Some things that are great about it are: 1) it is easy to use in high volume areas, it has great reception, zero antenna problems, and it is a very exciting product in stores at this time. It is also exciting to listen to when there is a lot of emergencies and 911 calls going out.

If one only needs to scan a particular set of frequencies, and is not interested in the full range this has already programmed into it, this scanner is a major pain, and the PC programming cable and software appear to no longer be available.

Got this little scanner about 8 months ago, the sales people tried to convince me it wouldn't be usuable much longer because my community is going digital. The guy in the store programmed it for me and helped me get the needed accessories. So far only a few agencies have become unreadable, am still able to pick up lots of law enforcement and emergency signals. Have since purchased a pro-97 second hand and I don't listen to it as much as to this one. Will be getting a digital when I can afford one but until then, this one works fine for me.

I was hoping to get some local emergency frequencies. Had I known that my area went digital and this scanner would not work I would never have bought it. I can't seem to get anything good on it so it was a waste of money. The digital is way more expensive.

I am extremly disapointed with the dificulty in programing this scanner, finding a source for railroad and marine frequencys is difficult at best.I returned to the point of purchace for asistance with this issue and the manager refused to let anyone from the sales staff to help me with this,"it would take too much time away from the sales floor" were her exact words. I had hoped to exchange this scanner for a better one, unfortunaly I lost my reciept and this was not possible. my experience with this store has caused me to loose all intrest scanning or ever setting foot in this store again.

I am a former 911 supervisor from Fla. and now live in Haywood County NC, we are right in the mountains and my Pro 82 has great signal strength and range. The audio is the best and I wished that they would remake this unit to keep up with the future. I also was a tech. for Cingular and a plain unit with out all the bells and whistles works better than the fancy units. I also have a PRO 95 and Pro97. Radioshack makes a good product
in their scanner line.

Great scanner for the price. Reception is very good with the stock antenna; I am able to get clear signals from police departments 30 miles away. Would imagine external antenna would make a great product better. If you live in a major metro area you may want to get a higher end model with 900MHz range as most large cities use those frequencies, but for most users this will do. Uses standard or rechargeable batteries and acts as a charger for both Ni-CD or NiMH AA batteries. It is slightly difficult to program at first but once you get the hang of it, its a breeze. My only complaint is that you cant directly enter a frequency using the keypad unless you program that freq. into the banks. For example if you are just curious to hear what is on channel 155.100, you cant just enter 155.100, you either have to use the up/down manual tuner or program the frequency into the memory bank. The other problem is that its so interesting to listen, that you may unknowingly spend large chunks of time listening to this thing! Overall its awesome and highly recommended for average users.

The book says it will go just about as far as you can see the horizon... but i get WAY further than that after i bought the new rubber ducky antenna. (dont get the telescopic.. its a piece of crud)

This scanner is great for an entry level user. I think your best bet would be to get the 20-006 or better antenna to increase the range and sensitivity. It will work better than the desktop PRO-200 Scanner with the stock antenna. You should also get a Ni-MH AA battery charger with 4 batteries. It will be cheaper than the recommended charger, adapter, and batteries. I purchased the 2 hour charger kit with 4 AA batteries. Trust me, you will wish you had taken my advice.

Im on the third radio like this. The first one just stopped working after about 3 months, they replaced it with a refurbished radio. The refurb melted after about 3 months while being plugged in to the dc adapter [...] for this specific radio. I took it back and it was sent away for repair and then after about a month of getting it back it now will not come on at all. I would suggest getting a Uniden or some other major brand. Anyhting but radioshack brand.

I would ONLY recomend this scanner to a beginner. The first antenna I had didn't last long at all (but that is cause I took it on and off a lot the BNC contector to the scanner). And every one u do not have to pay no [$] for a 800 MHz radio Ur local [...] should sell the scanners that include 800 meg for $100 or less. I found them onlne. The belt clip is really sturdy. If u buy a secend antenna I personally would buy a 800 MHz antenna cause it costs less that the basic antenna and because ur radio's reseption will increse by a lot. [...]

The reception isn't great but most of the time you can hear what is being said. If you plan to use this in your vehicle like I do, then I do not encourage you to buy this, look for another model.

The instructional booklet is somewhat ambiguous. I had to read the instructions several times. I am still learning how to operate the control mechanisms. The bottom line is, you get what you pay for. I have seen better, however it was a gift for Father's Day. I would have selected another brand, however it does get the job done. The reception is poor, and it is constructed of light weight plastic. They make children's toys more durable than this scanner. Just do not drop it, and all should be OK.

This scanner works just fine for me. I live in a small town and it picks up all the local agencies along with some State Trooper.

Works great in the sticks too. I take it Jeeping and it picks up BLM and National park just fine.

This is a GOOD scanner. Not a GREAT scanner, but a good scanner. Major problem - the computer USB interface meant to program it does not work with it. It needs a DB-9 Serial interface. What modern computer has those? Not my Dell XPS, nor my Dell Inspiron. Does anybody know of a cable supplier?

I have had base units before, but I'm really impressed with this portable unit. I don't have a need for trunking in my area, so it works great. The stock antenna worked better that I perceived it would.

This is a great scanner but the main thing I use it for is to listen to air traffic. It's a bit hit-or-miss but I found New York Center (134.600) comes in decently from my location in west-central New Jersey.

By Todd S from Allentown, PA on 3/27/2007

Worth the price. Easy to use. Scanner comes preprogrammed with different searches ranging from police/fire, airports, marine to ham radio frequencies for those unsure how to program. Programming is so easy all one has to do is search radio frequencies online then enter then into your scanner. I searched Lehigh County PA radio frequencies ?it?s the county I live in? and found tons of different frequencies. Entering them is easy just press program then enter what channel number say channel 1 then enter the frequency say 154.4500 then hit enter, that?s it, that channel is up and running .I programmed about 14 channels I want to hear and just hit scan and its GREAT. I would advise to buy radio shacks rechargeable batteries and battery charger for $19.99 and it charges them in two hours or just get a DC charger that plugs into the scanner when filled with rechargeable batteries. Overall great value, great signal very happy with it. One could spend the extra money to get a trunking system but often those channels are blocked and not used by many individuals. 10 out of 10. Only down fall which may be an upside also is that its very light weight so hopefully it can hold up to my rugged use.

Very easy to manually program. Plugging an FM tranmitter into the speaker jack allows you to use your car's speakers to listen to the scanner. Saved my friend from encountering a blocked intersection from a downed power pole during a wind storm. Great starter scanner.
