These are Bookshelf speakers, not Towers. If you're looking for that junk car with the sound system boom you will not get it here. And no, they don't equal my top of the line Norman towers eating 200 real watts per channel(old stuff but still among the best ever available in the U.S.) but for excellent full range sound reproduction they are great. I shopped several stores and other brands and could not find the full range sound reproduction these little guys deliver for less than, well, many times the price. Give them the 75-100 watts they want and add a large center speaker (not really necessary but nice) and keep them in a small to medium room and you will hear the triangle on that ancient Doobie Brothers album.

I bought the yamaha NS-6490 speakers for three reasons: Better Sound (Bass), Small price, And to match the quallity That my Yamaha RX-V392 reciever produced. I played around with the bass and treble settings on my reciever. Well it mastered in the crisp, clean treble department but lacked in the bass department. I would recommend the yamahs to a friend with a SMALL named stereo or a stereo no more than 100 watts.I am a 14 year old with a taste for bass. I have currently tested my speakers on other recievers and i still can't seem to find an answer for my speakers. I still use my speakers because my mom doesn't give me money for work around the house to buy new ones but when i get the money i won't hesitate to trade these speakers in for something better!! Yamaha you've let me down!

I bought these[$]speakers last week for a meditation center and hooked them up to the pyle 600w amp also from radio shack, that was [$]. Wow what a great set up for only [$]total! They kind of have a quality look and feel to them right out the box and they were kind of bigger ones than I had originally planned but now I really like the sizing they mean business and the sizing isn't for show it is for function. With the right spec amp you will get a very clear and powerful sound, easily filling larger living rooms without any distortion, way louder than I will ever use. highly recommended no need to spend more unless you have special requirements or a pro audiophile etc.

OK! So first off all those who think these speakers have no bass are totaly wrong. they must have week amplifiers like a sony. Sony make good speakers and tvs but nothing involving sound. I use a pioneer reciever with surround sound and have been using nothing but pioneer since my first pioneer in the early 90's. The sound these speakers reproduce are very full sounding. i use them for music as well as watching tv and movies on. i mostly listen to techno music which usually has a good amount of bass in. dont get me wrong every speakers can have more bass but these serve me just fine. these speakers also have a very sleek look to them. they fit perfectly in with the new look of electronics and such. i keep the covers off because all my audio and tv stuff is shiny black and silver. The white-ish look of the speaker drivers really add a cool look to my system. get some of these while you can if you have a good reciever capeable of reproducing bass.

If your needing a good full range speaker at the sub $100 mark, there is little competition.
Those complaining on the bass must like an exaggerated low end. The low end is accurate, and detailed with good extension to 45hz which is uncommon at this price.
Mids are not bad either, and there is not any mid range scooping going on.
These are not a tonally flat speakers though.
It is somewhat bright in the 3khz to around 6khz, with a suckout around 7khz.
Probably +/-6db overall.
Here are some measurements I found via google.
http://www.pult.ru/upload/images_pub/7623.jpg

Imaging, and sound stage are very good IMO, and will definitely fill a room with sound.

Oh, and these definitely have the wife factor going for them.
I know sound is very important, but isn't nice to bring home a set of speakers that actually bring a smile to the face of your better half, lol.

Why my local radio shack displays these on the bottom shelf unconnected with the grills on is beyond me?
Had these had the grills off, I would have noticed these earlier.
I was browsing bookshelf speakers online when I stumbled on these, and never knew Radioshack sold them.
As good as these look, displaying them with the grills off would really improve sales greatly.
These speakers really are eye catchers.

If a crispy sound with good bass extension at less than $100 is your thing, The ns6490 will be tough to top.
They get my recommendation for home theater, and music listening use.

We moved from a large home to a smaller apartment, so we needed different speakers. My husband has bought and return speakers and sub woofers. So I went looking on the internet read all your reviews and I went out and bought these. He loves them will never return these. He said they are perfect for our large living room not overbearing just the right amount of everything. I think they sound so crisp and clean. The price is great. Thanks all for the info and making me look smart to the husband.

I would like to kindly disagree with anyone who gives these great speakers a poor rating based (pardon the pun) on a supposed lack of good BASS response, or whatever (are you sure you've got your wires hooked up correctly & haven't crossed the polarities, resulting in poor bass-response?). As a professional musician/music teacher for many years, I know a good set of speakers/sound system when I hear one-regardless of price. And as an "old-school", "3-speakers are better than 2"-believer, I can truly attest that these FANTASTIC & affordable 3-way speakers with 8" wolfers (70W- NOMINAL power handling- 140W- peak) in combination with the Sherwood RX-4109 reciever (105 W x 2)I also just bought deliver INCREDIBLY crisp highs, mids & lows, with nice, well-defined & punchy BASS, even with NO external EQ attached (which really surprised me), let alone when you add one, then the sound is even more incredibly AWSOME !!! I've had a number of good quality sound systems/speakers in the past, and this combination, by far, is the very BEST I've ever had, bar none, and for under $300 for this perfectly-matched (to MY ears), very powerful system, it is an absolute STEAL !!! As proof-of-pudding, I would kindly invite any potential buyers into my 21'x20' music-studio to listen to Carlos Santana's "Jingo" or "Soul Sacrifice" with Carlo's guitar screamin' thru, combined with all those varied & intense rhythmic Percussion instruments going on- along with that driving BASS, cranked up to "45" (the highest level/sound-pressure my ears can stand-and this is under HALF-volume !!!- there is so much "headroom" with this system, I can't get them to distort) on these Speakers/System just to see your reaction. I mean, I am hearing things on these old original recordings that I NEVER heard before ! If you want more BASS, like the ultra-low RAP/HIP-HOP-like "BOOMING-BASS", then add a separate "BOOMER"-unit. But if you want regular, well-defined crisp & punchy BASS (even the lower-sounding 5-string BASS) that blends in well with the other instruments/percussion, then THESE Speakers/Reciever (or equivalent) for the price, is the most AWSOME thing I've run into for a LONG time ! Last Words: "BUY !!!"- If you've got a good amp/reciever & if you hook everything up right, I'm telling you, you WON'T be disappointed !!!

The yamaha Three way speakers attract your attnention very quickly. The design and the ten inch woofer makes you scramble for loose change. as your tearing open the box and you hook it up, crank the bass and your disappointed! these speakers can't handle the bass although the sound is crisp and clear. I thought that the 10 inch woofer and the box it sits in would over take me but its not powerful enough. now i'm saving up for more powerful equipment. these speakers are for people with stereo's with not much bass but not for big people looking for big sound.

I have an adcom gfa-545II a high end amp that cost me 600$ and it makes bass down to 20Hz unfortanetly these speakers only go down to 45Hz. So you see the woofer bouncing but they just cant get low enough to make that kind of bass.

Okay so Im really into clarity of sound. I walked into Radio Shack and I heard the speakers playing. I could'nt believe my ears. You can hear little things that you would'nt normally hear with regular speakers. And they were playing Star Wars 6 no less. I bought them right on the spot. I brought them home, hooked them up to my yamaha 600 watt receiver, put my ipod on and WOW. Really these spekers are very very very clear. The clarity you will find in these speakers are in what you will find in a high end polk speaker. Im very very satisfied. Trust me!!

I have these on my 7.1 Yamaha home theater with a JBL 400w sub and the Yamaha 444 center. It is amazing; my brother after listening sold his small Klips and duplicated my system. His friend after hearing his system duplicated it again. Nuf said.
I also have 4 of them on my Sansui 7001 quad receiver. Love it. Of course, sound is very individual but so far everyone who listens to my systems are amazed.

I purchased these because of their boxes. After removing the useless 7/8 'peeper' and replaced it with a port, and pulled the mid replacing it with a TangBand W4-1337SA and the woofer with a TangBand W8-740c. Sounding perfect, these retired my sub, the box is amazing; producing 83db (1w/1m) from 28-20k these are Heaven! I would not leave these stock, their hardware is good for keeping the RV from rolling away, but the boxes are worth the price alone.

I have a sweet cambridge setup for my home theater and just needed a set of bookshelfs for my tiny room. They sound great -- for people looking for boomy bass, look elsewhere. Come on people they're in a sealed cabinet (acoustic suspension) so lets just say they sound cleaner. They say they're made for home theater - but for a small room or dorm they make an excellent set of speakers for someone on a budget or doesnt require much. [...]

(MY OPINION)All Who know and follow Hi-fidelity audio admit Yamaha Receivers brandish not only a good buy for your money but a friendly user interface and most important are more than capable of delivering exceptional sound quality from its amplification system.

Nevertheless when purchasing Speakers on the other hand this is a different story. To be frank and to the point I was disappointed, (1) the quality is dependent on the monetary value placed upon the sale, [in most cases], (2) these speakers are very bright and considerably overshadow the midrange and third you can hear little to no bass especially if you are the type of person who is used to vented enclosure. This is my report in summery.

By Timothy MVerified Reviewer from Alum Creek, WV on 6/27/2007

Take these before you buy and check to see if their impedence are what they say 8 ohms. Mine checked out at 6 or 5.75 ohm. I was wondering why at high volume my tuner kept going off, so I checked the speakers. If you need 8 ohm impedance speakers these are not it they can damage you're system! Be safe and put a ohm meter on them before you buy.

These speakers are acoustically suspended so they do not go very low unless your amp has some low end punch... very nice design and removable grills are a plus. Highly recomended

Pros:

For the money spent, these Yamaha speakers are a great deal. The mid and high ranges are excellent, the low range (woofer) is passable but doesn't stand out, however, when played with another set of speakers that respond well to low frequencies (under 100 htz) the combination is outstanding. I am running these yamaha speakers on my stereo system (music only not TV audio) along with some DCM 16s speakers, and driven by a Onyko TX 8011, it makes a great sounding combination.
