I've had one since May. Picks up all channels with old Radio Shack rabbit ears/UHF loop with fine tuning feature. Picture is great on 10 year old Toshiba, better than analog ever was. Recording with VCR requires a bit of setup, but the result is great.
Comes with 6 month warrenty from company, but Radio Shack has 30 day return/90 day warrenty in case you get a bad one (they are made in China).
Don't use the converter box volume control to adjust the volume, leave it set at max and use your TV or home theater volume to control loudness.

These things receive VERY poorly. My parents got 2 of these and complained to me they could not receive some channels at all. I brought my Zenith DTV box to their house to test and it worked fine. They took both of theirs back and now are quite happy with the Zenith units they replaced them with.

Hooked up to rabbit ears antenna on set and here in Tucson, AZ I get DVD quaility on 14 channels. Had I knows that more channels were avalable here in stead of the five analog channels I would have bought this long ago.

I purchased 2 of these units and have found that both show signs of having the same severe audio problems. First, both insert a high level of background hiss into the audio channel. Second, I have to disconnect the right audio channel to minimize distortion of the audio. Third, if you hook the converter into your home theater system you'll go nuts trying get good audio.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The Digital Stream DTX9900 converter box works great. We use an antenna, and now get 33 stations instead of the 9 that we received before, and they come in with great clarity. Unlike several reviews which claim that one can only record with a VCR by using the instant recording method, and not by the timer method, one can use the timer quite successfully. You have to keep the converter box on when you record, and you have to tune your VCR to channel 3 (or 4, depending on your location). You do not have to leave your TV on, but it must be tuned to the channel you wish to record), and it is tuned through the converter box channel selector - the TV is always set at channel 3 or 4 and you use the channel selector on the converter box to enter the channel you wish to watch or record. Do not use the TV remote to select channels, other than channel 3 or 4, so that it can receive signals from your converter box and VCR. Use the same setting (3 or 4) that you set your TV to for tuning the converter box. For example, if you wish to record channel 9, have that channel on the TV that you are watching, but always enter channel 3 or 4 on the VCR when you select your channel. That is your pass through channel that allows the VCR to access your TV.
One additional caveat: you have to go into your converter box MENU and settings to cut OFF the automatic power cut off for the converter box. It is preset to cut off after 2, 4, or 8 hours, so that it doesn't use up energy if you fail to cut it off when you finish watching your TV program. You can easily disenable this through your MENU selector. Otherwise, if you wish to record a program 6 hours hence, and your factory preset it at 4 hour cutoff, as mine was, it won't record. Remember, the converter box must be ON in order to record. When the time to record is reached, it will not cut on your converter box if it is off.
Use the FCC website which has clear instructions on how to set up the system and how to record with a VCR. The one defect of the instruction manual that comes with the Digital Stream is that it did not explain how to record by using your VCR. It only shows you how to connect the converter box to your TV. So check the FCC website: "Setting up your digital-to-analog converter box with a VCR". It is very clearly written and it tells you all you need to know to record with your VCR.
If you want to watch one channel and record another, you need a second converter box, and that setup is much more complicated. The FCC instructions mentioned above contain diagrams explaining both setups.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Have purchased several for an elderly anut. One was flawed, received wrong control (was informed by Radio Shack, when I took it back and ordered an additional one) and only would receive two channels. Reception is fine on the others, at times ("weak signal"). Reception is vey good on the channels that are received, inhanced, clear picture and sound. [...]The other converters did receive more channels than that are normally received! It appears that I would wait for the complete conversion in 2009 to truly give an accurate and honest rating of the product. [...]Yes, the converter box may need some adjustment. But it seems to be a good product.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
So, we got two of these about 4 months ago and one is apparently unable to receive a decent signal anymore
While verifying that the box was the issue rather than an antenna, I was putting it in the position as the other box and when I was pulling the cord out of the back of the TV, the wire came out, but the part wrapping the wire (goes around the screw that the antenna would go onto) didn't follow.
Very disappointing.
It's good while it works, but really, neither lasted very long.
It's still under warranty, so I can only hope they have decent service.

I use a regular antena(Rabit ears),but if you want to buy a new one I recomend the Zenith HD antena. You can hook the box up to your VSR too. The picture is so much better and NO Static! I like The EPG. The TV remote is usefull and easy to program. Fav. saves all Your favorite chanels. The menu is simple and strait forward. If you want to watch good old analog you press the A/D Button and Change chanels With your OLD remote, minor flaw. The power Button on the box only works when you hold it down. The Box gets relly hot and When it gets heated up it afects the picture, so check temp before agusting the antenna; I wouldn't Leave it on all day either. becase of this I would only buy the box if it go's in the open.

[...] I perform the simply setup and tells me no signal. I move the box to another set and the same problem. The menu system is very initutive and easy to get around, I quickly found that the Signal Strength was 0. This did give me a perfect chance to check out the analog pass through signal. I turned the box off and all my old channels came back.I will return this unit [...] It looks like a good box, remote and menu setup, just watch out for the defective boxes.Hope to update my progress.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This is a review of the slightly updated DTX-9950 rather than the DTX-9900. Even though I had two coupons, I only bought one of these first to check out how well it works. Actually my local Radio Shack doesn't have any in stock, so they ordered it for me. Setup was very easy; just connect antenna, connect to TV using either the F jack or the RCA jacks (which is what I used) and then go into the menu to scan for the channels. With an amplified antenna, I was able to get all the local stations. The universal remote seems to lose your setting when the battery gets very low, so you might have to program it for you TV again. It would be nice to be able to turn on/off the converter box and TV with the push of one button instead of relying on the power buttons for both devices to turn on/off. The remote can't operate at as wide an angle as my TV remote-->so you've to point your remote toward the DTV box in order for the box to receive your signal (it could also be that the receiver in the DTV box might be recessed a bit?). The reception strength on this converter box is better than either of the two HDTV tuners that I have in my computers, though I can get 1080p on my tuner, whereas with all these CECB's, the output is limited to 480i...

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I have 2 of these units, one is used on a 13 inch Sony TV, and the other is used on a 32 inch Panasonic. I strongly recommend this converter box to be used on any TV set that needs upgrade to DTV because it works really well without any problems. The user interface of this converter box is simply user-friendly, containing simple steps for any programming. A meter for reception tells you how to position your antenna for the best quality even though any reception besides no reception still works. I also read many reviews and seen many tests on this converter box comparing it with others and its quality bests over the rest (without any exaggerations).

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The installation took about 10 minutes to disconnect the antenna from the back of the TV, reconnect into the converter box, and run the cable from the box to the TV. Very Simple.
I was able to enter to codes supplied in the manual to allow the converter box remote to control the TV audio and the power. The set-up wizzard that pops up on the screen the first time the box is turned on accurately guides you through the set-up process. We now get several more PBS channels than before plus a few more network options.
I would highly recommend this converter box to anyone.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I've had it a month and a half. I bought it with the $40 coupon and made sure that when the clerk ordered the box for me I could take it back if I needed to without any issues.
Set up was easy, I'm not any kind of engineer but was able to hook it up without bothering with the included instructions. It improved the quality of the pictures for the channels I get. Even with Rabbit Ears, I don't get much to start with. The important thing is that I get the channels that I want and that they come in clearly. The Plus is the extra channels that came with it.
It's nothing special, it's not going to solve any major or minor problems outside of the digital analog issue.
The only problem is that the dvd player won't work unless I plug it into the switcher box and plug the digital box into the switcher. That's it. My one complaint.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Unit pulls in stations very well. Don't blame the unit if your picture isn't good. Get a good antenna! Set up was a piece of cake. The remote controls the TV power and volume which is very convenient.
The ZOOM button on the remote lets you change aspect ratios, which is great because not all broadcasts will fit your screen exactly. If you have a wide screen TV or a regular CRT TV then you will appreciate this button. The remote is set up well and easy to use. I recommend using the RCA jacks to connect to the TV instead of the RF connector. The picture improves immensely with the RCA jack connectors. I would highly recommend this unit so much so that I am going to buy another one with the pass through feature.

I followed directions in user manual for 2 units on 2 TVs. On one TV it worked OK for 1 night then quit. Remote never did work even with fresh batteries. On the 2nd TV, when I turned it on, all I got was static and digital noise. No picture. I had the cables connected like the manual showed. The remote on the 2nd TV never did work, not even Off/On. I don't know what to do next.

The Source button on the Remote Control Device is null and void. I spoke with a Technical person @ Digital Stream and he told me that the jacks in the back were output, if "u" going to connect your DVD or VCR to the box then the jacks MUST be input.
Some of the Radio Shack employees in the Northwest section of Washington, DC appear to be puzzle when I inform them of this flaw.
I hope Digital Stream's lastes version has all the kinks out.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I would like to add to the previous review. When I mentioned 9, I meant channel 9,but I did a rescan today and channel 9 matter of fact (2)channel 9's came thru, one being the weather station. I also didn't mention and should have that I'm able to control my volume from the converter remote. I turn the regular tv up and then I can turn the volume up or down with the converter remote. As you see I changed by ratings to 5 stars because now all channels are showing plus many more. I doubled my channels plus a few more. So give this a try. This is the kind of product, at least for me if vouchers wasn't involved I would still have brought it but on the other hand, the vouchers helped. So for some readers who were not pleased, try rescanning and you may have to re-adjust you antenna but not by much. Naturally, I can't turn off the tv with this remote but who cares.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I'm very satisfied. I have 5 tv's in 5 rooms including the kitchen. A 13" in the kitchen, haven't hooked that one up yet to a receiver but I will be getting another one when I can get another voucher. I had got the 1st one and was going to get another one at a later date at another retailer so I would have something to compare. Well, after I hooked up that one I was impressed. I am very satisfied. I am getting 9 from time to time more not then do but I have found out that in some cases, all you have to do is adjust your rabbit ears antena and you've got a perfect picture.I do hope by Feb I can get 9 with no problem. If not I can either do without it or get a more expensive one and hope for the best. I can get (CW) which I couldn't before clearly. I was missing SMALLVILLE which is one of my favorite shows. Now it and many others come thru. I have went from 8 channels to 18. It may have to do with where one is located. By the way, I went back to Radio Shack to get another one but the store clerk said someone gave him a voucher to give to someone who may need it, they only needed one. Well, guess what? I guess I was there at the right time because before he knew I had one he offered me the voucher which I appreciated and then I was able to get two more instead of the one.I hooked the other two up. I don't need to make a comparison with another receiver, the only thing I can say is that I'm smiling like a kid on a toy shopping spree. I hate that some people had a bad experience with theirs and are dissatisfied with the product. It really may have something to do with location but I AM VERY SATISFIED.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Maybe I purchased a dud. My unit is very sensitive to signal strength and rotary antenna has to be adjusted much more frequently than should be. Also buttons on remote control react too quickly which is probably a typical example of switch bounce. I thought this was best Digital Stream could do, so I put it back in box and went back to analog and will try it again in Feb. 09. In meantime I used my other coupon and purchased a RCA unit at a cheaper price from a popular box store. I was surprised at how well it performed and it's design features. This experience told me I probably had a dud from Digital Stream/Radio Shack but by this time my 30 day satisfaction guarantee had expired. A good example of corporate "got you" in the rush to get products on the market and retrieve those government coupons.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
It gets better digital reception than the built-in digital receiver in my Sharp Aquos TV forked off the same antenna. I thought the Universal TV controller part wouldn't work, but I kept trying. Sometimes, for some of the 150 universal presets, it was able to shut off the TV, but still couldn't control volume. But I kept trying to find the right code set by clicking 150 times with the up arrow, then 30 times back with the down arrow until I found the correct code for my junky Phillips TV. Woohoo!
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
After 2 weeks, the converter power on light (green) started to flicker and change to red after a minute or two of turning the unit on. It was still working for a week (receiving stations), but soon after the reception became erratic, sometimes dropping the signal completely for no apparent reason. Piece of junk!

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Works great in the Metro Atlanta area, pulls in over two dozen channels/subchannels, all crystal clear. I have an omni-directional HDTV antenna mounted in the attic which feeds the signal thru a splitter to the cable outlets in each room. The unit was very easy to program right out of the box. I had it up and runnning within 5 mins. I like the features such as the program guide, aspect ratio switching, signal strength meter, etc. I have it running through a DVD/VCR player. It supplies a strong signal to the TV even with the player turned off. The VCR tapes from it just fine. Only con (minor one) is that it was a little tricky to program the remote to control the TV at first, but after a few trys I finally figured it out and now it controls the TV just fine (although only the bare basics of power and volume control plus video source switching, but that's about all I ever use anyway). I like it so far after about a month of use...will probably get two more for my other analog TVs.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This is an excellent converter box, one of the best on the market. These people who give it a bad rating (especially "The Ambassador of Technology in west Hollywood, FL.") don't have a clue what they are talking about. Installation is SIMPLE, just install it in between your antenna and your TV. I live in Pembroke Pines, FL, just one mile from west Hollywood, and with a run of the mill amplified rabbit ear antenna I get over thirty channels perfectly, just as good as cable without the bill. The remote WILL control the TV (on/off, input selection and volume) there are 150 TV codes programmed into the remote so you may have to be patient scanning through them to find the one for your TV but with 150 manufacturers codes the chances are that it will work on yours. The electronic program guide is also very good but the results are only as good as what the TV station chooses to send, some stations send nothing at all but that is not the fault of the converter. Hopefully this will improve as we get closer to February 2009. I chose the Digital Stream converter over the others on the market because it has the most features and has received excellent reviews. I would recommend this converter to anyone, and don't wait until 2009. Almost all TV stations are transmitting in digital already and it so much better than analog, why not enjoy it now?

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Use it with a 1998 Sony TV designed for fringe area reception, a Sony VCR from around the same era, a Terk55 antenna mounted about a foot from the ceiling and facing east to an 8 foot doorwall. Input goes through the VCR.
Reception is better for both digital and analog stations than it was without this converter. That may be partly because the Terk55 works as both a digital and an analog antenna.
Why analog pass through? Those of us in Northern border states are used to getting Canadian TV stations. In Detroit the primary one is channel 9. With this gizmo, channel 9 comes through better than it ever has.
It would be nice if there were a way to program the remote to control the TV. If there is, nothing that came with this gives any indication of it.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I bought this using my first DTV coupon card. The program menus are better than some and set-ups are OK and user friendly. Some minor menu details could be improved. In an urban setting with basic rabbit ears, signal strength was adequate, however some pixelization does occur. I also have an Echostar/Dish network "DTV Pal" that has better guides and event timers, but no provisions for powering on/off the TV with the DTV remote. Reception performance was about the same. More and better performing coupon eligible boxes are showing up. Read reviews if you can before you buy.

I beg of any: do not buy this "converter box!" I am a tech wiz and this is the worst piece of tech-
nology I have ever seen!! Even with the most expensive, reliable antenna, this converter box loses signal very easily, cheaply builted, and will not last; even after 2/17/09. Take my advice into consideration: do NOT buy. It's a waste of time, money and, if possesed, a coupon.

Hooked up this unit, and got a whopping 25 channels as compared to the 9 through regular analog. Will have to do a TV/Channel scan again to get a missing channel.
Amplified antenna works well, but the box can be finicky on reception with 1 channel.
Bought two for my mom - will test the other to ensure they work.
This box DOES HAVE PASS-THROUGH. It has to be turned off, or you must use the A/D button to activate. Tested this mode, works fine.
I have this unit hooked up to me DVD Recorder through the A/V connections.
I am using a splitter between tv and recorder. So far, so good.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Location....Belmont, MA..first floor of a 2 floor brick building...
I purchased the Digital Stream DTX9900 for use with my kitchen tv, a Realistic 5 1/2" portable color tv/monitor(purchased 1989. Connected them using the A/V cable. Yellow(video) and Red(Audio)....The tv is mono. Antenna.....I experimented with a DB4, a DB2, and a homemade loop antenna connected to a balun and 3 foot rg6 cable.....all were setup indoors(in the kitchen). The DB4 and the DB2 received 18 channels. The 7" galvanized wire loop/cable picked up 22 channels. Signal levels were about the same on all....70 or 80 or better. The input sensitivity was more than acceptable. The Channelmaster amp (@20db) I tried made no difference. The audio was good(mono). I could hook it up to a set of powered computer speakers or stereo system if need be. All functions worked well. The EPG is excellent, especially when compared to other product presently available. Overall, the DTX9900 is a good unit. Rather than complain about what I would like to see done differently, I just play with the 9900, learn how it operates, learn the "shortcut" pushbuttons and enjoy it. It does what it is supposed to do very well. It will not work with the "rabbit ear" type antenna.....but....it will work with the (homemade)UHF (loop) type antenna. So before you buy the bright and shiny "PLASTIC" HDTV antenna, try your old vintage uhf/vhf (LOOP/not rabbit ears)antenna. I do admit that I got lucky with the loop antenna. In many cases, your location, distance from the xmitter, and signal blockers(the weather-buildings-trees-walls-metal surfaces) are significant elements when considering dtv reception. A good outside antenna is better than the best inside antenna. I would recommend this unit. It worked well for me. Just keep in mind that your location/ antenna may/will effect your reception. ENJOY.....

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I bought this from radio shack at the mall. When i went in there, i asked for the RCA converter box. the person behind the register got the digital stream one out, and said it was the only one they had. i took it, but worried about it having problems with it being my first d.s. product. but let me tell you, this is a great product. the small design fits perfectly with my other a/v devices. the remote is easy to use, and is nice and small. the analog pass-thru is a great feature, which works good 'til 2/17/09.
The setup was easy, and even a 5 year old can do it. Just get a good antenna, because my $75 RCA HDTV antenna struggle with some channels. I will fix that my buying a better outdoor antenna. Buy this, you won't be disappointed. Just remember the composite ports on the back of the dtv box are to hook to your tv for better quality, NOT for hooking up a dvd player or digital camera.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
On stations with a strong signal the picture is clear, but occasional pixelation occurs. On stations with weak signal, pixelation happens more frequently and sometimes the picture freezes. Overall, the picture is better than with analog signal. The audio has an unpleasant characteristic that is hard to describe (compared to the audio with an analog signal). The audio occasionally drops out on stations with a strong signal, and that happens more frequently on stations with a weak signal. Overall, the audio is better with the analog signal. The most frustrating thing about this converter is that when I go to a station that has a weak signal, the converter does not respond to any commands from the remote control. Therefore, I can't change the channel, or turn down the volume even though the picture is just swirling pixels and the audio is just grating noise. I can turn the converter off with the switch on the converter, but when I turn it back on, I get the same weak station. I can only get rid of it by enduring the noise for about 20 seconds at which time the converter changes to another station automatically. It also takes commands for stations as suggestions. For example, if I hit 5, it displays 5 on the screen for a couple of seconds, then changes it to 49 and then gives me channel 49. If I hit 31, it displays 31 for a few seconds, then changes it to 11, and then gives me channel 11. This is the only converter I have used and I don't know if they all have these problems.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
So I guess I am torn as I have not tried any units made by other companies. Basically I was sold the box (using the givernment program card) but still had to buy an HD antenna from Radio Shack. Either the unit sucks or the antenna sucks...I wasn't sure which one so I am posting on both. I live dead in the heart of Memphis just a few miles from all of the major TV stations and their antennas. I have to constantly adjust the antenna when I switch stations and never get much better than a minimal signal. If this is the future...lord help us all. Oh and the recever box and antenna are UGLY...but if they worked better I could get past the aesthetics issue.

I live in a valley 30 miles South of Lynchburg, VA
I have a 1980 Radio Shack Color Eagle II [185 mile range] UHF/VHF antenna connected to a 1980 R/S Rotor. With the aid of the D/S automatic station programmer, I have logged 74 channels from Staunton, VA to Newport News/Norfork, VA. Also from Greensboro, NC to Raliegh, NC. I wonder what stations I would find if I had the new Color Eagle antenna? I also have a R/S 120 mile range antenna on a R/S rotor that can pick up some stations that the Big One cannot!
With the Digital Stream Remote, You Control the TV. Other DTV boxes let the TV Control You!

got this box yesterday. is going back tomorrow. only brought in two channels well, rest had scrambled picture. every channel had a different volume. when you used the analog pass thru you had to go back and use remote that came with tv. I can understand when you shut the box off...but when you used the A/D button, you should be able to use the converter remote. converter box remote could not be used once you went to analog.

Ok Box does not pass though analog nor does it state that it will.
Next: Box comes preset to auto shut off after four hours if you simply go into the menu you can shut this off..
The remote control included WILL work with most TV's.
The AV jacks on the back of this box are OUTPUTS not to be confused with a place to plug in your DVD or VCR.
Box MUST be programmed in order to recieve any stations. If you get break up of signal etc. you may need a better antenna.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
PLEASE READ THIS! As you read through the reviews on this product you will see that many people give it low ratings and say it does not work. Unfortunately what these reviewers fail to understand is that digital TV signals work very differently from conventional signals and in many cases it is necessary to use a different type of antenna in order to pick them up. Anyone who complains "I used to get a channel and now I get nothing" fails to acknowledge that this is NOT a result of the Digital Stream converter being a bad product, but merely the fact that they are trying to pick up the new technology on an old antenna. The truth is unless you live within a relatively short distance of the television transmitter itself (several miles), an old fashioned set of "rabbit ears" sitting on top of the TV is probably not good enough to do the job. For one thing, most of the new digital signals are on UHF channels, even if the channel number is a low VHF number. Rabbit ears do not pick up UHF. Adding a simple "loop" or "bow tie" UHF antenna to the ears could make a world of difference. And if not there are numerous outdoor antennas that are reasonably priced and not entirely unattractive. If you live way out in the country I can almost guarantee you'll need an outdoor antenna. But please, don't blame the converter box if you don't understand the technology. You need a UHF antenna and a strong enough signal to work with. I have had this converter for two months and it an excellent product with great features. I understand the technology from personal experience in the broadcasting industry. Thanks.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
We have used two boxes for about 6 weeks, and we are generally very satisfied. In the Detroit area, our reception went from 8 poor-quality analog channels to 15 mostly high-quality, high-content digital channels and subchannels. We currently don't have cable, but when we sign up (soon), I will A/B the digital broadcast signal with the cable so we are sure to have access to the new, specialized subchannels.
Box setup was easy, and channel acquisition a no-brainer. The only exception was the universal remote. It's awkward not to be able to directly enter numeric codes for the various TV brands, which is how every other universal remote I've seen does it. This isn't necessarily a job-stopper, but be ready for it. One issue we've had that makes this quirk more of a pain: one of the remotes has inexplicably lost its TV program three times now. We haven't connected it with any event, or any action on our part-- one moment the remote controls the TV, the next moment it doesn't. Then the batteries have to come out to make the remote lose its mind, and the awkward programming process gets repeated.
Aside from this, the converters work great. I would like to see less filtering on the signal strength meter, so the results of antenna tuning can be seen sooner. As it is, we have to change the antenna in small increments and wait for a while until the meter settles down. This isn't needed often, though. Signal strength in our area is usually good. Now, if only the CBC in Windsor would go digital so I can watch "Hockey Night in Canada" next year....

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This unit actually pulls in more channels than the one DTV we have. It's gets the regular channels a lot clearer than the big DTV.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
If you have trouble running the setup wizard, connect your converter box to the TV and run your TV's original auto channel. Then go to channel 3/4 and run the setup wizard's auto channel. This should fix the problem. The reception with my rabbit ears was very weak so I bought Radio Shacks Amplified VHF/UHF/HDTV, with automatic adjustment by remote control, for about [$]bucks. It is well worth the money.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
We have two different brands of converter boxes and so far this one works the best (magnavox and digital stream). Both work good but the Digital Stream pulls in more channels, signal meter is easier to use, lay out of the EPG shows the next few hours of shows on one screen, if you misplace the remote you can still change the channels on the box (even though the control is on the top of the box which could be inconvenient for some), the best feature for me is that the remote will also control most t.v.'s power and volume.
I am basing my review off of an 8 year old t.v. and a new indoor 22dB amplifier antenna from Radio Shack. The picture and sound are just fine, no problems. In my case I connected with an Audio/Video cable for the best picture and an RF cable for the sound.
I do not have anything negative to say. It was a nice step up from the magnavox brand.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I receive "Off the air". I searched many hours comparing features of these creatures. Due to one of a very limited "coupon authorized" models with universal remote and tv volume control, I merely went to the lcoal Radio Shack for this model. Only drawback for starters, not mentioned in the manual, screen starts with "weak (NO) signal" Rechecked all the cables and finally pressed the "Menu" button and was on my way. Could not be easier. Was fully working in about 4 minutes. Even my two large HDTV's do not have "Electronic Program Guide" with "Program Info" for each. My wife wants to save all the decent analog TV's and buy more of these units @ [$]. Sure the HD is great for the relaxed watching but for the utility, i.e. kitchen, guest room, work room etc, we don't need to see the HD sharpness of the Bee's knees and stuff. The "Zoom" mode gives full screen format with no loss of scene that I can see. Also, small enough that I just velcroed the unit to the side of the TV. Neat.

We use to get in ABC and KCAL, now we don't get those, but KVCR only. I can only watch so much PBS.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Similar interface and performance as the other boxes I tried in this price range (Zenith and Insignia), but the remote control is more ergonomic and it controls both the TV volume and the on/off. I especially looked for this feature, because it makes no sense to have to go around with two remotes to control the TV volume (other boxes allow volume control through the box, as this one also does, but one has to max the volume of the TV and tolerate the associated hissing, which is pretty silly). The only feature missing that the other two had is the display of the channel number in the front (this box only has a minimalistic red/green LED).
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Great little unit, video quality challenges satellite reception. I cannot find anywhere online if it has the Smart Antenna feature, however it sure works like it does! I'm located between 2 transmitter locations & with my old (25 yrs) antenna the stations that it isn't pointed at were always giving ghost images. With this box all stations front & rear (antenna reference) give a beautiful picture.
I was going to wait on the analog pass through models before buying a 2nd converter, however I'm so pleased with this one I'll probably get another one like this model. I can work around the pass through with a splitter on the analog input.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I was pleasently supprised by the quality of the picture. Even with the on screen menu there are no noticable color artifacts.
I am currently using amplified rabbit ears and get all but 2 of the local stations; one of which is difficult to get under the best conditions.
It's nice to see off the air programs that rival digital satelite television.
The signal strength meter is a nice feature but it can only be used with channels that it has found.
I would like the ability to add channels manually, then I could reposition the antenna until I had sutible signal strength.
All in all I would recommend this converter to anyone trying to decide what one to get.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Considered all other models from Radio Shack and other stores and online -- researched their good and bad points and decided on the Digital Stream, am not disappointed. It does everything it should. EZ to setup and use, controls TV and unit, can manually add/delete channels.
I have a splitter from the antenna to the TV and to the VCR to record, works fine. I get more Spanish channels and fewer of the standard broadcast channels, not sure if that's going to change when the switch happens (doubt it)... so looking to improve the signal I get, maybe add a second mast or a larger antenna (from a 32 to 57 element).
I tried the In-line Signal Amplifier "booster" but it did nothing.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Improved picture and extra channels are a plus. Remote keypad is lame. I've called Digital Streams Cust Service twice, once to complete hook-up and told my VCR had to be set to viewing channel 3 as well as selecting default channel 3 in VCR set-up.
Second Call was to find out how to view one TV channel while taping another. NO WAY TO DO IT.
And, how to use my VCR timer function. At first the DTX9900 was shutting down automatically after a few hours to save power. They showed me how to turn off that feature. But when my off VCR powers up to record at the set time, the VCR/TV selector has to be pushed which means there is no way while using the DTX9900 to use the timer on my VCR.
These are two very serious fkaws with the converter no one seems to talk about.

Put two in my 5th wheel camper we have parked at a seasonal site and so far they work great. Easy to set up and program remote so I do not have to use two remotes. I am picking up about 17 channesls now instead of 7. I do not always get in a couple that have weak signals from distant cities bot my local channels are much clearer now and look a lot better. Sound is fine and remote easy to use and has more features than the TV remote had. Cost me [$] each out of pocket after using my [$]off coupons. My parents put a cheaper box in their camper and they are not happy at all. They could not adjust screen size to make picture fit their TV. My digital stream has several screen size options to allow you to fit the picture to your TV so it dosent look like you are watching a shrunk down wide screen show all the time.

Poor reception in the high 50s channels. You need to check which digital stations are transmitting in that range. In Raleigh channel 4,17,22 digital are currently broadcasting on 59,55,57, respectively, but they will be moving to 25,17,27, respectively, after 2/2009, so hopefully it will be a non-issue then.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I bought this converter using the $40 government coupon. I can say that I really like the converter, and for the price, I don't think you can go wrong. I purchased this converter mainly because it has the Dolby Digital receiver. Many of the other converters like the Zenith and Maganavox converters don't have this features, and I question their quality. I hate RCA products with a passion, and Zenith is not much better when it comes to quality. The receiver pretty much does everything I want it to do. I do wish that the receiver had a timer included where you can set the receiver to switch to a particular channel at a certain time. This makes the receiver pretty much useless if you connect it to your DVD recorder, DVR, or VCR and want to record more than one program on a particular day at different times. If not for the lack of a built-in timer, the receiver would be near perfect. I like the signal strength meter. If you buy this or any other DTV receiver or HDTV, a good antenna is a must. I live within about 5 miles of several TV stations, and I can tell you that most of the indoor antennas won't cut it. Your best bet is to use a good antenna either outside on a rotor, or in the attic, preferably also with a rotor. Digital is a different beast than analog. Digital is an all-or-nothing proposition, and rabbit ears may or may not work. I have found that if the signal is not consistantly in the green on the meter, the pictures will eventually become choppy. Bottom line, get a good antenna, and put it up as high as possible and enjoy excellent picture and sound quality.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I went to radio shack to get the zenith but they only had one and my father wanted it so i bought this one . After setting up the zenith at my fathers I was impressed with the picture and stuff but noticed alot of the mp3 hiss that others have said came through. My father has a big 16:9 tv and we had to play with certain zoom features on the box and tv because it was cutting the sides off but after messing with it we figured it out. So any who got home set this digital stream up and was surprised how better it was with controls and features than the zenith was. Remote is easier to use . Be prepared to buy a splitter to get your old channels my father couldnt get any abc channels any way we turned the rotor . The rescanning after turning the rotor is a bummer but both have that problem. Was surprised how touchy the the tuner is like for instance I live 35 miles south of youngstown and 60 miles west of pittsburgh and i always watched pitts. because of youngs. channels had bad shadows and now if i turned my rotor half an inch north I lose the pitts. channels and gain youngstown would be awesome to get both but i guess that i would have to put up another antenna or something . I have the biggest antenna radio shack sold with a preamp booster and its 45 ft up. The only problem i have is the audio out. I have it hooked via rca cables with monster cable mid grade cables. When i turned the audio prefered out to line the sounds drops alot and i notice alot of the mp3 hiss but when i put it on 3/4 channel out it sounds geat no hiss. Still seems to be in stereo to. A bit wierd if you ask me. I wrote such a long review to answer some some of the questions i had when i was looking at which one of these to buy and i think this is the better purchase. Oh yeah if you don't have a good antenna set up don't bother with any brand my brother lives beside me with a middle size antenna about 5 ft off of his chimney and can't pick up any station clear and none with the converter.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The on screen set up was a breeze to follow.
Have manual rabbit ears. Would suggest if you do not have patience then invest in an ac adapter antenna
as it took me countless moving of the antenna to finally get the strongest signal.
But it was worth it. The picture is just a sharp and clear as any cable set up I have had in the past.

This product has been surprisingly good. The picture quality is gorgeous! If you're paying money for basic analog cable with it's nasty “snowy” picture you'll be happily surprised. I did need to return my first unit though, had a problem of freezing up on a particular channel. IMPORTANT: if you're any distance from the transmitters in downtown Chicago you'll need a good antenna (I'm 26 miles from downtown). Rabbit ears don't cut it. This unit is not able to control our Sylvania television. Therefore, even though it comes with a "universal" remote, we still need to use our TV remote just to turn the TV on and off. The manufacturer should have provided a list of compatible televisions so the consumer is able to know this in advance. Also, unless the volume is relatively low, there is a slight hiss. The unit does not come with AV cables, as some of the other brands do. On the plus side, it's very easy to set up, the picture is great, the on-screen programming information is helpful.

Repeated the above for 2nd TV.
Read the instructions.
No problems.

I decide to try and use rabbet ears to see how this unit would preform. After turning on the unit I selected auto program. In a few minutes it was done. I was impressed at the picture quality. It is easy to use. You will not be disappointed with this unit.

Dropped Direct TV a couple yrs. ago, to much $$$!
Had to settle for analog & 75 ohm amp. I got got 7 channels well, and 2 snowy. Made the big switch and now get 8 regular channels and 11 sub-channels! Def. get an outdoor antenna & amp. in fact, the directions recomend it. (Wind swept trees can affect your signal.)

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Purchased two units. Both TV's used rabbit ear antennas and had excellent analog signal performance. Adding these digital units was a performance disappointment. Both TV's no longer received all the stations in the Cincinnati area. Channel 9, 64, 54 and 48 were weak to impossible with the digital units but just fine on the old analog signal. [...] The antenna doesn't know or care about the type of modulation used on the RF carrier. [...] both units would lock-up right in the middle of a program. You could not turn the unit off or on, could not change channels or volume. Al controls would lock-up. Disconnecting the power plug for a few minutes would successfully reset the unit and the controls worked again.Over all, very disappointed and I returned both units.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I have mine hooked up to a Terk TV-1 and I am getting most of the stations that I did on analog with no problems. Problem channels are Fox and UNC-ETV (which is not a big deal considering I live in SC). Even with an outdoor antenna at a neighbor's house Fox would still not come in (usually hovers in the 15-25 signal strength range). The major issue for me is that any program that is broadcast with DD (Dolby Digital) sound causes clipped "s" sounds in the left channel. While most things are still intelligible the quasi-chirping that this problem creates is annoying and makes music sound horrible (especially cymbals). For non-DD programs the audio is fine. I actually have resorted to a male RCA to 2-female RCA Y adapter plugged into the right output on the Digital Stream to bypass the chirping on DD broadcasts. This issue seems to be common to several DTV boxes; hopefully the manufacturers will cover problems like this under warranty.Other than the above issues the box functions fine, although with somewhat clunky menu/EPG navigation. Not being able to enter channel numbers while the Info screen is displayed is also somewhat annoying.I will probably be looking for another DTV box to use my second coupon on. [...]

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I've had no problems with this converter. I live in the San Francisco bay area and this thing tunes all the channels, even some that are farther away with just a basic rabbit ear antenna. Setup was a snap, and the device is easy to use. The only cons would be that some of the buttons on the remote are rather small. On the other hand a plus is that you can control the sound volume with the converter remote (nice if you want to hook up the sound outputs to a stereo amp that doesn't have a remote control). Also you may have to press the zoom button several times to get the best aspect ratio for the program you are watching, but this has to do with DTV in general not this specific converter.

I live under a transmission tower about a block
north my apartment. I finally can channels that
used to be hard to receive in analog mode.
I used one of special indoor antenna also from the store
connected to the box. Nothing special.
The only glitch came when I was searching for channels on the initial setup. I had to reboot.
After that it cake. It receives channels 2-69
which is fine for most locales.
Not all the stations are in digital yet. But come 2009 watch out!

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Great little converter! Picks up all of the local TV stations plus the alternate channels that the local stations transmit throughout the day. Here in the NYC area that means extra weather-only and lifestyle channels. For light cable TV subscribers, this box could convince you to ditch cable completely and just stick to the digital local channels. The digital signals carry the program information available with the INFO button on cable systems, which is a cool feature.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Converter looks nice. Has a full as well as a fast "plug and play" setup guidelines. After plugging it in, I got at least twice as many channels and with really good quality! After reading usage instruction I've found such a nice DTV features as EPG (electronic program guide), channel info - to be very useful and easily accessible by clicking just one button on ergonomic remote. Together with favorite channels (also 1 button), channels configuration and rating restrictions under a password (pin) - very nice addition to the tv. You can now choose which format (width:height) to pick up depend on what screen your tv has (regular, wide, ...)
You will need to buy optional cable to hear stereo or dolby surround sound.
Signal power statusbar is good, however I found it easier to get the best quality in the analog mode (without converter box), and then not changing antenna position switched to a dtv mode (plug in converter box)
If you were using analog tv before, you'll feel dtv difference.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The converter is not hard to hook up. I decided to try this one because I could not find any location that had the RCA DTA800B in stock. I'll get one of those later.
The DTX9900 has composite video and audio outputs (RCA jacks). 1 video & 2 audio jacks. RF output can be set for ch 3 or 4. The remote requires and comes with two AAA batteries. There is a short 2' coax cable included in the box along with the converter box manual/guide.
The converter universal remote is fairly simple to program for most major brands of TV. With the TV on, hold down the "TV" power button on the converter remote, then use the up/down arrows until the tv turns off and means the tv remote is set for your tv.
The problem lies in the fact that the once connected, the box has no signal bypass. In other words, if you hook it up between your VCR and your TV for the last remaining months of analog broadcasting, your VCR cannot pass a signal through the converter to the tv via the coaxial cable connection. You would have to use your VCR's composite video/audio connections for that.
The remote has a button that will switch to your tv's composite video input if your tv is setup for that function on its own remote. My tv is setup for Video 1, Video 2, and Video 3.
I hooked my new converter up between my VCR and tv so my vcr could still record using it's analog tuner for the time remaining before February 2009. However, the converter will not pass the playback RF signal through to the tv. I would have to use the composite video connections between the vcr and tv bypassing the converter box entirely.
So once the box is connected, you are totally reliant on the converter box tuner for all your tv channels.
I can receive all the local Chicago digitial channels here in NW Indiana some 35 miles away across Lake Michigan. Only a weak Chicago UHF station, ch23, eludes the converter box channel scan.
The pictures are on my 32" standard stereo tv are good for 480i, but channel 2 (CBS) being the weakest signal being broadcast has a few glitches from signal fluctuation. The audio drops sporatcially and the image pixelates for a moment or two. It can be a little annoying if it happens too often.
I have a large long range outdoor antenna, a Radio Shack VU-190, 25 feet in the air that I've been using for a number of years and have several tv outlets in my home hooked to the main tv feed from the antenna through a powered distribution amplifier to boost the signal a bit further.
The menu languages supported by the converter are enlgish, spanish, and french. It supports most close captioning types.
The programming guide is a bit limited showing only whats on the current channel. To see more channels you have to change to that channel.
The box has a on screen signal meter which will help in zeroing in your antenna on the best signal, although the signal can vary from channel to channel. The signal on my problem channel, ch2, can go from 90 out of 100 down to 45 in a few moments then back again.
The autoscan function has a full scan or a update function. A full scan erases anything you have previously scanned. A update scan will remember what you have and add anything new it finds.
Another drawback of this box is that you cannot manually add any new channels. You have to either rescan or update scan and if the box doesn't find it you are out of luck. You cannot actually delete a channel, but you can disable a channel from the channel editor. A disabled channel will just be skipped over when you flip through your channel selections.
The remote has seperate converter box volume and will also control the volume of your tv, provided the remote supports your tv.
The box also has parental lockouts and can be protected by a PIN number you select.
You can add your favorite channels to a favorite list and use the "FAV" button to scroll through just those channels.
The program info button will display a description of the program, the channel, if the program is in dolby stereo, a second language (SAP), close captioned, and has a signal strength meter.
The menu can be be slightly adjusted to make the background somewhat transparent. You have a choice of 60%, 80% or 100% (solid).
You can bounce back and forth between two channels using the PREV or BACK buttons on the remote.
I thought the buttons on the remote were a bit touchy. If you held a channel number button a bit too long while going to channel "5", for example, you would get "555". It's not a big problem just a minor annoyance.
Pro:
Easy setup
programming guide
tv power and volume control for supported brands
favorite channel list
signal meter
channel info button (displays program info)
remote has button for composite video input control for tv if tv is so equipped.
channel return function via PREV and BACK buttons.
works well with outdoor antenna (indoor antenna not tried.)
Con:
No signal passthrough
No real channel delete/add (only disable) function
Remote buttons seem a little bit "touchy."
Conclusion, it looks like a good value for the money with features some of the others don't have. It probably works best with an outdoor or amplified antenna, although I have not tried it with a indoor antenna. Digital Stream needs to add a manual delete and add function to the channel editor button. The unit needs to allow signal passthrough when not in use as the main tuner so other devices can send their signals through the box to the tv. As it is now you'll have to hook the box in ahead of your game console, vcr and dvd player, but then you are stuck recording only what the box is set for.
Hopefully, models yet to come with iron out some of these deficiencies.

As noted by another reviewer, this unit shuts off after a few hours when not in use. This makes it useless for recording programs on a DVR or VCR. By the time the show comes on, the unit has shut off and you're recording static. Buy this unit only if you'll be sitting there the whole time!

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Setup was quick and easy. I was up and running within 5 minutes. The initial scan only picked up 3 channels, but that was because I was running the antenna connection through the VCR first. Once I connected the antenna directly and repeated the scan , all channels appeared. I set up a splitter from the antenna to direct the signal to the VCR and converter and then hooked the output from them to an A/B switch. There was a slight signal loss in this setup, but the signal strength stayed in the green for all channels. Great product!!

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Overall I am happy with the improved picture that I have gotten with the Digital Stream product. But, the station I used to get the best, Fox, is now my weakest station, and often puts out "no signal." But, like any digital picture, you get the occasional digital stutter where it skips words, the actors' mouths don't move while the sounds are coming out, the screen blinks a lot, etc. I gained five channels, but lost NBC. Also, the sound must be turned all the way up to almost maximum in order to hear. I might try a different brand for my second box.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
In the Cincinnati area most stores sell the cheapest DTV converter boxes they can get. This one is $10 more than wal-mart and best-buy, but it is well worth the extra money. The unit comes with batteries for the universal remote, and it includes the RF cable. The TV universal remote is easy to set up, you don't need to enter any codes. Additionally, the manual include a set of codes for each of the buttons on the remote. This will allow folks who own high-end universal remotes to program the converter box as an "Aux" device.
I'm extremely happy with all the features, but have two minor issues. The auto-channel program missed a station the first time through. The 'Update' option allowed channels with sufficient signal strength to be added automatically, but I could not force a low signal strength channel into the list. This is minor, after all, low signal strength means the picture will freeze all the time.
The closed captioning is easy to use, its just a button on the remote. The menu indicates that features of the CC text can be changed, such as size, color and transparency. I have not gotten that to work. It is always opaque white text with a black background. This is also a minor issue.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
After reading all the reviews, I was a little sceptical. But no other model is currently available in our area, so I bought just one to try it. Setup was pretty straight forward. Can be programmed for multiple shutdown times, has a signal strength meter which helps adjusting your antenna. I am using a large antenna thirty feet in the air and am approximately fifty miles from closest station. We are currently getting about three times as many stations as before. Set your TV audio up pretty high and use the converter to adjust to your liking. Simply set your TV on channel 3 or 4 and turn your convert on, scan for channels and adjust to please. I have seen where some fault the converter because there is a slight delay when the channel is changed. But since I'm watching TV and not driving a car at the time, what's the hurry. I installed our converter when my wife was gone. When she came in she commented on how clear it was several times that evening before I told her what I had done. I'm going back to buy a second one tomorrow. I don't see how anyone could be dissatisfied.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I like the Digital Stream DTV converter. I also bought the Zenith, but this one has a better electronic program guide which shows more program information. Unlike the Zenith, it shows information for shows more than one hour away. I was disappointed with the quality of weaker TV signals which I can watch okay with the analog signal and my rooftop antenna, but are un-watchable with digital. Owners of rooftop antennas may need to purchase a rotator or signal booster for weaker signals to work with DTV. Even stronger UHF signals get choppy when there is too much movement on the screen.

This box beats the Zenith (or Insignia as other retailers may call it) hands down. None of the issues I've had with other boxes are present with this box. Both box and TV volume control on the remote (this has been an issue even with higher end ones I've used), and the remote works quite well (not fighting with it to get the box to register). Worth the full retail cost, even better with the coupon! You won't get a better box for the price.

I live 1.5 miles from Sears Tower and can pick up 30 crisp clear channels using a rabbit ear antenna. Setup is easy. I simply connect the antenna coaxial cable to the converter, connect an audio/video cable (not included in package) from the converter to the TV, then turn on the TV and converter, and follow the on-screen setup wizard and scan for channels. I did not use the included RF cable. You will only need it if you have a really old TV with no RCA audio/video inputs.
The channels I can pick up are CBS 2.1, NBC 5.1, NBC Weather Plus 5.2, ABC 7.1/7.2, ABC Weather 7.3, WGN/CW 9.1/9.2, PBS WTTW 11.1/11.2/11.3/11.4, PBS WYCC 20.1/20.2/20.3, MeTV 23.1, WCIU 26.1, MeTV 26.2, MeToo 26.3, FBT 26.6, FOX 32.1, ION 38.1, ION qubo 38.2, ION Life 38.3, ION Worship 38.4, Telemundo 44.1, my50 50.1, TeleFutura 60.1, WJYS 62.1, and Univision 66.1. The remote control has a "Meter" button that tells you the signal strength of a channel. I get at least a 90 for most of the channels.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I am a video producer and I found this product to meet my expectations for conversion from digital to analog. I have a couple of TV's in my house that are connected to an antenna.
I know what a digital signal should look like and for most consumers, this product should meet all of their needs. The Tech-weenies out there should not be so critical of a product that was designed for the consumer who is happy with a good signal and a decent picture, not to mention a few extra channels.
It always amazes me when a tech-weenie spends a small amount of money and expects big buck results. This product delivers as advertised and I am happy with the cost/value of the product.
I recomment this converter box as of 5/5/08 as it is one of the better products on the market to date. I'm sure that as more time passes better boxes with more features will appear, but for now, this works pretty good.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The biggest problem I have with the Digital Stream converter is the audio. Some channels have a high pitched noise, like a low quality mp3. However, if that noise doesn’t bother you then this is a good product. The video quality is great with good options to zoom to be able to fit wide screen programming to your TV screen. Was very easy to setup and I like how fast the channels change, I have a USB digital tuner for my computer and the channels change more slowly.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Seemed easy to set up but it was unable to pull in a signal - kept getting "weak signal" message - went back to radio shack and purchased a $20 antenna - still got weak signal message. Called Digital Stream tech support - they told me I needed to use the remote to access the menu and tell the converter to "update" (basically, rescanning for channels - seems it was remembering the weak signal from the old antenna and does not automatically rescan for channels unless you program it to do so). Once this update was done - took only a minute or two - it works great. Very pleased.

Got it for my son's room, which doesn't have cable. He went from 3-4 snowy channels to 20+ (mostly PBS) clear video signals, 6 network, 4 local weather, CW, etc... Needed to find the optimum position of the rabbit ears, but other than that, it worked right out of the box. Only time will tell if the box holds up. It gets pretty hot if left on all the time. I have it turn off after 4 hours (a menu selection). People who pay cable companies just to receive a better local signal can cancel and use these.

Set this up in Orange,CA about 40 miles from TV transmitters in L.A. using rooftop antenna. Displayed output on 52 inch Mitsubishi LCD. Channel 3 RF output had edge artifacts but direct video/audio connection looked good. ATSC Sensitivity was about 3 dB worse than Mits TV -- Acceptable. Box has Cable setup choice, but no cable signals could be memorized. Remote could be programmed for TV power and volume control. Guide seemed to be limited to a few hours of the day, but did not leave it set up for longer time to see if guide filled in later. ATSC (digital TV) is definitely an improvement over NTSC (analog). OSD graphics very rough looking, but usable.

YOU FIND THE " PERFECT" SPOT OF RECEPTION. I HAD
TO ADD AN UHF BOWTIE ANTENNA TO MY TV'S RABBIT
EARS AND RECEPTION IMPROVED 90%. MOST DIGITAL STA-
TIONS TRANSMITTERS ARE UHF.IF YOUR TV HAS RCA AUDIO VIDEO INPUTS; USE THEM !!!. THE PICTURE AND
AUDIO WILL BE EVEN BETTER !!!

I'm very pleased with this product. The signal strength meter assists in positioning the antenna.
The dual volume control and power on/off lets me do everything with one remote for my Magnavox TV.
The picture quality is very impressive. Before I had maybe 1/2 dozen some what snowy channels on the rabbit ears and now I get around 20 clear channels with the same antenna. Channel 2 CBS is the weakest, and channel 36 ION went away, but now I can learn Spanish, Japanese & German from the new channels. I live about 35 miles from downtown Chicago.
I screwed up the initial set up and had no picture. The menues required a little bit of getting used to. The left / right, up / down took some practice. I kept exiting the menues prematurely, but eventually got the hang of it.
I'm using the single wire from the box to the TV.
and there is a small sound humm. To minamize the humm I turned the volume down on the TV and up on the converter. The only time I notice the humm is when the TV is muted.

If you just have a TV, and want digital...it works.
You can even turn a monitor with AV inputs into a digital TV!(did this with a mac lcd monitor)
Be careful if you have a stack of non-digital components though. I tried running the antenna out of both my Vhs AND my dvd recorder to the "Antenna In" on the box, and it refused to pass the analog signal. It is DIGITAL ONLY...
Do yourself a favor... if you're buying this, and still have old equipment to match your old tv... get an AV selector.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Easy to install and setup. It took me about 20 minutes from start to finish which included freeing up an electical outlet to plug it into and setting up the remote control for use with my TV set. I spent about another 10 minutes going thru the setup menu's. On a standard home outdoor antenna I received 30 DTV channels with only one having a weak signal. The picture and sound quality is very good. The remote control buttons are nicely arranged and easy to use. With the $40 coupon from Uncle Sam this unit is a steal.

I hooked this unit up and it fails to receive two major channels in the Jacksonville, Florida area.
NBC(Channel 12) and ABC(channel 25).It said "No Program" for these two channels which is pretty dang amazing since my HDTV receives them just fine.I hooked this unit to the same antenna as my HDTV uses and the unit received nothing on the aforementioned channels. I am returning it to Radio Shack to see if they will exchange it for the Zeinth unit. Once you use the card thats it, you cant use it again. On the bright side, the universal remote worked well, but be warned it doesn't work with all brands of Tv's,the set up was pretty easy, the picture was clear, and you must have an outdoor antenna with this unit.
I had the same problem with another brand from a major retailer regarding channels 12 and 25.I am only about 15 miles from all the Tv broadcasting towers and for some reason the HDTV gets the channels and so far two different converter boxes wont receive them.

Bought both Digital Stream and Zeinith. 12 miles from Fairbanks along Badger. Using 2 pair rabbit ears with combiner. Analog only needed 1. DS gets abc and CW. Zeinith gets better reception. #2 abc, Cw, PBS. No Fox, 11 or 13 NO analog pass through on either box, further research shows that Digital Stream DSP7700T does have pass through. Will be returning both products. Will buy an antena and buy DSP 7700T.
Zeinith shows the tv guide for all channels for each time period, while DS gives several hours you have to change channels to see what will be on each channel. I liked the Zeinith best for this, however the DS has the possibility of tv volume control in addion to the converter box volume.
If volume on tv is turned to high and the converter volume is used the tv has a high pitched whine.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Purchased this model at RadioShack after [...] ran out of Magnavox models. Glad I did. The Digital Stream is made by Dolby labs & uses their DT decoder savvy. An easy set-up is optional for use without cutting in to your cable. (If you do not have a line-in or game or AV port option, then buy a cheap cable splitter.) Just use the RCA (RWY) ports on the back and plug them in to your older TV set's AV or Line-in or GAME ports. The remote can be synched for your TV; allowing you to switch back and forth between cable and DTV-open air transmissions (or between DTV & analgor broadcasts when not using cable or satellite). In Western Mass, I receive 11 DTV channels which subdivide into about 6-8 more) so that's a starting 17.An ordinary dollar store uhf-vhf rabbit-ears antenna brings all of them in, in every likely TV viewing room of the house (pre-set with cable) including the basement -- all with quality stereo sound & ghost or color fade free broadcasts. The DTV receiver in the converter will not display an exceptionally weak signal -- so quality is there or there is no picture or sound. If your old set is monaural -- then stereo savvy folks know how to receive stereo and relay it beyond the TV's picture reception -- just like a stereo VCR or DVD player and a monaural TV receiver/monitor. Split the plugs at their ports for audio & video & run a line to satellite speakers or a stereo players sound-in jack [AUX].If new to DTV, it performs like your cable Digital receiver; your old TV will display Program Information; & the EPG on the remote control is the TV guide for that channel. On HDTV, it will zoom to the center; go to 16:9, or 14:9, or anamorphic screen image. On DTV which is not HD, those features are not available.Subtitles can be displayed now on your old analgo TV even if not a feature on the old set. The Dolby Digital Stream is smaller than the Magnavox by almost a third; and uses 7 watts max when on; the remote uses 2 AAA batteries. For the rebate reduced price cost it's a best buy.

I started using this box in Downtown Seattle. The moment I plugged it in and was walked throught the set-up by the box I got 5x more channels than with analog. I love it!!
I also bought a Zenith one but don't like that one as much. The Digital Stream is easier to use, smaller, and the remote is more comfortable in your hand. I am returning my Zenith for a Digital Stream.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I like this product, from box to TV in 5 mins and I was up and running, didn't even look at instructions. Good reception with rabit ears, 15 miles from broadcast towers. WORD OF WARNING-maybe this is just a defect on my box only BUT, when i first turned on and used device, it could NOT tune in to more than 2 of the 15 stations around me. I had the box sitting on a DVD player that was turned OFF. Through experimentation, I discovered that if I had the box away from other electric devices, reception strength tripled. move closer, then signal loss, down to 2 strong stations. This had NOTHING to do with antenna position. I can live with this though.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Picture looks great, or doesn't display at all. The audio might be fine if you have a television only, but if you have a surround system, it's horrible! If you want to sacrifice your $1000.00 audio equipment, buy this. If you're like me and don't buy another brand.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
It is a great unit when added to an amplified antenna. I actually gained six channels, with three PBS stations. The greatest thing about digital video is NO FUZZ. The signal strength indicator is a great help to find the greatest signal peak. Finally, I can watch The Price is Right without worrying about getting a good signal!
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Most people are thinking that they will get the same reception as they have with analog. They need to understand how digital signal works. It doesn't travel quite as far is more likely to have reception be cut down by trees, buildings, mountians, etc. You show have a directional strictly UHF (most digital broadcasts are in UHF) outdoor antenna to get the best reception, possibly with an amp if your cable run is longer than 75ft. This unit works well if you have a good outdoor UHF antenna. It is probably far from the best unit out there but it works like it is supposed to.

I had the digital convertal installed and operating in 10 minutes. I have rabbit ears and picked up all the stations that I was receiving plus added stations. The picture is clearer than ever, the remote control handles the on/off of TV, the volumn control and only have to use the remote that came with the converter. The TV that I have is over 20 years old and the rabbit ears are older than that and the product works great with them.

The Digital Stream DTX9900 is what you are looking for - easy to set up, easy to use, and provides very good reception with an indoor antenna placed near a window. I live in Niagara Falls, NY, and I pick up the digital versions of WGRZ (NBC), WIVB (CBS), WKBW (ABC), WNED (PBS), WNLO (The CW), WUTV (Fox), and WNYO (MyTV). I'm quite happy with this product.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Gets Channel 3 (CBS, 30 (NBC) and 61 (Fox). Does not receive Channels 8 or 40 (ABC), nor 24 (CPTV) even though I received 24 well and 40 fair with analogue TV. So my 5 stations are now reduced to 3. It also received a new station 46 (Spanish) All the above with amplified rabbit ear antenna. I will look elsewhere to see what other brands do, before giving up on channels 8, 24 and 40

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Bought this after reading reviews all over the place. [...]I used to get 15 channels in Chicago, rooftop antenna; some had some snow, others were perfect. When I put this in I ended up with only 3. I even tried rabbit ears to get more channels. What I found interesting during the scan was that the digital stations were found in a totally different RF area (eg, channel 5 stations were in the 20's). 32 (FOX) was fuzzy before, and now is sharp. channel 7 (ABC) was perfect and is now gone. So I have this now plugged into my LINE input of the tv, and if I cannot get a signal, I flip back to the regular tuner (analog) of the tv to get the stations I want. Of course this will go away next year. Also, the sound seemed tinny on my stereo tv.Some channels had a split second time delay on audio, or dropped the sound for a second, which is very annoying. Some nice features:-the remote can replace my tv's remote.-the setup allows for updating stations, not having to delete/replace them with each scan.- There is a "zoom" button on the remote which quickly lets me change the aspect ratio of the picture as necessary.Overall I think this is as good as it can get, for this price.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Does a great job bringing a digital signal into a 10 year old Philips Magnavox TV. We have an old aerial antenna (unamplified) up in our attic. Plugged the antenna coax into this converter box, connected another coax from the box to the tv, turned it on, let it scan for channels and boom! we were off and running. Pulls in everything that we used to get from DC and half the channels from Baltimore plus a few extras. The coolest is that most of the DC stations have multiple subchannels which all come in crystal clear. Closed captioning is also faster. A very simple, straight forward product. Its universal remote was a nice touch too.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Once you get your antenna positioned properly (near a window is best), this box does a good job in pulling in medium to high strength digital signals. Here in Niagara Falls, New York, I'm getting WGRZ (both channels), WIVB, WKBW (all three channels), WNED (all three channels), WUTV (both channels), WNLO (both channels), and WNYB (both channels).
Unfortunately, at this time, people in my neck of the woods won't be able to pick up Canadian digital stations (signals are just too weak, and Canadian stations won't have much reason to put out a strong digital signal until the middle of 2011 when Canada does it's digital switch).
Getting back to the box itself, it is easy to set up, and easy to use. The remote that is included is very good, and only takes a few minutes to master.
You'll like this box - give it a try.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This has worked great for me. Generally, I couldn't get channel 2 (CBS)in Chicago to come in very clearly at all(analog broadcast). But with the converter, I get all the local digital channels including 2.1 (CBS).
HOWEVER, in my previous analog attempts to get channel 2, I ended up with an assortment of antennas. The ONLY one which finds 2.1 (CBS)digital is a cheap dipole antenna I got from Radioshack several years ago. With it, this box gets all the local digital channels. I can even watch CBS. Several other -- more expensive -- antennas I have give a higher signal strength for most other channels, but get almost no signal strength for channel 2.
I have one problem, I threw away the directions and changed the batteries for the remote. Now, I don't remember how to set the universal remote to recognize my tv. But it still works with the converter box.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Connection of the hardware was straight forward.
Box offers easy to understand, step by step, auto setup.
I was pleased (and surprised) that the unit offered a signal meter. I am about 40 miles from most of the broadcast stations. The auto-setup found all of the current digital broadcasts in my area. With the signal meter, I was able to assure myself of the proper orientation of my rooftop antenna for the most consistent viewing.
My wife (who didn't know I'd setup the box) commented immediately about how much better the picture was.
Good job Radio Shack!
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Set up was easy, but could not believe NBC cannot come in, nor does several other channels that were fine as analog, for example, WWOR, Ch 9, ch 13 or 21 (pbs stations). Reception for the few channels that came in was good. My choices were down to 3 stations, CBS, Fox 5 and ABC.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
It shows in the manual that it will scan channels that are passed from cable company. Set the scan for cable instead of air and no channels. Cable works perfect on my tv but the converter box doesn't store any. Time to go back to Radio Shack!! I rated it not good because it doesn't do what it states. It may be fine for antenna signals.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Very easy to setup. Took maybe ten minutes to get to the point of watching tv. It does pretty decent job of improving video and sound quality. Keep in mind, you'll pick up more channels and improve signal strength with an outdoor type antenna. Overall, I'm very impressed with this little box.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I originally bought an Insignia converter from Best Buy and had nothing but problems with it. After returning that and purchasing the Digital Stream DXT990, what a difference!! I can control my TV with this remote, no black lines on the sides of any channels, and the volume doesn't give me annoying static - which is what I had issues with the Insignia. Very easy to hook up and a lot more features with this converter. I would definitely recommend this one over the Insignia from Best Buy.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The DTX9900 has great reception, easy to setup, and excellent video quality but it suffers from poor audio. The left stereo channel on some stations has a very high pitched and very annoying "chirping" artifact that has also been reported by a number of other users of this model as well as other brands that use the same chipset. However, this audio problem may not be detectable if you have a mono TV or low quality sound system. Also, some other channels have audio that is excessively tinny and of less quality than the old analog.
Given that the audio is unbearably annoying I will be returning this unit.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Quick to setup. Got all channels plus a load more on our primary TV. Our secondary TV lost PBS but gained other channels.
Clarity is fantastic, like night and day. Uncompressed broadcast DTV is really great!! The secondary channels the major broadcasters put out are very useful, for example our channel 2 puts out constant weather on its secondary channel, no more waiting for the weather forecast!!
The remote controls TV very well, also allows you to switch inputs to DVD, VCR etc etc so you can store away the TV's remote altogether. One thing bugs me. If I lose this remote, I'm not sure I could replace it because it has non standard buttons to program the unit and get electronic program guide. BTW the electronic program guide is a wonderful feature, makes my rabbit ear TV look like I have expensive cable or dish without the cost!!
One needs a good antenna if signals are weak. Digital either works fantastic or doesn't work at all, it doesn't degrade gracefully like good 'ole analog.
Regular rabbit ears work well, one can always buy a $15 signal booster if the signal is marginal.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Used to have 6 channels, several needed adjusting of rabbit ears.
Now have 13 channels! (had no idea PBS has 5 different channels... and 7's weather channel, 24/7!)
So glad I read these reviews and chose this box, we ended up with picture clarity akin to cable, programming guide, signal strength meter... oh could put this in 'cons', but it's too trivial in my life... the remote won't turn my JVC off/on.
I put the remote on top of the TV whenever it's off, so I'll just hit the tv's on/off button (how archaic, eh?!)

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I have been using a Digital Stream high-definition DTV tuner in our home theatre for over a year so I was familiar with the nameplate and more or less knew what to expect in features and quality (straight-forward without unnecessary bells and whistles). The DTX9900 is like a junior version of the HDTV model. It performs well and does what it is intended to do: to let 20-year-old Magnavoxes receive over-the-air digital TV signals.
You will get satisfaction from this device assuming your expectations are aligned with reality:
o It will NOT operate with cable. Digital cable and OTA TV use different modulation technologies and they are not compatible.
o It will NOT operate with your VCR, unless you plug it into your VCR and set the recorder to channel 3. There's no timer on the converter and you cannot record one channel while watching another.
o You WILL need a good antenna. There is no such thing as fringe reception with DTV, and DTV is hyper sensitive to doppler, ghosting and selective fading effects. If you don't have a solid S-9 signal you probably won't receive anything with this or ANY DTV receiver.
o This is NOT a high-def converter -- though your picture quality will be better than with analog TV.
o There is no pass-thru of analog signals when the converter is switched off, so you will need a splitter, switch, or use the converter's composite A/V outputs into a TV equipped with auxiliary input.
Setup and operation is very simple. I bot two of these and set them up on 20-year-old RCA and 10-year-old Zenith televisions in minutes with no difficulties. The resulting video is excellent. The universal remote included with the converter operates both TV's on-off and volume controls (but not both at the same time) and is easy to use.
Overall I would recommed this unit and would buy another myself.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Just got the converter... was waiting for the Zeneth. but wanted to see what this would do since I didnt really read much on the differences.
I set it up rather easily. Cable in cable out then simply ran the scan for channels..
If I am supposed to do something else.. erum I didnt.. with how simple I did it.. I went from basic static rabbit ear reception with 4 channels to crisp and clear 15 channels..
I think I might try upgrading my antenna and see what difference there is.. I figure if there isnt any difference I could always return the antenna that I bought to upgrade...
NOTE** the building tv is in .. is a BRICK building.. close to a window tho.. but not on a hill . simple location. I didnt realise there was so many OPB stations.. woa..

No analog pass-thru. Does not work out of the box. Could pickup no stations in KC area using rabbit ears.
Radio Shack replaced it for me with the same model from their stock. Only model RS sells. They should reconsider this deception in order to save their reputation.
They reboxed my returned converter and was placing it back on the shelf for resale as I left the store. Good luck to whomever purchases it next.
Go buy the Zenith.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
After doing research and hesitating buying a converter versus buying new TV, I am so happy with this one. Just installed and ready to use in under 10 min with no special knowledge or skills needed. No entering a bunch of codes to get remote to work with TV.No setting screen dimensions. Definitely will buy second unit of same. Finally, a product designed to plug in and go, with programing of remote for TV set, hold one button down, and push another repeatedly until TV shuts off. It doesn't get any easier. I am so impressed and I am a service technician who is working on my Electrical Engineering degree, and usually not easy to impress, but this simple little box made my day. Getting more channels, and crystal clear when before most were fuzzy.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This may be a good product if you live in town but I live out in the country and it didn't work very good at all. It did not get much signal at all, only in the red. It got some channels that I didn't have before but none of the news channels. The channels that it did get were great, very good picture but what is the point if you can't see the news and weather. I think I'm going to take mine back and get my[$] and just let them have the $40 from the gov. In 2009 I'll be going with satellite
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:

This converter was great out of the box. I had to adjust my rabbit ears a bit then scanned and found all my local channels. It took me to the next day to get the dvd/vcr combo set up as there were no directions for connecting them(I went, antenna->converter>dvd/vcr->tv) only problem is I can only tape what I am watching.
Even get more channels now like 24hour weather and religion and extra local channels.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The Digital Stream did not do the job. I'm in a metro area with good analog coverage. The Digital Stream would not tune in channel 5 (FOX TV), even though it showed good signal strength. I finally bought a different brand which worked for all the channels.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Easy setup, remote worked with my Toshiba TV. Great picture, sound OK, to GOOD. I routed the RCA output from the DTV converter through my VCR and set it to LINE1 input, then the VCR coax goes to TV. Now I can record off air, and the picture shows up great on my TV. Sensitivity is good, signal strength for remote suburb is GREEN or about 86%. I use amplified rabbit ears, into my house distribution system. I havn't figured out how to do 5.1 Dolby yet!
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Could not program remote control. In Philadelphia area, only channels 17 and 29 came in clear. Prior to hooking up the converter, I could get channels 6, 10, 12,17, 29, 35, 57 and 65. Instructions were unclear. It only has a 6 month warranty, so if you do not use it until Feb 2009 snd it does not work, you are out of luck.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
When I first got it home all I could get was the [weak signal] error message. This is from an RV style antenna with an inline 7.5 db amplifier. I went back to Radio Shack and purchased the rectangular style indoor/outdoor antenna DA 5200, part # 15-2186 which was placed in the same promotion display as the convertor box. The antenna did not add much to the signal but the included 30 db inline amplifier did. I reconnected this to the RV antenna. While I got the same [weak signal] error message, when I sent the box channel searching it was able to provide 4 clear digital signals.
The antenna research site which RS sends you to from their website recommends I have a large, directional, amplified antenna for my street address so I guess the receiver in the box coupled with the line amplifier beats the odds. I will have to see if this is strong enough for the rainy and snowey weather later in the year.
It is hard to get out of the program mode, the user guide says to push OK but that switches the chosen setting to the one you do not want. Just leave the on screen menu in place until it times out and it will save your changes.
My next step will be to route the signal from the box via the RCA cables purchased separately to see how the digital stereo sound will work through my Yamaha stereo receiver.
I really have not plans to keep the analog TV I currently have but this seemed the least expensive way to find out if the digital signals cab be received at my house before purchasing a digital TV with a built in tuner. This box tells me I will be able to get these channels as long as I keep the in line amplifier hooked up.

Easy to install and set up. The remote control set up to operate the TV worked the first time and was very easy. I was able to get all but two stations, but I didn't expect to get all stations since they were not broadcasting in digital yet. Picture is as good as I expect with the TV I have. The only problem I have noticed so far is that it wipes out several AM radio stations on the nearby radio when this box is plugged in and turned off. The only way to listen to AM stations is to unplug the box. The converter's memory remained in tact when plugged back in.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Straightforward operation, great picture, and a decently intuitive menu. The one-click signal strength meter is a lifesaver when trying to position your antenna for optimum signal.
Speaking of antennas, you will need to get a DTV-specific antenna to take full advantage of this box. It manages OK with rabbit ears, but DTV in general requires a better signal to work - it doesn't degrade gracefully like analog. That's no fault of this box - it's just the nature of DTV.
Those used to watching a snowy picture of a distant station will have to get a better antenna. In return, they will be rewarded with great sound and picture.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Box's digital cable meter strength was zero, even though I have digital TVs that work without any problems.
Beware: If you get the box home and it doesn't work then RS will only refund the difference in price less the coupon. That means if the box is $60 the coupon is $40 then they'll only refund $20 pocketing the $40 for themselves.
BTW, even hooking this box up to an antenna the best I could get was a yellow signal strength. Granted the antenna was an indoor antenna, but the antenna is amplified and I previously used it with a digital recorder without any issues.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
If your using the coupon best to buy the Zenith converter box, better audio also picks up more stations. I live in the MD suburbs outside DC and have over the air programming with antenna. I normally receive the following stations: 4,5,7,9,11,13,20,22,24,26,32,45,50, 54, 55, 66
with the converter I receive: 4;4.1 weather, 5, 7,7.1 weather, 9, 9.1 weather,20,22,26.1;26.2;26.3 and 50. I will use the converter box for my wide screen Tv but otherwise I intend to buy new digital tv's for the rest of the house. After a few hours the converter box feels warm to the touch, not jazzed about that either. The zenith box is just a better product all the way around. Don't be fooled by the blue stream remote as a better product choice over Zenith. The Zenith remote is less flash but the thin design makes it easy to distinguish from your others.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I bought this brand based on reviews here and my local Radio Shack didn't have Zenith. My main TVs are on cable, I used the $40 gift cards for TVs using Rabbit Ears for our local VHF channel. Using a simple UHF loop on the upstairs TV usable channels are now great, weak channels are now gone. Kitchen TV now has one good channel and it is not the local one! I'll be investing in some better antennas. Electronic Program Guide is neat, but I wish I could change channels while in the menus.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This is a great converter box. I was nervous taking the leap and cashing in one of my government coupons on this but after reading several reviews I decided to run out to Radio Shack and pick one up. I am very pleasently surprised. Set up took about 5 minutes and that includes searching for channels and programming the universal remote to work with my TV! The audio and video quality are excellent. The menus are straightforward. It just plain works and works very well.
Here in Philadelphia I'm getting 25 channels. I predict that the number will increase after the DTV switch is official. I doubt I'll ever go back to cable again.

Have not had any success getting signal from 50 mile range.
There is not any information on how to install when you have both satelite and antenna feeds to the TV.
I have 11 analog stations that range from good to iffy and have not been able to get any of them.
I have an older Magnavox TV and could not get the remote to recognize it after two tries. My Dish Network remote works fine but lacks some of the features.
My next step is to get some "HELP" from Radio Shack and I can already hear everybody saying "good luck"

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Just hooked it up tonight. In Chicago, near SW. Reception was poor for some channels before, tolerable for some, great for none, but you get used to things.
I was worried about how to switch my antenna back and forth, do I need a splitter or switch to share connectors, how am I going to schedule TV shows to record (27" Toshiba ca. 1997 with built-in VCR).
As soon as I set this up none of that mattered. It's like having free cable. 3 times as many channels (you guys with new TVs have been able to watch these all along?) and absolutely every channel has perfect reception.
I was disappointed to see that both models RS carried only had mono sound out (My TV has Stereo and very good sound) but stopped by the store on my way home tonight anyways, just to double check-- and this model actually has stereo out (odd that the specs on the site don't reflect that). Or maybe it was a "silent" upgrade. I should probably confirm that it's truly stereo and not just mono distributed over two jacks.
The sound is a little hissy as others havs described, but I cranked up the bass and cut the treble on the TV to compensate.
Guess I still need some sort of switch to toggle between the box and the DVD player (glad the RCA connectors were already there).
Tip-- do not treat the TV out as an antenna pass through in addition to the composite connectors, it creates noise.
Oh yeah, I'm using the same old Antenna (non-powered) that I was using for the TV for the last 10 years-- I thought I'd have to buy a "digital ready" one but now I wonder if that really means anything.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
No reason to run out and buy a digital tv. Keep your analog TV's using this converter box. Easy to set it up. Works great. Nice functions with the remote too.
I hooked it up to a Daewoo TV. The universal remote that comes with this worked with the TV too. Once set up, it now controls the power, channels and volume.
I hooked up a Radio Shack Brand UHF/VHF/FM Indoor Antenna Model: 15-1868 | Catalog #: 15-1868 to the converter. And it works great. Nice picture on all the local stations. Even got a few extra channels.
Now I won't be spending my money on cable.
When leaving a review. Please leave your zip code in your review so others will know what works or doesn't in their area.
Bottom line. Get the coupons, get this box and you will be happy.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Was easy to set up by following the step by step sheet. It found stations on set up and was ready to go in a few minutes. Features EPG (8 hr), CC, Text, fav. channels and volume are all on the remote. Controls TV power, volume/mute. I needed a powered set top antenna to get the fringe stations with enough signal strength for a steady picture, "rabbit ears" work OK if your stations are close. There is a nice signal strength meter available from the remote to "tune" your antenna for maximum signal.
This box does not allow for analog pass thru, some do. My TV only has a single RF connector. My antenna comes into my VCR first then to the converter and on to the TV. The converter strips out the Ch 3-4 signal the VCR sends to the TV along with all analog/Low Power stations. You will have to do some connection wizardry to get it all to work without the pass thru feature if this is your situation.

[...] I used my coupons and got two.The initial setup wasn't very difficult, but myinitial attempt was on a 20 year old Magnavoxon main floor. There are a lot of trees around the house. Kept getting "weak signal". SoI went upstairs to my $59 13" Zenith TV and within seconds of setup, picked up 6 digital stations. But that was "it" only 6 stations and I get 10 via analog. Picture quality was very good but I think I'll continue with analog until I can get a better antenna (was using rabbit ears that came with TV).Remote shut off/on the TV, changed channels andvolume, so I can get away with using just one remote.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I purchased two of the DTX9900 using the government coupons. The purchase process was easy and just as advertised. No “bait and switch” for a more expensive item.
The connection was a breeze, set-up was easy, and the results were better than I had expected. Picture quality is tremendous, I get all the channels I use too, plus about 12 more. Before the box, I used an outdoor antenna with a motorized rotor that helped me zero in on weak stations, but even with that, there were several local stations that the reception was poor at best – but with the converter box, I can leave the antenna rotor in one direction and ALL the channels are crystal clear. The remote works easy and I love the on screen program info – good bye to confusing TV guide!
The only draw back is using a VCR/DVD recorder. The box sends only one channel at a time to the TV, VCR, or DVD; which means you can only record programs on the channel the box is set on. You cannot record a program on one channel and watch a different channel. Nor can you set up your recorder to record programs on several different channels – it will only record programs on the channel the box is set on.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I was unable to collect a digital signal from any of the three antennas which work for analog TV. The signal was still too weak when using a 7.5 db amplifier between the antenna and the box. The signals I get in analog are not the best but ghosting is the problem there is no snow in any of the network channels.
I will perhaps try the 30 db signal amplifer from Radio Shack and if that does not work, it will be "TV free for me!" Perhaps I will have t-shirts made.
Note: The 3 star rating is account I could not get a signal for a full test. The design and construction seem to be fine.

This unit was recommended by the Radio Shack associate. It is much smaller and contemporary looking than the zenith. The remote has a nice lay out. By the way, we also tried an indoor amplified antenna (GE brand). It picked up NO stations (weak signal). Our $3.97 clearanced RCA rabbit ears [...]picked up great! We live aprox. 25 miles from our area stations.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
A really good product. Price a bit steep but unit was only about $10 more than the least expensive model I could find and unit was in stock. Setup is a breeze and should take less than 15 minutes. Just plug it in, attach the antenna feeds and let it auto scan. Actually got a station I could not pull in on the analog system. Can not go wrong with this unit.

This one has an 8hr program guide, The Zenith does not.
After about the 20th try, I got the universal remote to work with my TV.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
First, the remote battery is wrapped in an almost invisible coat of plastic..so be sure to remove it. I made that comment because some reviews indicated that the system did not work. Set up is easy and it works just fine. If after following set up, the system says "no signal", then use your remote menu to find and execute the scan for HD channels. Beware that the unit only acquires HD channels, not both analogue and HD channels, and that's OK with me. I haven't figured out how to use it with a VCR connection, and the unit is only compatible with newer TV's with component/composite input jacks. For TV's that only have a cable (RF) input, then a component-to-RF converter (if any exist) is needed. If none exists, then I will be trashing several TV's come February 2009!!!
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The universal remote will not power on/off my tv's. I have a panasonic, quasar, and sansui. It will not work for either of them. The Zenith does. Does anyone know how I can get remote codes for these tv's or how I can get a universal remote for this?
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Remote must be programmed to make it converter box work. The first step in programming is the on-off function of the TV. This didn't work, and I couldn't get past this point. The remote refuses to be programmed, at least according to the printed instructions, which are somewhat vague. It's hard to believe that this remote won't work with a relatively new analog Toshiba television set. There seems to be no recourse offered to Tech Service.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The Digital Stream box seems to be an all around great unit. I've had the pleasure of using comparing this unit to the "Zenith" that seems to be the buzz of the DTV industry and frankly I have had better luck with the Digital Stream box working near perfect every time. I've read a lot of reviews giving this product "1 Star" because it "didn't work". Sadly with all electronics D.O.A.'s will happen. The Digital Stream is a great product and works very well. It is much smaller in physical size than the "Zenith" and conceals much easier. The remote control might look cheap, but honestly if you're looking for a $100 Remote Look & Feel, please replace it with the Harmony and get over it...! The remote packs a punch and has worked with all TV's I've thrown at it. The package includes a coax cable for easy installation. If you aren't happy because you didn't find a composite A/V cable included, you obviously have yet to buy a printer in the last 10 years. Given all of the testing I have performed, if you follow the directions (hint, download the ones linked to the RadioShack.COM Product Specs page) you will be very satisfied!
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Tried to get the Zenith DTT900, but all they had was this. It had a V-chip, which was something I wanted. Easy enough to set-up and configure. Was a little disappointed with tinny audio, but adjusted the TV volume up and box volume down and got that resolved. Picture quality is great on our 16 year old Magnavox. The quality is much more consistent between channels with digital signal vs analog. Amazingly, a station 70 miles away that was barely viewable via the analog signal is now as good as the stations four mies away. We do have a proper UHF antenna ($30) mounted outside which makes a huge difference. I am always surprised when people complain about "rabbit ears" not helping the signal. Unless you are close to the transmitter and the channel is between 2 and 14, rabbit ears normally won't make any difference. Buy a simple loop antenna or bow tie. There is a fundamental difference between VHF and UHF signals, getting the correct antenna makes all the difference in the world. A clip-on or set-top bow tie antenna can be had for less than or the same price as rabbit ears and work very well in most urban and close suburban settings. People shouldn't blame the converter when they aren't giving it a usable signal. Very nice box, easy to set up and the remote was easy to program to control the on/off and volume of our older TV. Nice product for the money. Having the extras like on-screen program schedules and the two additional PBS stations is super! Our local NBC and CBS affiliates offer full time weather on their "extra" stations which is nice as well.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Wow. I've been watching over the air TV for years (no cable) and have constantly fought with bad picture quality, having to adjust the antenna for each station, etc. even though I live about 10 miles from most of the towers. I wasn't expecting that much from digital TV. Let me just say that I am BLOWN AWAY by the picture quality after upgrading. Every channel comes in absolutely perfectly - no noise, no static, and no artifacts. Best of all, no antenna adjusting. The signal strength meter for each channel makes finding the best antenna orientation a snap. Setup was amazingly easy and I just cannot emphasize how amazingly improved the TV watching experience is. Kudos to the government and the broadcasters for bringing us all into the 21st century. Oh, and did I mention that you get extra channels?
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This box has more features than competing devices. Remote control of volume, channel, and closed captioning a big plus. Was missing an instruction guide (may be a problem only with mine) but outputs are pretty self-explanatory. Has decent reception in my fringe area but definitely needs a good antenna. However, all ATSC receivers in fringe areas benefit from a good directional antenna with an antenna-mounted preamplifier.

I fully realize that any cons I exspressed about this product are shared problem with all converter boxes. I found this box easy to install and use, would be amazed if anyone could not figure it out. Was was very surprised at the quality of picture I recieved when I cranked it up, wow! I have always had consideralbe problems pulling in the analog signal at my home but with the box hooked up to my hi tech bunny ears my signal is locked down tight. was going to go with another converter box and glad I did not it was worth the ten extra bucks. Time well tell if the DigitalStream's quality is as good as it seems to be from the first hook up. Nice job!

I compared to another brand at a different retailer and this DTX9900 is a joy to operate! It has a great menu system, better picture quality/fit, picked up more stations, and the remote is more comfortable and functional (also controls TV sound, TV on/off and A/V input source). Installation was easy. Finally, the picture quality now coming from my inside the house antenna - WOW!

Easy to install, good picture. The unit takes over all. Cannot program the VCR to record, cannot use the VCR's control's. I did hook the RF cable from the unit to the VCR Antenna In, and from the VCR to the TV. If anyone hows a different hook up let me know.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Hooked this unit up to a 15 in. Magnavox Tv for the bedroom. The Scan Update feature worked great when doing a 360 scan. You get the maximum amount of stations available in your area., Has a Universal remote also. Don't have to use TV remote. It programed easily to the Magnavox TV.
To all you future Converter Box buyers.
You need a GOOD outdoor Antenna for any Converter box to work properly, especialy in Rural areas. It doesn't matter what brand you buy, it just won't work well with Rabbit Ears.

Hooked this Converter up a few days ago, and it works great. It gets the same digital stations my 32 and 15 inch HDTV's. May not have good of a picture as my HDTV's, but this converter saved my 3 analog TV's from the scrap pile. One good feature is that it has "Scan up-date" where you can turn your antenna different directions and not lose previous scaned stations while scaning different directions for more. Plus the Universal Remote was easy to program.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
This is a very good box. Easy to use and set up and the picture and sound quality is very good if the broadcast towers are close to your location. It could not find a local station I can receive with analog. I tried two type of antennas but no luck. Stations 15 miles away were find but could not get a station 21 miles away. It is very sensitive to antenna direction and if not pointed exactly correct, stations 8 miles away fade in and out.
Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
We were skeptical about purchasing the digital converter box, but this is absolutely amazing! Not only is it easy to set up, but we get MORE channels and an amazing CLEAR picture using our regular rabbit ears.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
The on-screen menu functions of this box were amazing and the pictures delivered to the old set were excellent. The most important feature to me was the ability to rescan for stations without losing the stations already scanned the first or subsequent rescans. This allows, unlike many HDTV sets with ATSC/QUAM tuners, the use of an antenna rotor for stations in different directions without rescanning each time you change direction. Example: some Reading, PA area locations have reception from as many as five different directions; ie, Philadelphia, Lancaster-York, Lebanon-Harrisburg, Wilkesbarre-Scranton-Hazelton and the Alletown-Bethlehem areas.
The second most important feature, amongst the many and especially for rotator users, is the signal strength indicator. The only minus - unimportant to antenna users - was the cable tuning position will receive only ATSC RE-BROADCASTS from cable; ie. something COMCAST does not do as they use QUAM system formats only.
New features, currently not available on analog stations but with the digital are extra video programs, channel information and TV programming windows. Everything is on-screen remote operated and eay to learn and use.

Works great easy to setup. I am cheap and not on the cutting-edge. [...]well worth it. I added extra mileage to my analog TV. It is a great picture. The HDTV is so much better quality, and the EPG button on the remote tells you about up-coming shows, times, what the show is about, etc...Great info. I found extra channels I did not know about. I would recommend going to HDTV. [...]I went to the local Radio Shack and bought this unit. After about 25 mins I was watching HDTV, super easy to setup and follow the instructions. 1. Plug in ant in RF, 2. Out to TV (RF or composite)3. Turn TV to channel 3 or 4 depends on your area4. Turn on TV5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set your time zone, not the actual time :(6. Use the "auto-scan" which takes about 5 mins to find all of the channels, and presto! The picture quality is excellent. I should have done this a long time ago. However being in Denver I am not able to receive channel 6 PBS. I probably need to troubleshoot, other than that. Probably my weird not-normal system. Although I am a hard-core geek, this unit is a snap to install. You do not need to be a geek, the average person can setup, and start watching.Oh, there is no analog pass (so you may need to splitters etc), through most of the major networks are already on HDTV (they have to be by Feb 09), so just do the change over. I got a unit for my Dad.

We got this one with one of our government coupons. With its easy set up, we were able to pick up all the Columbus Ohio digital stations, including the CW one with its tower 35 miles away, all with a cheap set of rabbit ears. Only drawback---there's no analog passthrough for the low power/non digital stations. For these, you'd have to get an A-B switch to toggle back and forth----Our main analog PBS station is not a part of its digital channel, so we have to A-B the signal to pick this channel and 3 others up. But if you can muddle through this distraction, it is a great product and my wife and I are pleased with it otherwise.

Easy to set up, buttons on remote are kind of big, but the remote is colorful and it makes the buttons easy to find. The guy at the store I bought this at said that other people had problems. I had no problems, it picks up 95% of the over-the-air digital channels in the Bay area with a home-made antenna (a 2x4 with some coat hangers screwed to it. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWQhlmJTMzw). On fringe/low level signals, the unit hangs up -- can't power off or use the 'Menu' to reset. Has low RF sensitivity. Unit picked up 22 stations as opposed to Zenith which picked up 29 stations. All the coupon converter boxes work! I also purchased the Zenith version from RS. It works equally as well. Both are easy to hook up, both remotes are good. IMO the specs that were given to manufacturers for the coupon boxes are the same and were met! I was given a Magnavox converter box by my sister (who just purchased a new HDTV). It works just as well. Before you you purchase your converter box, do your homework if your looking for the best deal. I can receive all the Chicago, Milwaukee & Rockford stations clearly. Only problem versus analog reception is that (because of signal strength) with digital either you have the "station" or you have a black screen...no in between.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
[...]You do get what you paid for. The RCA model would not bring in a local station, even after trying on a couple different TV's. We even got on the roof and tried moving the antenna around and that didn't help; in fact, lost another local station doing that. So figured the box was either defective or something was wrong with the station's tower. So got the one from RadioShack. This one is a true winner for us. Not only did it not take nearly as long to find and store the signals, but it also captured the local station we were missing -- all without having to move the rooftop antenna. We'd like to get another one of these, but can't via the coupon program due to having used our 2 allotted coupons. Will be replacing the RCA model with the Magnavox model when they come in. But would much rather purchase another Digital Stream from RadioShack.[...] We have already recommended this product to our family/friends. The best feature is the on-screen "tv guide" at the click of a button. The setup was a bit confusing initially, but overall it went relatively smoothly once we figured out the instructions -- which didn't take much time. We had the system up and functioning in about 10 mins (unlike ~1 hr with the RCA model). The on-screen instructions were understandable, easy and quick. The universal remote is user friendly and is comfortable to use.

Out of box and up and running in minutes. Works great from an antenna in attic, (with amplifier for long cable run). Xmitters 19 miles away, receives great-only a few pixel effects during high wind, mainly on weakest DTV station. Better reception than I had from analog channels. Will buy two more for my other sets when my coupons arrive.

I tried the converter with a rabbit ears and it only picked up two digital stations. I then used an outdoor antenna which I placed in the window and it picked up all available digital stations in my area. I think antenna is key.

Save your Money. Get the Zenith or any other model. Once you purchase this you are stuck with it.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
It worked great with the digital antenna signals, but it wouldn't pass through the analog signal from my Dish TV converter. Hence, if I kept it I would have had to buy a signal splitter, signal combiner, and digital filter to construct my own analog signal bypass to get my analog satellite channels back. It would have doubled the cost and had the look of a plumbing nightmare. I returned the unit.

"This is very nice product, even without the government coupon.
This product produced a digital quality image, without picture problems. Sound was good.
The EPG is fine. The unit has a signal strength indicator that works well. (Picked up 5 additional channels)
If you have a old CRT TV and live in a city then you may better to get this device.

The One thing I had My heart Set on was the Zenith DTT 900 Converter Box. I found it too hard to set up, or to even understand teh instructions and I think any one would agree with me. Does not configure the pip, one of the many features of the c27a25 which has alot of feature that are not supported on this converter box

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
I was originally going to buy the Zenith DTT900 but they didn't have them in stock so I went with this one. I didn't know what to expect but once I hooked it up it came up with 23 clear channels. I live about 25 minutes away from the source (Chicago) which from time to time creates pixels but all in all I am very happy with this converter. It definitely beats that old analog signal.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Recommended only if you live close to the broadcast towers. This box could not pick up any of the NYC digital broadcasts from a rooftop antenna located about 65 miles north of NYC. However, at the 45 mile range, I could pick up some of the NYC stations with a Terk HDTVa indoor antenna. Don't use this converter box for fringe area reception. Try the Zenith DTT900 instead.

The best product I experienced. Not "hot" compared with other converter products. really stable. I am keeping up the good feeling for the Digital Stream's DTV products.

Comments about Digital Stream Digital Stream DTX9900 Digital-to-Analog Converter Box:
Using autoprogram was not effective and I was disappointed until I tried manual programing. Lost some channels and gained some new. Now have 16 very good stations with correct antenna direction. You must wait for each channel from 2-69 to find the signal with different antenna directions. It takes awhile, but worth the trouble. Sound is up and down without strong signal.
