Works GREAT in my shack
By Ken FolsomVerified Reviewer from Yucaipa, CA on 10/24/2008
Pros:
Clean Graphics, Clear Signal, Easy To Use, Good ballistics on meter, Lightweight, Mic Front Mount, RF Gain good, Solid Chassis
Cons:
No SSB-NOT A KILL, Stock mic undermodulated
Best Uses:
Base Unit, City Operations, Emergencies, Families
Describe Yourself:
Casual Adventurer
Primary use:
Personal
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use this unit in my shack(I'm a ham, too) to talk to other CBers in town and on the I-10. Modulation was weak until I replaced stock mic with a "Desk-Top Voice-Compressed Power Mic". Gotta watch the mic input and the "Power-Mic" output. It is easy to over-modulate with such a scheme.

I like the 'touchy/feely' controls. After about one week, I was able to control the unit by feel with my left hand. I'm a righty.

WX receive is deaf. But in all fairness, I am using this unit as a base tranceiver with a Crossbow 10/11 meter vertical antenna. When I connect the tranceiver to my 5/8 Collinear vert, I get S9+10dB on WX. Since I have a dedicated VHF antenna and 2M rig, I see no need to utilize the WX capabilities, but it works just fine.

I bought this radio off a friend of mine, added a few extras to it, and I hooked it up to a 102" whip, SWR hardly moved, got out 30 miles on it easy. I could hear people 100 miles away. GREAT RADIO to have! WX band is a lifesaver if you live in the Midwest.

i have this same radio its a very easy radio to use but the price is higher than it should be (you can find a better deal on some online cb store sites) it is a good radio to start out with iv got it in my truck with a wilson 1000 hooked up to it and im at about a 1 on my swr meter i can go 6 miles easy with it the only bad thing about the radio is the mic the plastic starts squeeking and gets loose over time so all of that noise gets transmited while your talking to it might help to get a different mic

I bought one of these about 7 or 8 years ago and I've been extremely happy with it. At that point I was traveling back and forth from Virginia Tech to home pretty much every weekend. It was a 300+ mile round trip and the CB came in very handy. The illumination is helpful, the weather stations are handy, and it's great for keeping track of traffic flow, and frequently I travel with other folks so the radio is good for communication. Back home it has been very handy for use around the farm. I bought a Wilson 1000 antenna to use with it and it's been installed on my truck ever since.

These are the best radios you can buy. I know at least 4 modifications you can do to this radio. Power mods, audio mods, extra channel mods, LCD mods, and MUCH more! This radio puts out a fair amount of power without moding it.
