Lack of vista / XP info. I had to find info on this in user comments section of the product. Then it still did not work to connect to my dish network DVR to back up my movies.
Larry P's instructions are exactly right for using it on Vista, just don't skip any steps! If you already ran the install once, run it again and when it asks you to remove all files, say YES. Then reboot. Then follow his instructions for XP Service Pk 2 compatablity. Then install the cable and the device will be properly recognized. I was very glad that my prior [$] investment wasn't wasted! (Now you can pick one up for [$], pretty good deal.)
I couldn't find any solution for transfering or copying my files to my new computer but this solved the dilema. Just install the software and plug in the usb ports and it will let you drag and drop files between both computers. [$] [...]
For those of you who haven't figured out how to use with Vista. Here's exactly what you need to do. 0. Uninstall any previous non working installations on your vista computer. Reboot. 1. Insert CD 2. Open up CD drive (E: ?) in windows explorer. 3. Find the file Setup.exe; right click it 4. Click Properties 5. Click Compatibility 6. Check the box "run in compatibility mode for:" and ensure that windows XP service pack 2 is selected. 7. Click OK 8. Run the setup program. QED
I chose a middle of the road rating because I too have the vista / XP problem not only with this device but anything I try to run on the new machine. (less than a week) I hope this fix works.
Thank you, Brian W.! You are right. Once I followed your tip, the program worked like a charm, even with Vista. Unfortunately, not all buyers of this USB bridge will have access to your advice. I wish the manufacturer had added a note on this in the documentation.
Despite instructions mentioned by my predessor (poor instructions because it does not say which programs should be used) writer, I could not transfer the files from my old Windows XP based desktop to Vista based laptop.
Everyone that says this cable doesn't work with Vista is incorrect. I spent less that five minutes & had it working on a Windows XP desktop & a Vista Ultimate laptop. The only thing you have to do special is go into the properties page for the setup program on the CD in Windows Explorer. Under the Compatibility tab, you need to check the box under Compatibility mode for Widows XP (Service Pack 2). After that, run the setup program on any computers you need to transfer file to & from & connect the cable. Start the program on both computers & connect to each of them & you're ready to go.
I was using this with my Laptop and desktop. It worked great! Then I got a new desktop with Vista...what a disapointment.
Works exactly as advertised. NOTE - As stated DOES NOT WORK WITH VISTA!!!!!!!
Pointless with Vista
Not Vista Compatable
I agree with John Y. Works great with XP, but cannot for the life of me get Vista to recognize the driver for it. I'll post something if I figure out how, but so far it is useless to me.
THIS CABLE IS NOT THE SAME THING AS THE BELKIN EASY TRANSFER CABLE - This one is NOT recognized by Vista. DO NOT listen to the people at your local Radio Shack, it's not 'exactly the same thing for half price.' One product works and one does not.
Hooking it into Windows XP is a breeze I'll give it that but if you are going from an XP system to Vista...forget about it. Windows Vista doesn't even recognize the USB cable. If its for XP its good, otherwise stay away from this product until its Vista compliant.
I am not a computer expert but I found it very easy to use and my 10 year old son had no problems using it either, I had recently purchase a new computer and we used it to take things of the old one to be transferred to the new one, we also used it on the laptop. I found this was the best way to transfer data with out having to repurchase some of the games we purchased online. I would say it was worth its money!
