I REALLY, REALLY wanted this to work. I lost my job and we have another Voip. Wanted to be able to get rid of Voip we have and use this. Thank goodness we did not cancel the other service because this turned out to be a total disappointment. Could not rely on it at all. We were always having to do the upgrade. We have a very good computer, so that wasn't the problem. It got to the point our daughter wouldn't even call us because she didn't want to deal with it either. I wanted it to work so much we kept using it to the point it was to late to return it. Now out the[$]

We use this as a backup home telephone. It is connected to a wireless handset. CAUTION: make sure your wireless Internet router is set for channels 1, 2, 10, or 11 if you are using WIFI at home and/or using a cordless phone, as WiFi may interfere with cordless phones and vice-versa. (Using the HIgh or Low channels for the WIFI prevents the interference.)Most normal folks pay over $25 per month for basic phone service. This simple, easy to use device provides unlimited calling, callerID, Voice Mail, and directory assistance at no additional charge-- the only cost is [$] PER YEAR - YYEESS... thats less than 2 bucks per MONTH. It really is a "free" phone for your home.Software is safely stored in the device, and occasionally it updates over the internet. no problems here. GREAT TECH SUPPORT IF YOU NEED IT (I've only had to call once in three years).Take the device WITH YOU anywhere in the country and plug in to any broadband computer to talk to anyone. It is a great deal, and a great value.

My husband got this to use for his home based business. We only have cell phones and service in our rural area is not the best quality. We got this plugged it in and it was so easy to set up and get it working. Just answered a few questions and we were up and going. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a phone other than cell...can't beat the price for service either. Reception and transmission quality is excellent. Can't say enough about how great it is.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I would recommend magicjack, but the device itself was not durable. I brought in February of 09. Work up until around May, the magicjack just fell apart one day, just fell out of the USB port. Unreal. It was bought directly from magicjack, which they , replace for free but I had to pay upfront. As far as working otherwise I have no complaints. I am thinking about buying a second one from the other retailers that are offering it a a cheaper price. But everytime I go to buy it it's not on sale. But its being advertise everynight that it is. I wonder why is this. I have never been able to get it for the sale price what's up with that RADIO SHACK?

The plugin lets you place magicJack and Skype calls from the same phone. To place Skype calls just dial * before the number you want to call. Speed dial numbers are available for dialing other Skype users. Regular magicJack calls are placed as normal. For incoming calls, just answer the phone when it rings.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Makes the computer it is hooked up to slower. Sometimes needs to be restarted because you will hear a dial tone but it won't let you dial. It is great to have unlimited phone service without a bill but if you use this phone as your primary/sole line you can not depend on it to work all the time. Great that is has hold music when you answer the other line so the person on hold doesn't get bored.

It is great except that I live in Pueblo County, Colorado and there are no phone numbers available that are not long distance for most of my clients. I purchased a MagicJack at a local Radio shack during Feb. 2009. I was then using Mac OS 10.5.6.

When I upgraded to 10.5.8 and then to 10.6, MJ stopped working.

I spent $40+ for the MJ and saved perhaps $5 in long distance calls. a bad bargain.

Step 1. Set MagicJack up at home, get a home area code number.
Step 2. Leave the country.
Step 3. Hook MagicJack up to an internet-ready computer.
Step 4. Connect phone.
Step 5. Make and receive calls as if your phone were at home.

This is essential for long-term travel. I'm working under a year-long contract in South Korea and I call my parents back home two or three times a week without worrying about long distance charges.

Very poor voice quality. I have not used this in months; did not get my money's worth. All have said my voice was split up, choppy or otherwise dropped in and out. Doesn't matter if it's local or long distance. My equipment is top of the line and have a standard cable 10 mbps Internet connection. I think people are over enthusiatic about the cheap price and ease of use. It had issues with installs and upgrades but chat support resolved; their language skills not consistent.

And I'm not sure the long term affect of leaving my brand new PC on 24/7 could cut the life expectancy Of my PC down , all good questions I should have checked out before I purchased the Magic Jack............?????

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I purchased my MJ in April or May of 2008 at RS in Delray Beach, Fl. with the idea that I would install it and register in NY, my summer home. It was not until yesterday 3 Sept 2009 that I tried to install it. I could not achieve registration. I finally reached customer service rep by type in chat. He went thru the procedure exactly as I had done and found that my MJ had been previously registered by another person in another area of Fl. He went on to state that they only warrantee the MJ sold directly by them and I would have to deal with the RS in Fl. I dont know if I still have the reciept, and will not know until I return there in November. I dont understand this entire situation. The MJ was in a sealed celuloid package and not opened by me until yesterday. Have I dumped [$] down a rat hole. I definetly smell a rat

I have found no problems with this product as far as quality of calls, not receiving calls, or being able to make calls. I have it hooked up to my desk top that is running a Q9450 quad core processor that is over clocked and running 3.4Ghz. Also, I am using it with cable internet and a high quality Panasonic phone.
I was disappointed when I was not able to get a local phone number. It is long distance for locals to call me on a land line.

Not recommended with satellite or phone tower internet, You should have hard wire internet coming to your house (DSL, Cable)also wifi routers may be a culprit

You should have a decent amount of free download and upload per second available to talk.

Drivers can often drop out unexpectedly, just update, don't try to search for them/always have a copy of the update program on your desktop, in case the program just wont open

some third party firewalls don't get along with it, though recently ZoneAlarm was made compatible

If your reception is choppy, it is probably one of the first two

it is often recommended to restart the program by clicking menu> advanced users> restart.

Surely one of these suggestions will save you hours in an instant chat with a magicjack rep. All of these taken together, yes MJ is unstable, it can also save you a bundle if you are willing to work with it. The above answers could put to rest 70% of these comments claiming "scam"

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Having read a great deal of reviews on the product, I felt that a dedicated system was needed. I built a system that is dedicated to Magicjack, in addition I made changes to the registry in order to enhance Windows 7 performance. Thus far, I have had one problem, the phone number that I used area code 347 would not allow incoming calls. Magicjack allows one free phone number change, since then the system is operating.

This is great VOIP phone if you want to save money. Unbeatable price! The sound is crystal clear if you have better high speed internet connection even though you use web browser at the same time. The only shirtcoming is that the computer has to be on when you make or receie the phone call. But I can live with it because of th price.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

For making calls, I have encountered only minor problems such as occasional interference. My local phone company is Frontier, who has not reached agreement with Magic Jack to send calls to MJ. This means that local Frontier callers cannot reach my MJ number. Frontier advises that they do not have an agreement anywhere in their service areas. MJ ads indicate that you can eliminate your landline and totally rely on MJ. That is misleading. Also, the only support is via chat-- no phone support.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Had so many problems with AT&T (the landline phone MONOPOLY), dealing with AT&T GREED and overcharges. So decided to try Magic Jack since I no longer had a phone...no Cell, no landline.

Spent Hours with tech support (5 hrs in one day) & the proble was still not resolved, not sure where these people live since English seems like an Alien language to them. & they never keep their promises. Finally after many hours and trying things on my own, the thing works Most of the time. Sometimes it just doesn't do anything, so you have to dial again (A lot).

So yes, they make too many promises on a product that needs a LOT more R&D and work still. But really what do you expect from an American company except lies and Junk.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

My husband purchased the product to save money. We had it for several months and used it for about a month and are annoyed.
Here are the issues:
Magic Jack is plugged in, even though I can call out I am not receiving calls.
After idle mode, it takes 30 seconds for the Magic Jack to load in order to make a phone call.
Your computer freezes while it is loading.
Reception is not clear.
Now we just use our cell phones.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I use Roadrunner turbo and have a new 2.8 gig duel core processor computer so the problem is not my service or equipment. The first one I got gave me the last 3 digits "666" To change the number I would have to use the ONE FREE number change. I took it back to Radio Shack and exchanged it. The new one the 911 does not work, the volume on my end is low and fuzzy. The delay is so long, people keep saying "Hello, can you hear me?". You can NOT add years without a credit card in your name. No directions for anything. Live chat support is a joke, and they lie about getting back to you. This is the first communication company I have ever seen without a phone number. BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I thought this product was great when I initially purchased it in June of last year. It worked alright until one day, suddenly the blue light wouldn't come on. I chatted with several techs and got the same runaround with all of them. Not to mention it was obvious that english was not first language for any of them. All I wanted was a replacement. One rep would pass me to another- always someone who was supposedly "management". Yah, right! Finally, after a weekend of fooling with these jokers I had the displeasure of chatting with the ultimate jerk. He thought it would be cute to leave my questions and remarks hanging in the chat window. I mean literally 30-45 minutes would pass by before he would type out another lie. Believe me I was not sitting in front of the computer the entire time. I can play this game too. During one of my long waits, I decided to file a complaint with the BBB. I had still not received a response from him so I let him know that while I had been waiting, I was able to file a complaint. Within 2 seconds he then asks, "Shall I issue that replacement now?" I promptly received my replacement at no cost to me. But during the course of the year I have found that this gadgets claims are too good to be true. Audio quality can be very poor and there are constant beeping sounds and the person on the other end has to deal with your voice dropping in and out as well as dialing sounds. For the price of [$] a year, it's alright but you MUST have a back up phone service. Do not rely on this to be your only phone line. August 10th my service ended. I went to renew my service before then and low and behold- I wasn't able to renew through my account. I chatted with a rep and of course she knew nothing. She finally put me on "hold" for a few minutes only to return to tell me that my account was under review. For what?! There's no monthly billing! She told me that she had sent message to someone who is better equipped to help me and to wait for an e-mail. It's now Aug. 16th, still nothing. Somehow, I'm not surprised. I will not persue it. I'm researching other VOIP services. Phone Power looks good to me.

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Unfortunately, this device is not as good as I would have expected. The real problem is that it requires you to have a relatively stable and available computer to work at all, and that can be a challenge to us all. Additionally, there are a lot of unexplained and unneeded DTMF tones ( Touch Pad Tones) that are randomly generated, and disturb the calls. Callers to you have to face the "circuits are busy now" message quite a lot as it seems there is not enough capacity in the system for all the customers that want to use the service.

Generally, the only bright spot that I can think of is if you are going to travel to Europe and need to call back to the USA without a charge. You have to find a computer to use that is on the Internet however to make this work.

I have purchased two of these devices and had some success but unfortunately I feel that as many "American" products are these days, the company promises much more than it can produce. And the technical support - while they try ( bless their souls) are not able to even to understand the beginnings of your problems. They promise someone from their engineering staff will contact you but up until today not a single attempt has been seen by me in their attempt to contact me.

A good first toy if you are interested in VOIP but certainly not a good product to keep your professional reputation with.

In Short , it is an embarrassment of a product.

Now I'm starting another side business, and its only going to cost me $40. for a new # and separate voice mail. The office has a windows box and I have MACs at home, and magicjack works perfectly. No jitter, no dropouts. Nothing.

Not Good Everywhere
By MikeVerified Reviewer from Cookeville, TN on 7/11/2009
Pros:
Clear Reception
Cons:
Not Good in Frontier Area
Describe Yourself:
Tech Savvy
Primary use:
Personal
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Beware - if your area is served by Frontier for landline service, you will not receive calls from Frontier customers. I have chatted many times with Magic Jack and all I get from them is "we will let you know". I contacted Frontier and was told that all Frontier service areas have the same situation. There must a signed agreement between the two and so far, there is none. The advertising that Magic Jack uses is false when they indicate "anyone in the world can call you".

Best Uses:
Long Talks, Normal calling from home
Describe Yourself:
Tech Savvy
Primary use:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

This is a great product. Couldn't be much easier to use and the value is unbelievable! it does cut out a little, sounds much like a cell phone would, especially when using the PC while on the phone, but not enough to be unbearable. My biggest complaint is that I can't get a local prefix where I'm at yet, so it's long distance for local people to call me. The price for living in a small town, so I can deal with it, and frankly it's only a problem for those that have traditional land lines. Overall it's a great value and works great for us! No more worries about long distance calls or using too many cell minutes!

Bottom Line:

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Rather simple to setup, but issues remain on call stability and system overloading, both your computer speed and the ability to receive or even make calls go thru if their network is overloaded.

People get "all systems busy now" recording even before your voice mail

Reasonable international calls and price, and easier to use than Skype. However the quality and stability is not as good as Skype in my opinion.

Works great. Almost always as good as a land line - always better than cell quality.

Problems I encountered turned out to be related to my ISP - not magicJack. Once I got a competent person at the ISP, he confirmed they had a problem with VoIP and then fixed it.

magicJack Tech support is sometimes on the mark - sometimes off. For tough issues, better help is available in user forums, like at www.magicjacksupport.com

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

This is great! I paid slightly more than I normally would pay for a month of phone service and got an entire year! To renew is even LESS than I normally pay per month, and I get a full YEAR!! The money aspect is really exciting, I'll be saving a LOT.I rarely have this problem, and this is the only problem I have, is that it will seem to stop working (never during a call, but someone will try to call and go straight to voicemail. Unplugging and replugging the USB device fixes this). I'm pretty sure this isn't designed to be left plugged-in on a computer 24/7 as a primary phone, it seems they're advertising it as a "plug it into your personal computer, and use it when your computer's on" rather than a primary-line replacement. However I've set up a spare (very old) laptop next to our phone system, and leave that running unattended all the time. It works great other than having to remember to unplug and replug the device every once-in-a-while to make sure it keeps running. There's an unofficial support forum that details using a VoIP box to connect to the MagicJack service instead of the USB device, I'll be trying that out asap. The MagicJack phone service itself seems to work just fine, clear signals, never dropped calls that I've heard of.Final note: I haven't had to contact support yet, so I can't vouch for them there. Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

This is VoIP. The quality of service will depend on quality & speed of broadband connection as well as PC's processor speed, condition and other services running.

I am using 3.0 Mbps DSL, Dell Dimension 9100, XP, 2 gig ram, and virus & spyware free. MJ operates as well as can be expected for any VoIP. Though the quality is not as good as hard wired land line, it is as good as any cell phone service. And it does provide a useable connection. Compared to clients who have or have had various VoIP service, MJ is as goo as VoIP gets.

I use MJ as a second line, maintaining traditional hard wired phone service.

I frequently travel to an area which is long distance to my home and is also where most of my family resides. My MJ has number from that location and is forwarded to my home number. My family and I call my MJ number to reach my primary home number without long distance charges. It works great. Voice transmissions in these cases are handled just as a regular call.

If you want perfection, stick with PSTN. If you'd like a second line with a break on long distance charges, check out MJ. If you have trouble with MJ, consider checking out other issues involved.

When I first bought my magicjack, because of the reviews I read online, I thought I would have to upgrade my DSL to cable. I've kept my DSL and use my magic jack and have had no problems at all. Honestly, I am amazed it works fine with my dsl.

I just spoke with my grandfather (who is 86) for one hour and he was concerned about my phone bill. I had to laugh, but was also glad to know that even he couldn't tell the difference.

Like the other reviews said, I wish they had this when I went to college and it would make a great gift.

I love my magic jack and recommend it to everyone.

Absolutely no problems at all! This is the best [$] I've ever spent. I had Phonepower VOIP, and their unlimited calling really means 3000 minutes, not unlimited. I have teenagers! I get the same results with Magic Jack. I love it! I sent one to my friends in Africa, where phone rates are very high - now they can call me in the US for free. Land line companies are finally getting what they deserve for ripping consumers off for years.

Bottom Line:

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I would suggest you first go look at the website for Magicjack and decide if the tech support is worth the $40 plus it will cost you the first year and the non-refundable price after the first 60 days if you don't like it.

If it stops working after the intial 60 days because of the device malfuctioning, you will not be sent another and if you don't transfer the balance to another MJ, you will lose that balance.

Tech support is limited to a chat line on a computer and is embeded to make it difficult for the user to find it and they are not tech savy.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Read the user agreement very carefully before committing. If you prefer privacy, you may want to pass on it.

If you can't resisit the offer, I suggest setting it up on a computer dedicated to Magic Jack. There is a possibility that it will interfere with other applications. Check out the Magic Jack site to see the list.

Quality and Reliability have been good for the first few months. Except when my modem went out and I waited for a week to receive a replacement - glad I kept AT&T so I could still make phone calls.

Customer and Tech Service is very poor. They seem to have only a basic understanding of their product.

My wife installed the software on my computer without my knowledge. There is no simple way to unistall it. I had to go into the registry to manually remove it.

I am disappointed in Radio Shack for offering this product.

Since we've installed ours, now going on two months, we've never had a call drop and no one has told us we have bad reception therefore I think a lot of the negative reviews must be from people who work for the phone company.

Primary use:

Bottom Line:

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Bought this to save money on a new office phone line. Works great except when it doesn't: 1) most calls over 20 minutes are suddenly dropped, 2) sometimes right after number is dialed, instead of connecting goes back to a dial tone, 3) any time during conversation other person can't hear you, you'll hear "hello ? hello ?" over and over again.

Basically this device is for all calls where you don't mind total unpredictability. This problem was rare during the 30-day trial period, now its almost daily. I use my cell for important calls, MJ for all others. Cheap way to cut down on use of peak cell minutes, if and when my business takes off I'll get a real voip service or Ooma.

Oh, and I did all the MJ trouble shooting and download updates, no difference.

What I don't like is that I must always be on Internet to be able to talk on this product. That's only one draw back. I still can't complain cause it is an Internet Phone.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Well, I wrote a review a few days ago, when all seemed fine with the MJ. But I am finding that it just isn't reliable enough to replace our standard land line. I have found that Voicemail doesn't always work. That, for me, is a deal-breaker, since we do not always want the PC on. Additionally, the audio tends to "break up" on our system. During an hour long call, it did this at least a half dozen times. Usually it wasn't bad enough that you coudn't make out what was said, but sometimes you did have to repeat yourself. In this regard, it was about like an average cell phone. This might have something to do with our 8yr old P4 laptop. Maybe VOIP needs dual-core processing? But I wouldn't think voice would need THAT much horsepower. So, I'm changing my original opinion, and I would not recommend this product as a main line. Maybe as a cheap second line for your teenager.......but they all seem to have cell phones, and only TEXT on them anyway. NO TEXTING WHILE DRIVING!!!!!

I highly recomend this to anyone looking @ buying this product. I am looking @ lowering my minutes on my cell phone & getting the MagicJack for myself. Looking forward to post another comment here when I get back to North Carolina & get my own.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Just installed MJ. I have Windows XP. Installation was extremely easy. I use cable broadband. Tried it with a wireless Plantronics with headset and Creative HS-900 wired headset. I'm currently using it with the Creative HS-900 without a phone plugged in and use the 'soft' phone part of the software. It's great! Both have methods have great volume and sound quality. Those I called said that they could not tell its VOIP and better than most cell phones.I do wish that we had the option to turn on Name Caller ID for outbound. If we could customize that would be great. I'm using MJ for those days that I'm working from home and I need my clients to see that it's "me" calling and preferably see my company name on their caller ID. Also, I've not mastered how to get my personal greeting to work with voicemail or how to select which voicemail message option to use. For example, with MJ on or off or computer on or off the voicemail message simply says "The person at extension ***-***-**** is not available. It does not give my personal greeting or my name all of which has been recorded. Not sure what is going on with that. I may try the online chat/CS at MJ to see what they have to say. Other than that I would recommend the MJ.[...]

It DOES work, how well might be debated

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

We bought this with the idea to replace our land line. We've only been using for a week and are still evaluating. But let's start from the beginning..

The initial install went well, no problems. I was able to make calls within 10min. (I am using a 7yr old P4 laptop, on a 768K wireless broadband) The odd thing was that it took somewhere between a few hours or overnight for my out-going voicemail message to "take". Voicemail also didn't work when the PC was off, but after a day, it was working fine. Chalked it up to start-up issues, but, no biggie.

Seems to work as advertised, except for one thing: The audio sounds just like a land line, but it tends to "break up", sometimes to the point where you cannot understand what was said. In a one hour call to a local friend, it did this about every ten minutes or so. When it did this, most of the time you could make out what was said, but sometimes it would garble so badly, you'd have to repeat yourself, or ask the other person to repeat what was said. This one problem MAY be a deal-breaker, but maybe not, we will see.

I am wondering if anyone out there has used one of the other VOIP services, and if they tend to break up less than MJ.

The magic jack is a great product. I give them out as gifts to all of my family. My brother is in Kosovo in the Army and it works great for him. It eliminates calling cards or any charges by using some other form to call home. He is able to call whenever he wants and we can call him when we want. The best part is that he has voicemail so he knows when we called.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

We have been a cell phone only family for a while but were looking for something to act as somewhat of a home phone that could supplement our cell phone minutes for long calls to family. Magic jack has great call quality (on 1.3 megabit internet). It jumps a bit if you are using the internet while you talk. The magic jack window has to stay up but can be minimized, but it comes up on the screen whenever you make or receive a call. It slows down your computer's boot up. It might slow down your computer's overall performance--I haven't made up my mind. But for the service and the price, its not intolerable. Also I have not gotten the voicemail to work smoothly,But honestly, have not spent a whole lot of time figuring it out. Overall, I like the product--and you can't beat the price.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

This might not be for a family or an environment that requires a rock solid land line, but it's performed great for my needs, primarily as a supplement to my cell (I was using too many minutes while at home.) The quality is more than adequate and I already had a PC that's on 24/7. There's no other VoIP provider that gives you a local number that can come close to the price. Sure you can likely get slightly better call quality, more features, or better customer service elsewhere, but for the price this is the best value around. For what it's worth, I have worked as a VoIP Engineer and have extensive experience in the field. I've used Cisco Call Managers, Asterisk boxes, and used other internet based SIP service providers, but all those solutions require a significant amount time to configure, additional hardware (and electricity,) and cost more as well. With this you plug in the dongle, plug in the phone, install the software and you're done. The one caveat is their website is AWFUL. They are much more interested in selling the product than providing support to their clients and their website clearly shows this....I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out what the default VM password is (1234.)

Very userful for some one that is always on the move. People cannot reach you when your computer is turned off. You need to be connected to the internet with this jack hooked up to your computer. I use to call my folks in India and they call me 'local' as and when needed. I talk for an average of 50 minutes to an hour daily. For this much amount of time, magicjack gets a little warmed up but I guess that is ok. Saves a LOT on telephone bills. Very worth for the price. The regular price is [$] You make the math. You can also port your number. How about that? Now, the unchartered terrirtory is the customer service. Heard bad things about it although I have not personally experience so far. I guess it would not be that bad. Worst case, they might provide email only support. But then that is a gamble.

Cons:--Sometimes goes silent when you are calling a busy number.--Requires the dongle to make any calls even if you have speakers and microphone attached to your computer.--The dongle gets warm and should probably be vented but is difficult to disassemble so that I can add my own vents.--Not sure how you keep your same number if the dongle dies and you need to order a replacement? This should be in the FAQ but I couldn't find it.

Nice try at internet based phone calls. Generally works great, occasionally has glitches. If you have high speed internet the call quality seems as good as land line. Can't beat the price! I ended up buying several more- Kids at college and relatives over seas.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

This is great! The day we got it we hooked it up to the computer, and just like that, we had an active phone line. It works really well. You can call anywhere, and recieve calls all day long so long as your internet is hooked up. This is great because we live in WV and my stepdaughters mom lives in Alaska, so now they can talk unlimited without having to worry about conserving minutes or using up expensive long-distance calls! I have talked for hours personally on the phone, and for a mere twenty dollars a year, you can't beat it. It's good quality for a great price. I highly recommend!

Have it connected to an old laptop (Pentium III) being used as a print server. Call quality is good. Problem getting my HP AllinOne fax to work with it though, will not dial through MJ at all. The MJ application is very intrusive and annoying, in my case since the laptop is un-attended, its acceptable, otherwise I would definitely look for someway to block it. [$]

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Worked on my acer 8.9" with no problems, but wouldn't work on three others without an external usb ac powered adapter (and even then it took an hour to set up). I loved it my first day on the netbook, but planned to use it with my other desktops at home, but still have not been satisfied with the setup. Sometimes computer sees it, sometimes not. Then it freezes the computer and I have to reboot. Magicjack forum full of similar stories. Online tech support is nonexistent and their stock answers do nothing to help. haven't tried online chat yet, but will this weekend.
Recommended only for those who are okay with something not always being plug and play. You might need additional drivers and update downloads before you can start, so prepare for that possibility. Once running, the thing sounded better than our ATT land line (which we bought this to replace).
I got a local number in NY where my family lives, so they can call me in Mississippi without long distance charges. Everyone here in Miss. calls my cell or office number, so if magicjack rings, it is my family.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I have a cell but I don't like using all of my minutes. With the Magic Jack, I can talk on the phone as long as I wish, at any time. I've never gotten disconnected. Only a few times did I hear a bit of short lived interference. This is really easy to use, saves my cell phone minutes, and people can call me on it too. (You get assigned a phone number when you first connect it) I've read some reviews where the person said, "They don't tell you your computer has to be on for it to work!" Well, "DUH!" It's a computer peripheral. Can you use your printer with the PC turned off? Common sense!! Also, don't buy this if your using dial-up. This is a high speed internet connection dependent device. That was another complaint I read. I'm happy with the Magic Jack. I bought two. One as a gift.

Set up was as easy as advertised. The toughest decision was whether to buy or not after wading thru all the bad reviews. I weighed them as mostly software conflicts or user issues & decided to go ahead. It IS easy to set this up if you follow their instructions & that is a challenge at times. Their website is not the easiest to navigate to find info, but you need to just settle in & read a lot. I went to [...] & bought an AT&T Trimline classic corded phone for $12 & hooked it up to MagicJack & it sounds perfect.. I stayed away from a wireless phone & just bought a very long wire cuz I don't use my landline much. The intention here is that I am awaiting the day I can transfer my home # to MagicJack & happily say goodbye to my landline phone company. If you can plug in a flashdrive to your computer, you can set this thing up "if" you read the instructions first by weeding thru their website.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

The device is fabulous. However, I think it depends on your computer, as well as your internet connection. Both of mine are great! You can't tell the difference between the Magic Jack and a regular land line.

They don't have enough availibilty in regard to area codes; therefore, I had to take an 'outside' area code. So, that can be a negative for those living in my area, because it's long distance for them. However, as soon as one is available, I will change it. But that also means, the phone number will change too.

I wish that the number could be blocked from caller ID.

Several times a day, when someone tries to call, they get a message saying that all circuits are busy. However, I have no problem making calls my self.

All in all, it's great, as sound is the main issue, and it is fabulous! I can't complain for the money.

I bought this after one of my co-worker's recommened it. We have 2 cell phones and are tired of paying for a land line that we hardly use.Now that we swiched to Cable internet, we're going to disconnect the land line and use "Jack" for our home, so the kids will have a way to call 911 or us if needed. You have to put in your physical address for 911 and it tells you if it is availble. Great for a home computer.(I don't have a laptop or WiFi so I can't comment on that.) Yes, the calls are clear.About the same as our land line. Our ATT 5.8 digital phone sounds better than our Uniden 2.4 phone does. It also works better on the XP computer than the Vista computer. We downloaded the Vista patch, but some of the Roxio, Nero and CD burnerXPPRO do not like Magic Jack. But XP seems to handle it better. Also, if you check e-mail through IE, it doesn't play the WAV. file. I had it kick me out of IE a couple of times. Firefox is fine. It is only a [$] I haven't had to use their customer service techs yet, but it's only been a month. And I have a 203 area code. My local is 860, but I'll keep monitoring the site and see if in the future they add my area code. For now I have my family and friends call my cell, and then I'll call them back on "Jack".It will be nice not to have solicitors call me anymore!!!!

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I live in the DC Metro area and bought Magic Jack about 3 weeks ago after my sister in Texas recommended it. She had hers for 2 months then. I was leary when I saw it had minimal written instructions. But that was all I needed. Plug it in.. allow it to download and follow the screen prompts.

I use my cell phone a lot but have spotty quality inside my home. I have a landline and WAS using a pre-paid long distance calling card. Now I talk all I want even locally and without watching minutes, via MagicJack. I have recommened this to several friends, one of whom also bought it.

My desktop is connected via the Ethernet connection to cable Internet. But I move the magic jack to my laptop and use it with my wireless card from the Bedroom, or wherever. On a recent trip, I also used it from my hotel, that also had spotty cell phone reception, but crystal clear calls to family with no additional charge using the free high speed conection and magic jack.

My only complaint is trivial: I could not get my PC fax machine software, to work with it. The website FAQ said it did not recommend this for fax purposes.

I still need to try with my standard fax machine, just for an alternative.

I downgraded my landline to the most basic service possible in the event of emergency. I have experienced East Coast storms where we lost electric, and even cell towers. But the landline phone infrastructure worked so I could call the power company.

I installed this on a 4 yr old XP computer and was dialing within 15 minutes. We have DSL that has an upload speed of about 275k, and everything seems fine. We use this for outbound calls only, so the odd phone # I was assigned is not much of an issue. People I call can't believe this works this well for the price.

I visited the site to see how to purchase a yearly subscription after my initial year and the only offer is a 5 year contract for [$]. This is still a very good deal, unless you only want to pay for it by the year. I do not like the echo that I hear quite frequently when I use it. There is also some breaking up but that could be due to the DSL. It's truly awesome because it is portable, you can connect it to your laptop.

Bottom Line:

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Some folks have posted that Magic Jack is a Scam.I disagree completely with that statement. After researching VOIP options for nearly three days, ooma [$] & Magic Jack were the last two standing. I decided that Magic Jack was worth a shot, I bought my Magic Jack yesterday [...] With the intent to return if the quality was less than par.To my relief the unit installed in minutes and sound quality is AWESOME!!I think the reason why some folks are having problems, is that Magic Jack needs to be installed on a computer with sufficient bandwidth. (124kbps min) The computer also needs to be fairly clean and clear of viruses and spyware. (These things, rob your computer of resources) Also please remember, this devise interfaces with your computer and is subject to conflicts with other items (hardware/software) that are already present in your computer. And because we all have differet things instaled on our computers, no two computers are alike. This is the same as with any new software/hardware you introduce to any computer. Don't think so?? Just ask your kids if they ever had to install a patch/driver update to play a new game. Sure the customer services could be a lot more attentive with an actual toll free number. But setting these up things cost a lot of money, money that will have to be paid by you, the consumer [$] In closing, if you can't remember when was the last time you ran any maintenance on your computer or your computer is running very slow that you've considered going to Finally Fast.com. This Product is not for you, in fact, I would advise you to stay with your regular landline. I think a basic understanding of computers is necessary whenever you begin to add anything that didn't come pre-installed.Thank you,

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I have not had a phone bill since I bought this device in July. I am soooo happy with it. There are times when the computer is not on...no problem. Any missed calls automaticly sends the caller to voice mail. Voice mail is sent to my email in .wav format. I can then choose to listen from my email using an audio program able to play .wav or I can call my voice mail to listen to the message. I like the email option since it comes with a time stamp and it is quick access. Sound quality depends on what other devices you have connected to the computer internally. I have a TV, WiFi, and Video card connected. No problems with this set up.

I received the Magic Jack as a Christmas present. When I first used it, it took some getting used to; but overall, it works well. Sometimes, it may sputter (reading over the internet), but I love the fact that I don't have pay those outrageous phone bills.

Recently, my home phone was disconnected and I no longer have the conventional internet service. I didn't go without the Magic Jack. I purchased a wireless service adapter, and it still works just as well as the Hi-speed internet. And, I can use my multi-portable phones with it. Way to go!

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Overall I'm VERY impressed with this product. Saw the ads, read the reviews, even talked to a friend in Florida that could not get a MagicJack to work right. Decided to buy it and try it out.

The installation was a bit difficult - installer terminated after driver install and actually crashed XP. Restarted machine, figured out how to get install to resume and, after a wait that seemed forever the installer completed and sign-up screen appeared. From then on things went smoothly. Made my first call to that friend in Florida and she was amazed at how good the sound quality was.

I'm using the MagicJack on an 11 year old PII-366 Compaq laptop (this machine sits over in the corner as my print server, NAS hub and other "grunt" work). I had my doubts that this old machine would work with the MagicJack but it runs VERY well with very low CPU utilization. Note that the installation issue I mentioned above may be due to the slow CPU in the computer (timing loop timeout?).

My only real beef is that the documentation for the MagicJack is REAL thin - no recommended machine specs (other than machine must run XP or Vista) nor anything else of detail in even the FAQ on MagicJack's web site.

All in all, if you have a solid broadband internet connection and need a phone, try out the MagicJack. I hope the phone companies, ESPECIALLY AT&T, are having constant heartburn attacks over the popularity of the Magicjack!!

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Reluctant to buy initially, as I discovered it via an Infomercial - and have never in my life purchased anything via TV. Also couldn't figure out how they could afford to do it. Bottom line - They work great, never down and no problems. How they afford it? Who cares?!? It does what they said, toll calls aren't toll - period. Only negative I see is it adds about 5 minutes to the boot-up time of computer, but since we're now adding to our inside phone lines - so all house phone jacks run off the MajikJack, computer will have to stay on always. Probably just being paranoid, but we're going to keep one 'no-frills' 'real' phone line through the local phone co. Even @ $30/month for the wired phone, overall we're still saving over 1K/year. Just can't trust that our internet provider is always going to be on - No ISP = no phone (Hasn't happened yet). But - we love it, we're buying another set for work, and hopefully I'll have the confidence to totally 'cut the cord' real soon. BTW - yes, the phone interchange is 40 miles away (Grennwich) But again, who cares! All it means is we moved into the richest town in the country, without payimng the taxes or mortgage!

After 3 to 5 minutes of talking, it cuts you off and you have to restart your computer to use it again. If you see the commercials it states "unlimited local and long distance," but when you hook it up to your computer you have to agree with the terms of service, one of which is the monthly limit on time, if you go over that, they charge you one cent a minute! Remember the old saying about "if it sounds to good to be true!"

Don't be afraid of the reviews that are negative. 99.9% of all issues are with the peeps computers. I have installed mine on both my home PC's and 2 different work PC's. No issues at all.
I have Road Runner LITE and it works perfectly. Plug it in to a USB port, be patient and let it install itself and start making calls...........that easy!
For the price, i can not believe anyone would choose not to get one. BTW: instead of having it on my main computer which would have to be left on 24/7, i got a very small GX260 Dell that came with XP pro installed and keyboard and mouse, all for $54.00. I use this 100% for the Magic Jack. It stays on 24/7 and uses the power of a 40W lightbulb :)

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I have seen many of these VOIP devices and services over the years. This is by far the best I have ever come across. I use it in my office and can, affordably, have many lines. In these economic times, have to save where we can. Inatallation only took minutes and I can see any of my "challenged" clients being able to install one easily as well. I having been "test phase" for a week and absolutely no problems. Just remember to disconnect if the computer it is conected to is going to be restarted. Easily reconected right after. I haven't found any "cons" for it and I have been looking.

Do not waste your money. I spent 6 hours on chat with magicJack, being told to do the same things over and over. Do not believe the package. You do not just plug it into your computer, plug in your phone and have it work. It does not work. In fact IF you get a dial tone you will be lucky. Never able to make or receive call.

Picked this up at my local "Shack" about 4 hours ago. Hooked up the MJ to the usb port on my laptop and it had installed itself in a couple of minutes. Did the couple minutes of registration, received my phone number, called my cell phone, and WOW, clear as a bell!!! They didn't recommend using the unit on a USB hub, but I tried it on my Belkin powered hub, and it works just great. So it will stay connected there. Called a bunch of family members, local & distant, worked great, crystal clear. We have a phone system with 5 cordless to it. Works just as good as the ATT line that is going to be shut down now.Added, unadvertised Bonus!! Ya gotta love these!I have a GigaWare USB Headset/Mic (RadioShack SKU# 43.122) and guess what? Yup, it works with the magicJack, and gives hands free operation too! Now all I need do is send a MJ to my son that is station overseas and we will be all set.Only one small glitch. You do have to dial the area code for local calls. But for $1.70 a month I will reprogram the cordless phonebook with the area code and move on.Do I recommend this product? You bet.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I don't talk to too many people on the phone, but I need a phone for medical reasons. I have high speed internet (DSL) and that is my only luxury. No Cable No Cell No Satelite TV. It is great to have what I used to pay $ plus a month for $ a year. I have sent several that I programmed at my area code and sent them to family and friends that has High Speed Internet in other countries and they use it to call family in the USA and Canada.

It has not fired up a couple of times but it was the USB connection was losing contact. Replugged in and VIOLA. I have had it drop a couple of calls but was easily reconnected by hitting redial on my phone. The dropped calls was to a cell phone so go figure.

What I can't figure out is the negative comments. I know just enough about computers to be a little on the DUH side of life, but have been thrilled with mine for over a year now. I have bought more from Radio Shack and sent out as presents.

LOVE IT LOVE IT AND LOVE IT. Get the idea. for the money you can't go wrong.

I need to wholesale it for all the times I have recommended it

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I'm a telecommuter, therefore spend all my time at home, most of it on the phone. I decided to try this when the company quit paying for a work at home line. It works great, but the one time I had a problem, I almost sent it back. Let me preface this by saying I'm a tech support engineer myself, so I know how it should work. The "support" people are typing off of queue cards, they all say the same thing. I take it English is not their first language. If you get off the program, they send you to "higher level of support", where they have you try everything that has already been done before. If you get disconnected or have to reboot, you have to start over with new people and do everything again. I spent over 5 hours trying to get a replacement to work, downloading the firmware 7 different times because that is their first step. I'll throw it in the trash and go to a different solution if it ever has problems again.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I don't know about durability as I just bought this yesterday. It was easy to use and I had no problem with the first few calls. The problem is we have multiple desktops on our Windows XP system. When the desktops change you loose your connection and have to reinstall. I chatted with tech support and they are aware of the problem and tell me the only work around is to disconnect and reconnect the USB every time we change users. This is just not feasible for us as some users are children. Plus when you do that it takes a few minutes for the software to reload, at least on my system.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

I read some reviews that suggested this product was no good, but I decided to try it since the cost was reasonable. It installed easily. Worked right out of the box without even reading any instructions. Reception is clear. I have high speed cable internet and Windows XP and the product seems to work fine so far. The only problem I see is that there were no local area codes to choose from for my new number, so If my neighbor called me on that line, they would get a long distance charge. I also have to remember when I use the phone for a local call, I have to dial the area code and the phone number or the call won't go through. It's not a problem since I mainly bought it to use for long distance calls. I have read that maybe sometime in 2009, you may be able to transfer your own home phone number to the magic jack which would be a real plus and would eliminate the area code problem. You also have to remember to be online when you want to use the phone or it won't work. I would buy it again.

I hooked up my MagicJack in approximately 20 minutes' time. I dialed out to cell phones, landlines, any number I could think of. The sound quality was superb considering it was going through my computer and not an actual telephone line. I have basic DSL which does not use a telephone lines, so MagicJack serves as my house phone. There are a few problems that I noted in some of the negative reviews that I wanted to address:1) Software bugs. Some customers may have purchased beta models of the MagicJack which were not fully up to date yet. Software always gets improved, yet some people really don't want to believe it. There's a reason why people moved on from Windows '98.2) MagicJack requires 80kbs worth of bandwidth. I don't know how many customers I've had who don't understand why they can't use dial-up. You need DSL.3) MagicJack requires registry entries which some Security Suite programs will block. I use AVG and I know that was the case. If you are not computer savvy, then simply allow any and all changes to be made when installing MagicJack if you want it to work right (if you are computer savvy, then you probably stopped reading this review). Some people are lazy and do not have their security programs alert them to attempted changes--in their case, MagicJack is probably not the only faulty device/program on their system.[...]

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Like many people, I first thought that this was too good to be true but since the infomercial allowed me to give it a free trial, I went for it, and boy am I glad I did. This works so well and is such a great deal, I have a difficult time getting my friends to believe me.

I've had if for about 6 months and when I first got it I needed to talk with tech support because many times when I would make a call it would just go back to a dial tone and never connect. I was surprised when my chat session got an almost immediate response. I made every effort to be kind because I felt that they were probably going though some very difficult calls. I made up my mind to not be another difficult customer. The result was terrific. After spending about 15 or so minutes with the first tech support person, I got nowhere. I politely asked if I could be bumped up to the next level of tech support and I was. This level 2 person really knew his stuff. He had me go into the registry and make a few changes and deletions. Once that was done. The phone never worked better. He told me that if I had the problem again, to just repeat the process and all should work fine. He also mentioned that yes the software did have some bugs but that they were consistantly making improvements. And I believe this to be the case because at first I did have to re-edit the system registry a couple of times, but I haven't needed to in the last 4 months of so. Hey, for all that MagicJack has to offer me, I'm willing to be patient. I'm convinced that, given enough time, even these 1 star reviewers will be singing a different tune. This thing is just great and is only getting better as time goes on.

Recently I have been using it to call a friend of mine in Thailand and geez louise, you can't beat the price.

Finally, I must admit that when I first got my MagicJack, I didn't really have a high speed internet connection. I was getting a wifi signal on my laptop that was being reported in my wifi software as a "weak signal". But still my MagicJack would work, just not consistantly. Now I have a cable network connection and MagicJack and never worked better. Eventually I will buy a couple more of these things so that I can have multiple lines. For me there isno Skype, no Vonage, No landline, No nothing. Why when MagicJAck can provide me with all the phone service I'll ever need for almost free.

I just hope that MagicJack can survive this economic meltdown that were going though because without them, it's back to the landline telcos (heaven forbid).

Oh yea one last thing, I do not work for MagicJAck or Radio Shack, in fact I don't even have a job. I just love this thing and for someone who's on a limited income, nothing could be better.
Everyone who is interested in MagicJack should at least take them up on their free trial offer. Youv'e got nothing to loose and a free phone to gain. Hope my review was helpful. All the best.

This product has worked poorly or not at all since I started using it (in both XP and Vista and 7). Works equally as bad with or without a router.Their tech support just does not understand the basic concepts of VOIP. For example:1. I asked if it uses Qos. The tech said "Yes we have a TOS (Terms of Service). I asked to be transferred to higher support, and they said "yes it does use Qos". Nothing more.2. I asked them to confirm what ports it uses. Response: 80, 443, 5060-6500. I asked them why a SIP call would use anything besides the Standard 5060-5061, and especially HTTP ports 80 and 443. She retracted her claim about ports 80 and 443.3. I performed my own packet capture using both Microsoft's and Wireshark. It clearly showed that they were using ports between 40,000 and 65,535. From the IANA spec: DYNAMIC AND/OR PRIVATE PORTSThe Dynamic and/or Private Ports are those from 49152 through 655354. In the captures, the DSCP field in the header (showing Qos & Qos level) was set to ALL ZEROES on the sending/PC end. It received packets back from the network flagged as "Best Effort" (0010000). For best voice quality, both ends should specify 10111000. Intermediate paths will handle it as best as they can, But 00000000/00100000? No chance.5. On various OS's, it would just drop off the map. No dial tone. Dial tone, dial number, resulting in a dial tone. Dial tone, dial number, fast busy. Dial tone, dial number, fast busy AND a conversation on the other end.6. They should not even offer 911 as an option. With about a 50% chance of Magicjack even working at ant given point in time, it is irresponsible to even offer it as an option, since it would waste valuable time instead of getting help by other means. 7. I've been hung up on many times since the caller on the other end simply could not hear me.8. When tech support at Magicjack gets frustrated or vice versa, their "chat operator" will terminate the chat. Tech support follows a "script", and if you insist the exact same procedure failed the day before or that you want to ask a different question, they will transfer you to someone who will repeat the routine or the chat is terminated.9. They have refused to replace my original unit (just in case by some miracle it would help).10. Radio Shack, [...], and anyone else should cease acting as a reseller for such a blatantly faulty product. The FTC should seriously look at pulling it from the market.

I have already saved so much money caz of magicjack. You should definitely try this product. The only thing is that you need to make sure that ur internet connection is at least 128 kbps. I have heard ppl complaining about magicjack but good internet connection resolves almost all issues. Highly recommened for ppl who talk a lot on phone.

Comments about magicJack magicJack™ USB Phone Jack:

Spent hours with so-called tech people, as used 3 different phone sets, NO instructions of any type with the 3 units ordered by mail. Some features not operational yet, failed to ring connected phone. Worked only for outgoing calls with no connection issues, it was clear. You will be charged for all units ordered if used or not or given as gifts with a yearly fee for each, though not specified when purchased, even when saved as backups. Requires WinXP with DSL (high-speed) connection. Tech Support could phone me, I finally sent the 3 units back by registered mail before the trial period expired. The units need further improvements with detailed failure issues addressed by trained Tech Support, not a company receptionist. You need a Item Request Number (IRN or such) issued by MagicJack so the package is accepted on its return. [...]

After seting up three times I am unable to hear anything from the person I call when they answer the phone, and they do not hear me. The web site is of no help. In the box was the unit and 3 easy steps, followed onscreen instructions after that. Now what to do?
