.

I purchased these in Nov. '07 for use in our office.. We use these radios when we go out into Soledad Canyon (Thousand Trails Park) Preserve.. They're great as long as we don't have a 'berm' between radios.. Even then, we can hear 'one way'.. but can't transmit between the hillsides.. Either way, it suits our needs, as the more expensive Motorola radios our "Rangers" use have the same problem. They're great for 'Camping' and we use them in inclimate weather, (rain)!

I work on a farm and have found that this radio can work along side the Motorola business band radios however and let this be well known radioshack claims this to be of a 25 mile range but if you do research on it at the motorola website you will find it specifically mentions a 1-4 mile range under ideal conditions but other than that this is an excellent radio that can be enjoyed year after year

Appauling sound quality
By mikepa from Plantation, FL on 11/3/2007
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

These radios have a nice set of features, but the sound quality is terrible. When were only 100' apart the conversation was unintelligible. The sound is very, very distorted. From what I've read on other review sites this is not a malfunction.
