I bought this at the first Radio Shack I found for a US Stateside road trip my wife and I recently took. It was a great help listening to traffic reports on the CB, and weather reports (very useful while in Florida) on the Weather Radio.

Although I make my living with Technology, my Wife does not, and she was able to use it with ease, as was my Mother (another Techno-Can't). All controls were easy for her to understand and operate.

Unless you use an external antenna, your range will be limited, but it posed no problems for the few miles in any direction we actually needed it for.

We found it extremely useful, and have no problems recommending it to those with basic requirements.

This is a great radio if you buy the right antenna. I could not pick up people 3 feet away from me with the stock antenna. I bought the radio shack Magnet mount antenna and can talk for about 2-5 miles now.

Just an awesome portable CB. I use in Colorado/Sonora Desert and get up to 5 miles with the included 8" antenna and easily get 20-25 miles using my 6' whip antenna w/BNC connector, and that's surrounded by mountains-my cell phone can't even connect out there so this CB is a life saver!

I use my TRC-241 as a loaner to members in my 4-Wheel Drive Club. For short distances (less than 100 yards, inside a vehicle) it's a good radio. Can't expect a whole lot from an 8 inch antenna.

Of the available handheld CB radios available (which are darn few) this is the best that I have found. 30 years ago, we had dozens to choose from. Not now. These work better in mountainous regions than the GMRS radios of any wattage. With an optional telescopic antenna, I can get 6-7 miles in the Adirondacks. Which is all mountains! Buy GMRS for close-contact use (keeping track of the kids, etc.) This CB is the choice for serious distance from a handheld.

By Mark N from Overland Park, Kansas on 3/27/2007

Overall, this is a good radio...The range is great if you use the right antenna, but as with all mobile radios, terrain is the biggest factor in reception. With a Little Will whip antenna mounted on the trunk of my car, I'm able to get a good 2 to 5 mile range at maximum power. I use it for highway driving, to monitor where the police are hiding and where there's construction.

Pros:

I like it. The range isn't as great as some radios, but that can be fixed with an additional antenna. I used this when I was moving across the country and it helped me a lot. Best portable CB I have used.

I read the reviews and thought that maybe people just got some bad equipment. Well I doubt it. I bought one along with my neighbor. Theirs didn't work at all and exchanged it. Then we get about 3 tenths of a mile work or reception. Junk. Taking it back tommorrow.

By Jeff S from Zanesville, OH on 3/16/2007
Pros:
Durable, Easy to use

Good handheld Radio. Not a substitute for a mobile or base radio. Reception is not bad outside the vehicle, but inside with the engine running you lose all but the closest Stations. That's not the radio's fault.

By Mike F from New Jersey on 6/29/2006
Pros:
Durable, Easy to use, Good Value

I am a Amateur Radio Operator and this radio is a good radio but if you want to get out anywhere you need either a Magnetic Mount or a large whip antenna. Many people make the mistake of thinking that the poor reception and transmit power is because CB Radios can only transmit 4 watts of power. That is not the case what is really going on is the little antenna "Rubber Ducky" IS TERRIBLE even for my HAM Radio it is terrible they are good for CLOSE RANGE BUT NOT FOR LONG RANGE COMMUNICATIONS. When I say close range I mean around the block close. It is not anything that Radio Shack did or anyother companies it is just howw the radio wave travels. My suggestion is to buy a whip antenna that screws on to the top of the radio that will give you some more range, or if your going to use it in the car buy a Magnetic mount antenna for the roof. That will work the best.

Pros:
Durable, Easy to use, Good reception, Good Value

Pros - Strong battery, WX alert reception, 3M range with external antenna Cons - Poor sound quality from speaker, not loud enough, 1M range or less with rubber ducky Conclusion - Awesome radio. I had this during the 2005 hurricane season when I lived in northern Florida. DON'T BE CAUGHT DEAD W/O A CB LIKE THIS! Outstanding battery life (Ni-MH). NOAA and National Weather Service alerts are the best. Now I am in tornado alley in Oklahoma...another great reason to own this radio. Buy!

By Charles S from Roswell, GA on 1/21/2006
Pros:
Durable, Easy to use, Good reception, Good Value

Excellent CB radio and design; compact, good sound quality (for a handheld)and very good transmission/reception. However, you will need an external antenna. Skip the one listed with the radio on the Radio Shack site and go for the 39" magnetic-mount mobile CB antenna (21-972). Followed a previous reviewer's recomendation. He was right!

By Tom E from Missoula, Montana on 1/1/2006
Pros:

This handheld is a pretty nice radio. although, the antenna that comes with it does not get very good range. The box says it gets a 4 mile range, but you are lucky to get a half mile range. If you purchas this item, be sure to get an addational antenna.

By Alan W from Nashville,TN on 12/12/2005
Pros:
Durable, Easy to use, Good Value

This is a pretty good handheld radio; more so for weather band than as a CB unless you use an optional external antenna. Reception for the CB band is poor with the stubby antenna that comes with the radio. The weather band works well with the short antenna. I ordered a 39" magnetic-mount mobile CB antenna (21-972) and a RF BNC adapter (278-120). The radio (both the weather and CB bands) works great with the new antenna.

I bought one and put it on my motorcycle. It works great for me. I used a separate antenna. You can't expect much range from the stubbie antenna. I have been well pleased with the product and bought another one for another bike I have. People that I talk to tell me it sounds as good as the $600 radios they have.
