The Sherwood 4109 is an unbelievable value. Decent power and can handle 2 sets of speakers with only a slight bass drop-off. The neat remote can switch inputs, change stations, turn speakers on/off, and adjust bass/treble so if you have a non remote receiver you can upgrade so frugally. The tuner is excellent too.

great reciever for just a small bedroom. It can drive my nice vintage jensen speakers. Has good basic features for the price. if you are buying a reciever this cheap, you probably arent expecting to get much. But i would say that this reciever exceeded even my low expectations. Sure beats my old ugly technics reciever. the sleep timer is also a plus, as i go to bed listening to music. Also like the programable stations. You can set the whole thing up by using the remote!!!the renge for the remote is a little close, but who cares. Awsome reciever and an awasome price.

I can't believe I got the sound this thing provides for the price I paid for it. Unreal! Get one; you don't need a fancy surround sound system, just hook this up to a decent pair of speakers (or 2) and enjoy great sound as well as all the money you saved!

i love this amp. just an hour ago i was taking it out of the box and setting it up. no problems at all. the reason for purchase was the price and to replace an old home theater in a box. however i did wish it had a front audio jack so i can have quick access to my iPod, but instead i have my av selector with front av jacks or my new RadioShack Digital Audio Link. i was able to hook up my dvd, ps2, tv,RadioShack Digital Audio Link, and laptop trough the Audio Link. i would recommend this to anyone who wants an affordable audio system. great sound, no problems!

FM tuner poor
By DTV Nubie from San Francisco on 5/9/2008
Cons:
Poor reception
Describe Yourself:
Tech Savvy
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

On 2 FM channels in San Francisco the reception was unacceptable. The first channel was overpowered by another station in the city.
The second channel did not come in at all.
I stopped my investigation there and returned the receiver to the store.
I am very close to transmitter towers and that might have been the problem.

Had to replace a receiver that finally died... powering two sets of old bookshelf speakers. This was perfect. In 20 minutes I had it hooked up and had half a dozen presets programmed. They don't advertise the remote control very well but it seems to have everything on it and is easy to operate. The well-mannered kid at the store didn't know how many presets... the answer is 30 and they're easy to set up. And the A-B switch let me hook up four speakers and use either combination of two or all four speakers... which is everything I was looking for.

My better half likes to sleep on the couch and I like to stay up late watching TV on my large screen so I went with this amp and a set of Radio Shack 33-1197 headphones and now everybody is happy. I have my direct TV plugged into this amp and I mute the sound on the TV. Does what I wanted and music and programs sound so much better with true stereo.

Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

I don't know why people are making any bad reviews about this receiver. It has a very inexpensive price, but it has great power and feature. The only thing I would add would be a front audio input for quick MP3 connections, but other than that it a great receiver. I use one in my garage and it is so loud, that you can hear it down the street even it warm or cold weather. The other one is in a commercial clothing store, and anywhere you go, you can hear it. If you want a great receiver at a low price, then BUY THIS RECEIVER.

I bought this stereo for [$] on Black Friday. I waited in line to buy one, and was incorrectly told there were none left. After asking someone else, who said they had plenty, I got it and immediately hooked it up, at 6:20 in the morning. It was okay, but not as good as my old Kenwood. Last week, I tripped over the speaker wire and broke it right in the middle. I went to Radio Shack and bought some 16 gauge wire and that improved the sound quality immensely. I turned up the receiver to MAX, and I still had decent sound quality with the new wire and my Sony bookshelf speakers. Overall, this is a good product. I have it in my bedroom and listen to it mostly at night. My only complaint is that the FM tuner lacks a full, rich sound. It gives a somewhat tinny sound compared to my cassette tapes and my mp3 player. Other than that, I have no complaints.

Cons:

The Sherwood RX 4109 is a good inexpensive 2 channel receiver. The reception on the fm band is very good but the am reception is poor but I think this is something that is typical of most receivers. I have had higher end receivers with the same problem. I will eventually get an amplified am antenna. It is easy to set up and has accurate controls. the only things I wish it had are a subwoofer output and a set of inputs on the front of the unit but for the price I guess you can't have everything. It suits my needs well. If you are looking for a basic stereo set up, I would recommend this product but if you are looking for a more advanced set up, you will have to get a 5 or 6 channel unit.

This product has been working great since I bought it. The remote control is very handy and the unit in general is every bit as good looking, good sounding and rugged as the previous amp that cost 4x as much and only lasted 5 years! If this unit dies in a few years, I'll buy another - no questions asked.

Excellent cheap 2-channel receiver

Cons:
lacks bass boost
Best Uses:
Basic Systems, Smaller Rooms
Describe Yourself:
Audiophile, Musically Inclined
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is a nice receiver for those who dislike surround for music (it's hard to find 2-channel ones like this nowadays).

I had a 70W/ch pioneer that sounded great, but it never had a remote, so I got this Sherwood w/ a gift card so I could get everything condensed into the entertainment center.

This is not the receiver for people who wish to fill up a cavernous basement, but it does a great job in a 12 x 14 living room. My HDTV is the hub for all inputs, so I keep this receiver on CD input and run a pair of Yamaha 8" 3-ways and a 200W powered Sony sub with it. You'll need a powered sub since this unit lacks any sort of bass boost.

It sounds nice and clean all the way up to about 3/4 of full volume - pretty good, since the rule of thumb is best sound at halfway (and that's too loud). For the money, it's hard to think of a complaint!

The system was easy to install and I was very pleased with its sound and operation. However after just a couple of weeks the system failed entirely; I was unable to power it on. Although I have had electronics that have arrived 'dead' I have never had one suddenly fail completely like this after it proved to have work fully. I can only advise folks NOT to purchase this product.

I bought this unit to drive an Optimus 12" subwoofer that was connected to a Yahama HTR-4350. This amp is aewsome for the price. I had looked for a long time at another Yahama but I did not want to spend the money. But in conjunction with this amp (Sherwood) the subwoofer sounds awesome. As a stand alone amp it is great. Clean powerful amp, nice well laid out romote control. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a basic amp with clean deep rich power and sound. This amp in a dorm room would sound awesome. Great for the novice.

This receiver is one of the bangs for the buck for any hi-fi enthusiast. For such a low price, you can get sound quality that rivals most home theater systems that cost much more money. Less is definitely more in this case. The discrete amplification really helped improve the sound quality of well mastered music media, and the radio signals are decent on stations that do not use lots of compression. The option to add 2 pairs of speakers is a plus so that you can use it in a smaller room or a larger room and the sound still feels like it surrounds you with the dynamics fully intact. The phono input is a must for me as I have a huge vintage vinyl collection, so that was a selling point for me. Since the sound quality and the build quality are both excellent, I don't end up having to upgrade to anything else.

Pros:

Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

This receiver's tuner has a very poor capture ratio so it may not be the best choice for those who live in large urban area such as NYC, where FM stations crowd the dial and buildings bounce signals (selectivity is adequate). In such a location you may find you need a quality directional antenna. However, in 90% of the U.S., there will be no problem.

Very quiet muting on FM yet very good sensitivity. Nice AM tuner also. Good-looking.A+B speakers but lacks the current capacity to play both pair at once. Caveat: phono inputs but do NOT use them with a turntable with built-in preamp--use CD or tape instead.
R/C buttons small & stiff.
Excellent value overall.

Bottom Line:

As a follow up, I couldn't resist commenting, once again, on the quality of the tuner in this admittedly budget receiver. Using the supplied antenna (this is recommended), with proper positioning, I am pulling in stations from as far as 60 miles away--including stations that I could not retrieve with a much more expensive stand alone tuner with any antenna. Some stations are incredibly life-like. Each time I play a cd, I am pleased by the Sherwood Receiver's responsiveness to the musicians playing the music; then, when I switch over to a live FM broadcast, I am once again reminded of how much I love FM! With the convenience of "free", pre-programmed music, no cd's to buy, a wide variety of music, and (with public radio stations) no commercials, FM remains one of the last sources of excellent quality analog music! The tuner in the RX-4109 may not have quite the sound quality or nuance of expensive stand alone tuners, but the quality of Analog FM stations--especially those that don't compress the heck out of the signal--compares very well to those more expensive stand alone tuners. And given the cost of even a mid-fi tuner, and pre/power amp combination, this little guy stands out as an incredibly unbelieveable bargain among stereo receivers. I have mine paired with two-way 8OHM floorstanders-- currently, with cheap 18 gauge speaker cable, and I have to admit, I am more inclined to splurge on expensive speaker cable before even considering outlaying even 500 dollars on a high quality used(!) tuner or separate pre/power amplifiers. If you enjoy listening to the radio as one of your primary sources of music listening, you will not be disappointed with the RX-4109. And if you don't want to outlay hundreds of dollars for separates, you very well might find you are quite contented with the RX-4109 and a pair of good quality mid-priced efficient speakers. Sherwood is a brand that has been around for many years; somehow, they were able to manufacture a very satisfactory piece of audio equipment both for those on tight budgets, as well as for those who realize good engineering/good sound doesn't necessarily have to come at a high cost! Put it in a Den, Bedroom or Kitchen as a simple two channel stereo, or use it as your primary stereo setup, and you may find that you won't feel a need to spend mega-dollars on separates to get an enjoyable music playback system.

Until I began my search ...
By Seth L from Denver on 6/15/2007

Until I began my search for a stereo receiver, I had no idea how difficult it is to find one! I live in a small apartment, and I have no desire or time to set up a 5.1 or 7.1 channel surroundsound system. I wanted something easy to configure with nice sound at an affordable price. I got all three wishes with this receiver. I'm blind, and, despite this, it took me only a very little while to connect my speakers, cable box, DVD player, and RCA Lyra Wireless audio receiver to it. I paired the receiver with a couple of thre way Yamaha bookshelf speakers, which I also found at Radio Shack, and the sound is quite good. Frankly, I think this receiver would be a great bargain if it were fifty dollars more expensive than it is. I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

By Todd CVerified Reviewer from Indiana on 5/11/2007

Excellent value! Simple to set up and use. The tuner in the RX-4109 alone is worth the price of admission. The extra features built in add to its high value. Such things as binding posts for banana plugs, a phono input(!), stereo/mono switching for the FM tuner (on the remote), and what appears to be a fixed line output labelled Aux out allow great flexibility for such an incredibly reasonably priced two channel receiver. Paired with fairly efficient speakers, the sound is much better than its price tag would lead you to believe. The bass is accurate and realistic, and overall, with proper time given for breaking it in, decent cables, as well as decent ancillary equipment, the RX-4109 is well worth the minimal investment! I give it a 5+ rating!
