I had this radio for about 4 years before I upgraded. Without an SWR/RF/S meter though, you're pretty much flying blind. You can't tell if your antenna is tuned, you can't tell how strong your signal is, and you can't tell how strong anyone else's is. That makes it hard to judge the distance of other stations. If you don't care and just want something that works, then get this one, but if you want something you can actually tune up and peak out, then look elsewhere.

I use this primarily for off-roading, communicating from truck to truck and it works fine with that. I am using a 48" whip and it gets the job done. If I had to depend on it to communicate on a more regular basis I would have gone with a more high quality set-up. But for a weekend wheeler It works great

Thought my TRC 428 was getting tired, going to replace it with the 503. Doesn't measure up at all. My old tired [$]yard sale radio kicks its butt.

So far, I am very pleased ...
By Joe RVerified Reviewer from Schaumburg, IL on 4/8/2007

So far, I am very pleased with this unit. It's a basic CB, and that's what the price reflects. using a decent antenna I did get reception from 10 miles away which sounded very clear- - very impressive.

I work in the oil field ...
By Ron M from Texas Panhandle on 4/1/2007

I work in the oil field in the Texas panhandle. So in looking for a radio,I needed a lot of range. This unit is awesome. The other morning I had to give directions into a well site to a truck driver. When he keyed up,I asked his location. When he told me where he was,I couldn't hardley believe it.This small radio was talking right at 13 miles. Also I might add I use a glass mount ant. You can't go wrong with this unit.Thanks.

Pros:
Durable, Easy to use, Good reception, Good Value

I love this CB! Its incredibly small and can be transfered easily from place to place. It really puts out too. In the city I easily get 5 miles with 4 watts on a radioshack 35 dollar antenna. Good to start out with too. Good Buy!

By Lee B from Elgin, IL on 12/28/2006
Pros:
Durable, Easy to use, Good reception, Good Value

Very good CB for the money! I used to have a Midland 1000 but this fits much nicer in my car and works ALOT better than my old Midland 1000. I am using a 102" whip with it and it works just as good as some of the more expensive CBs out there. The only improvement would be that they could have put a signal meter on it.

This Cb is good for ...
By Franco P from Richmond County on 12/4/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Good Value

This Cb is good for people who can not mount a larger CB in their car. I would recommend getting a very good antenna to use with this radio since performance of a CB often depends mostly on the size and quality of the antenna. If you are using a good size and quality antenna then this radio will perform as well as some of the bigger ones. If your space and budget allows i would recommend going with a larger SSB/AM Cb.

By Rick M from NY on 10/2/2006
Pros:
Durable, Easy to use, Good reception, Good Value

This is a great little CB that's perfect for using with a cigarette lighter and a magnet mount antenna for temporary use on long trips. It really "gets out" and has impressed me so much I bought a second one for my other vehicle and permanently mounted it. The only problem is the disply is hard to see in direct sunlight. As a CB'er for over 25 years this little radio has really impressed me!

Lool out for the 90 day warranty. I developed a hum when I transmit, and since it is over 90 days since I purchased it, I am out of a radio. Last one that I will buy here.

I think this is a great unit. Fits nice under the dash board. If you want real nice reception though get the 48in. dual whip antenna. Its pricey, but worth it.

This radio is awsome!!!! I have been using it on my tube frame desert runner (buggy) with a 48" whip for more than a year. It has held up to the abuse and high vibration. Output and reception are excellent. Simplicity and durability is what you need when bouncing over the bumbs.

Pros:

It is a good radio when set up correctly I have had only one problem with a lot of RF feedback but that was cured by tightening down the circuit board screws. I have DX with people all over the country with this radio with no loss of signal I also can transmit pretty much with enough power to reach all over the city.

By Colin T from Franklin Co, OH on 10/26/2005
Pros:
Durable, Easy to use, Good reception, Good Value

I VERY good tranceiver for the money. It's nice how it's so small, yet has very powerful audio and transmit power. The audio is so good, it is comparable to the audio of Motorola's Maxtrac series business mobiles that many fire departments use and swear by. Exellent audio! Very good radio overall!
