it is better set it up outdoor.
I'm considering canceling my cable service and reverting to off-the-air reception.
I bought this antenna after trying a smaller indoor/outdoor one in my attic. Local stations are all in the same general direction from me, but a couple transmit from a different location that's a bit farther east than the main "antenna farm".
When I first hooked this antenna up in my attic, I had all the local DTV channels except one that's known to be weak. I moved the antenna about 5 degrees to the east, and then I had the weak channel as well.
But I find that I can't send this signal to more than one TV at a time. The instructions warn against putting a splitter or any sort of booster between the antenna and the powered booster that came with it. When I put a splitter behind the booster (that is, between it and the DTV box), then I lose one or more channels. The very presence of the splitter is enough to cause this; I had nothing even connected to the splitter's other output.
So far, I haven't found any booster that doesn't require inserting something inline at the antenna end, which this antenna's instructions say not to do.
I bought this antenna 2 winters ago. It worked through the warranty period and then died. I bought another one with the same result. Avoid. Warranty is only 90 days. There are cheaper units with a lifetime warranty. It's great while it works and is easy to set up, but it's not worth it if it doesn't work longer than 90 days.
it worked like a normal antenna and it cost so much. worked the first 2 days then it just broke. [...]. it wasnt worth it all.
I use to get several digital channels before the rain. Now I only get 2. Piece of junk after only 6 months. I want my money back.
I live in the Sacramento area 30 miles from the antenna farm. I tested this antenna on my living room floor and was amazed at the HD reception at ground level. I permanantly mounted it in the garage attic and all of the local HD stations come in crystal clear. The antenna is lightweight with heavy duty mounting hardware. I couldn't be more pleased with this antenna.
Finally an antenna that works!
I have trees around my home and have tried so many different antenna's I almost gave up. I brought this antenna home, hooked it up and had a better signal from the living room than I had from the antenna on the roof.
It's now mounted near my satellite dish for the off air HD and I couldn't be more pleased.
If you're like me and and have all but given up give this antenna a chance.
Put it in my attic and pointed it downtown. Works quite well. I can pick up all the local stations. Split it to get FM as well.Comes with a/c supply. The difference when powered on vs powered off is minimal. The power only helps a little with marginal stations. I would have done just as well buying a $30 passive antenna instead of spending [$], but at least it does what they say it should do.
I've tried 4 other Radio Antennas (they must be sick of seeing me). I started with bunny ears then inside the outside antennas and this one worked the best. It was easy to install, I just mounted it on my roof, adjusted it to get the best signal, ran the wire through the old cable hole and that's that. I get Detroit channels great and on a clear day Toledo channels.
After buying this I tested the attenna by holding it near a north facing window and hitting scan and not even mounted I went from 6 channels with rabbit ears to 22. Being way to hot to get on the roof I mounted it on a 10ft masting and attached it to the pole for the bird feeder in the back with trees in the way I was able to pull in stations from as far as 45 miles away and I'm 80 ft above sea level, the front to back ratio is quite good, the backside is able to pull in stations up to 15-20 miles. I can't wait to get this on the roof..........
Firts of all, I live in Homestead fl.Almost florida city.I I also live in a townhouse where no aluminum antennas are permitted.I also purchased RCA digital converter since my tvs are all analog.I placed the antenna outside and aimed it North/Northeast I got nothing at all digitally and a poor reception of channel 6 (our strongest signal) by analog..I Aso hooked up a Phillips indoor/outdoor antenna inside my home.I recieved 12 channels digitally.not that I recommending the Phillps but This wa a big disappoint ment.Maybe works well nearer to Miami.
i am south of miami so I face it north east and get 37 channels. This unit is best if you have a HOA because it looks like a dish and works great with digital tuners i like digistream I get siganls from 70-93 on all channels. It was better than radio shacks small white outdoor one. Considering the cost of sat tv with 5 boxes, I canceled my service and have all 5 rooms with free tv. I save 80 bucks month.
I highly recommend this one. it's directional so have someone read you the meter while you rotate it for optimum reception. I got my mom inlaw and bro inlaw hooked on this one too they also canceled sat tv.
Outdoor mount, great reception for 1 year then signal strength dropped from 95/100 to 65 at best from 30 miles (many stations would not display). Took it apart and soldered wires as previously reported and back to 100 for signal strength. Too bad that a product that works so well has such a flawed design. I would recommend with a word of caution.
Read that it was flimsy in weather and it seems possible as I unpacked it. So decided to try it first outside, then inside, then in the attic. Found that out side and attic gave about the same results and mounted it in the attic as the more secure location. Before this I had rabbit ears coupled with a digital antenna on the set and got only a few channels. Now the TV set scanner found 21 digital and 20 analog. I'm located about 20 miles north of the San Francisco broadcast towers and with a few hills in between. Digital pictures are sharp and the old analog stations much improved. Good product.

I live in Concord NC and all the local HD stations come from Charlotte about 30 or more miles away. Got this antenna and decided to try it in my attic.
This thing is awesome! All my HD channels come in with full strength signals. I have read a lot of comments online about attic installs where there is a loss of 30%-50% signal loss. That was not the case with this antenna.
I would like to note that all of my HD stations were in the same general direction, but I believe this is a multi-directional antenna.
It is made of plastic that could be considered flimsy. That was part of the reason for the attic install, but no problems with it.

i bought this antenna and is very good catching ota channels but i think it gets better if installed outdoor, people says it gets damaged easily by rain and wind so be carefull and install this antenna in a protected and safe place.iam impresed it works perfectly.

I limit myself to low profile antennas due to space and location when mounted on the roof. I purchased and installed this antenna seven months ago and it has worked better than all previous antennas I've tried. For seven months it was flawless with perfect clarity and many channels. Then we noticed after a week of wind storms the reception decreased and then was gone totally. I removed the screws from the outer shell and took cover off to find the two wires connecting the circuit board to the antenna itself had disconnected from the solder joints. I soldered new wires back on and put back together and reinstalled. Worked 100% flawless again. Aside from the soldered wires breaking the antenna is great. If you have this antenna and it just stops working check this, it's a simply fix. Probably could have been designed more durable to withstand vibrations, wind, etc. Overall I love this antenna despite the one issue.
I live in an apartment complex in Avon, IN and this pulles in over 30 channels with the new DTV converter box.
Great antenna! Nice sleak look similar to a dish antenna. I just got the new converter box and it pulls in over 32 stations.

lasted about 6 months, w/ only 90 day warranty! I see a lot of "Short Life" reviews, add me as one more sucker...

I've had mine installed for three months and it just stopped working. The unit had been working excellent and I was really impressed with it's performence. However, if it only lasts three months it's definetely not worth it.
I was using the Square Shooter 2000 (UHF only) but was looking for an antenna that could pick up High VHF (7-13) in that size. Then I found this one. I live 42 miles from my local TV stations antenna farm and this antenna picks up the digital VHF channels 7-13 i couldn't get with the SS 2000,and of course it picks up all UHF. Signal stregth for 42 miles away are: UHF 80s and 90s and High VHF 70s. Very happy customer.

been on my house since september 2007...have had no problems...still very high digital strength...most channels at 100%...one at 85%...all stations are over 25 miles away...had alotta storms with high winds...no problem even during storms...maybe i got a good one...i"m not sure but love the HD picture it gives...

Works great. We are 5-9 miles from the transmission towers in Portland, so signal strength is not a challenge. I intended to mount outside, but after testing in various location I found that inside the attic under a tile (concrete) roof gave the best results - and saved me the trouble of mounting outside.

I have had 2 of these. Both lasted about 3 months and quit. Radio Shack stood behind it the first time. Hopefully they will the second time.
OK!! I'm on a budget. It's does the job, but the 10db gain amp does seems weak pulling some of TV channels. I'm getting signal strength from 50-71 on a 0-100 scale. The plastic casing is ok but flimsy around the back mount but good enough mount to mounting base.
Over it does do a descent job using it indoors, since I can't mount it outside of my rental place.
Over all that's why i gave it a 4 out 5 stars

I have two HDTVs. The large one in the living room receives signals from this antenna in attic. Receives good signals from 40 miles. I put one of these antennas outside for my bedroom TV to receive more distant stations. It worked fine when new but didn't hold up to the windy weather and rain we have in eastern North Carolina. I do not recommend for outside use. It will not hold up. It is very suitable for the attic.

Purchased 5 months ago and mounted on the corner of the roof it produces great pictures on my HDTV. Easy setup and adjustment. No problems other than picture quality degrades somewhat during heavy rain storms.

Problem with antenna is the wire inside is too flimsy or to short, as cold and heat work on the antenna it breaks the wire connecting the antenna to the inner board. I took mine apart and resoldered the wires and now works perfect again. Would be an easy fix for the factory. Scary to think how many people may have trashed theirs for this reason. Hint if you are going to disassemble yours, remove the nut that holds the antenna connection to the case first then pull cover off.

Worked really well for about 5 months, then signal started to fade and some days would work other days not at all. Currently can't even pick up an air channel, Overpriced JUNK~
After purchasing this antenna, which worked fine, I found out that my old "analog" antenna worked just fine. I suggest you try your old antenna first before purchasing a new "HDTV" antenna. It's all a marketing ploy to make you think you need a new antenna.

During the last four months the antenna performed great.
After that the reception was almost nonexistent. I wouldn't recommend this product.
Since waranty expired within the 90 days after purchase, I did replaced this antenna by a powered RCA rabbit ears antenna, did place it in the Attic and get the signal back to normal (except getting ABC 5.1 & 5.2)
It picks up two of the three locals 20 miles away. For the [$] the product should be equipped with a stronger and varible gain amp. The third station comes in on a clear day other days it comes in but, freezes to frequently to watch. I mounted it outside on a pole 20 feet off the ground.
At first the antenna performed flawlessly. After four months reception was almost nonexistant. Took antenna cover off only to find that the solder joints between the circuit board and the antenna elements were broken. Very poor construction. The RF cable puts undue stress on the connector and circuit board which makes the wires to the antenna elements very fragile. The mounting for the circuit board is poor as well, two plastic slides, and adds to the problem. I wouldn't recommend this product unless you are using it indoors with little or no pressure on the antenna connector.

It's true that after a wile the signal goes dead, but after opening it up, and reattaching two wires, then reinforcing them with a bunch of soder, you get even better signal and you wont have to mess with it again
This antenna is great. Easy to tweak to get just the right picture. Every durable product dropped it from roof with just some minor scratches as a result. I picked all the channels in my area with a minimum of 70% signal strength

Nice product. I tested the product prior to installing on my roof.(I mounted the antenna on a 3 foot tripod w/ 5 foot mast) I receieved great signal strength having the antenna on the back of my sofa when I ops tested it. I really noticed a difference when I didn't have the built in amplifier plugged in, it didn't pull in half the stations. It's nice that it is omni-directional since there are multiple stations in different directions and I don't have to reposition anything. I am 60+ miles away from local stations and it works like a charm. Hope this helps when making a choice.
If you live in the north, your kid may be able to use it as a sled.
I purchased this antenna and it worked great for about four months. Then I noticed severe signal fluctuation. Now it does nothing at all. I get no signal strength reading on both TVs hooked up to it. It was easy to install, but from reading some of the reviews rain etc. causes problems. It has been windy but the antenna is pointed the same direction. We have had some rain and freezing conditions. I don't know what happened. What I do know is it doesn't work any longer. I went from a great supporter in September to someone warning in January. And guess what? It's out of warranty.
I bought a Terk HD-TVi indoor antenna and was only getting 65-75 percent reception. Then i tried a Philips MANT940 Indoor/Outdoor antenna which was a little better about 75-80 percent reception but then would consistantly drop down and then jump back up causing pixelation from time to time which was really annoying. Finally i decided to purchase this one. I am definetly happy with this antenna. No more pixelating with my DirectTV(HR10-250 Tivo) YEAH!!!
Third time's a charm... This is my 3rd antenna and I am very happy with the results. I live in Mira Mesa, San Diego, CA. I mounted this device on a 6' mast on my two-story roof. Using antennaweb, I pointed it towards Mt San Antonio in TJ where my primary target is to get channel 6 FOX. Sure enough, FOX came in loud & clear (80%). Along with FOX, I can get ALL of San Diego's networks including PBS (100%). I can also get KTTV, KCBS and KOCE all from Los Angeles and all 105.0 miles away, according to antennaweb. Friends, after much research and a few trials, I have founds a great device that has given me FREE HDTV. I watched my Chargers beat-up on the Colts and now looking forward to seeing my Bolts in the AFC-championship game with the Pats in FULL HD. The picture quality is incredible - FOR FREE. Once you go HD, you cannot go back..... Oooo-So True. For those blessed with having a HDTV, do yourselves a favor and get an antenna that can bring you FREE OTA HD. This device is working great for me, with the one exception that the power injector was defective. I took it back to RS and they swapped it out. I am very happy with it. I hope this helps in your search.
I would buy this product again ...works great!
Installation was not bad. Initial preformance was great - Clear picture and good reception on both analog and digital. I ran it into a distribution system and fed three different TV's -two analog and one HD. Do not like the 90-day warranty. Had it 4 months and then we had some wind - not excessive but enought that it KO'd the antenna. Since it was out of warranty, I opened it up and found a couple of broken wires between the circuit board and the antenna grid. Tried to repair the wires, but the circuit board apparently was damaged by the open circuit and the repair did not help. Store said "over 90 days - we can not help you." I will not get another one if it is not more reliable than this.
I live in upstate NY and Dish Network does not offer locals in HD yet. I purchased this antenna in May because of it's looks and price. I mounted it at the peak of my home and was able to pull in 14 channels from Mt. Mansfield in VT...4O miles away with the lowest being 75%. All summer and fall I had no problems at all. Until this winter...Now I am only receiving 2 all the time and sometimes 2 more. Wow...a grand total of 4 channels for over [$] and the time and effort of mounting a useless dish on my roof. I went onto my roof in the middle of winter made sure the antenna was clear (it was) and wasn't moved by wind(it wasn't). Right in the middle of football season!!! I can't even receive the analog signals. I purchased the Terk amplified indoor antenna just so I could watch my games (Go Giants!!!, by the way) and it was pulling in all 14 channels again at higher percentages than this so called outdoor antenna. Don't buy it unless you test it in the winter or maybe try mounting it in your attic out of the way of the elements, but you'd be taking a chance.
Direct TV doesn't offer local channels in the Columbus, Ga. area so we mounted this in the attic to bring in the OTA HD signals for the network affiliates. Picks up all 4 networks perfectly from 20 miles NE of the towers.
I have this unit for about 6 months. It worked good especially for channels 2 to 7 which I couldn't get with my rabbit ears. Suddenly, it dropped 90% of channels. Called the store, and they suggested I replace the whole Unit. Very sad! I did some research and found out that Antenna Craft is the maker, I have been attempting to reach for days, no luck!
Dish Network Las Vegas, NV does not offer local channels in HD, so an external antenna is required. Could not locate any product that could pull in all of the local channels. None pulled in PBS 1,2,& 3. This was the only antenna that pulls in all 3 PBS HD channels. Nearly perfect signals re PBS, but otherwise performs well all other local channels. Attractive and discreet enough to fit in a CC&R requirement community. I am still searching for the perfect performing external antenna.
I bought this antenna as a replacement for an indoor HDTV/UHF/VHF/FM antenna. I live in a valley with hills blocking most of the transmitters for OTA channels.
I went to a friends house that was in a good location on top of a hill and was impressed with 10 channels compared to the 3 he got with the same indoor antenna I have.
Took it to my house, installed it, pointed it at the strongest signal. The signal comes in crystal clear, compared to fuzzy with the indoor antenna. And as a bonus, I get 1 additional channel!. Not bad compared to what I had. I can't wait until I can get an ATSC HD tuner to test it with. I figured I may as well future proof my investment.
Have not tried FM from it, but it does describe FM blocking to prevent problems in the low VHF bands. Might be why 1 review didn't like it.
Looks good outside, it's not a gigantic boom that will have problems with wind, and receives signals just as good as a boom can in my opinion.
Only thing that could make this better is an Omni-directional antenna. But I'm still happy.
I wanted to replace the rabbit ears I was using 'cause I hated having to get up and re-adjust the tuning for specific stations. Tried a small Phillips HD antenna[...] and it wasn't any better than the ears. Read the reviews and decided to try this and it's amazing. I receive ALL the HD channels without any adjustment. I am 40 miles from Chicago. Just great. I plan to put it up in the attic. For now it's sitting next to my dresser and I get a great signal. It is large, so I wouldn't leave it open. Don't want to put it outside cause it screams "I have an HDTV." Highly recommended.

This is the perfect Antenna for anywhere. [$] well spent. My grandparents live out in the country and have always had poor reception because the nearest tower is 60 miles away. Today i went and got them a new HDTV and bought this bad boy, hooked it up inside and just pointed it out their window, it picks up everything in CLEAR AWESOME HD without even mounting it outside. I recommend this to everybody looking to get an HD antenna and this would be especially good for RV owners. You get what you pay for, best buy of the year.
I live 5 minutes from Downtown Sacramento and am unable to pick up any Analog tv stations mounted in my attic... and holding outside. Purchased for future HD use but mainly for local FM reception. Using a Onkyo SRTX805 and Parasound Zone Tuner I get static in the low frequencys. Would not recommend to anyone using for an Analog antenna (even though manuel say so) Thank you [...] return policy.

If you mostly watch local channels, get rid of your satellite or cable (and the bill!). This antenna delivers as promised. I am 40 miles away from the signal in Houston. I receive all the digital signals in the area and the picture is perfect - better than it was with Dish HD. That is with the antenna mounted in the attic of my two story. Note that you do have to have a TV with a digital tuner to get the digital channels.
Decided to try this b/c of inside set up. I have it on a plant ledge in the living room. Signals are 75-80% from towers 55 miles away. Its not the best looking living room decoration...but it certainly does the trick.

I read all the reviews and was skeptical this work for my location.
I have hdtv with an outside antenna on a tower and so had low expections of this working for my friend. But after reading the reviews I bought one an indoor installation for a friend.
I hooked it up and set it in a chair next to the tv. Our hd stations about 20 miles away and so I thought maybe one or two stations might have a signal.
Well to my surprise this antenna worked like a champ. It works almost as well as my high gain antenna at 60ft.
I work on the road, mostly in rural areas in Southern Texas. It is very easy to set this up using antennaweb and a compass. The antenna just has to be pointed in the general direction of the transmission towers. It will even get good HDTV reception from transmiters behind the antenna and from 65+ miles away.
One Caveat, I use this for digital reception, but even analog reception is fairly good.

After hours of research I finally decided to get this antenna. First I thought it was a lot smaller like the size of a plate but its just like the size of a dish. [...] I brought it home and hooked it up and it is AMAZING. The channels even if not in HD look 10X better than with the cable company. I live in central NJ about 36 miles from NYC where the transmitters are and it picks up 37 channels, 16 of which are HD including all the major networks. Currently its next to me on top of the couch until I can get to tools to install outside and I have a strong signal. Would definitly recommend this one
My house is about 9 miles from all of the local transmission towers - and they are all within 3 degrees of each other.
This directional HDTV antenna, mounted on the side of my house, gets perfect reception of all local, digital channels (even without the signal booster).
The picture quality of Digital OTA is so much better than Cable that I've canceled my cable service.
One of the best investments I've ever made.
This antenna works as designed. Excellant HDTV, and poor analog signal reception. I didn't expect this to work well in VHF range for which you would probably need a separate antenna. I don't really know the range of the stations but it does pick up a lot. I'm very happy with the performance. Power injector doesn't fit tight into my Sony Bravia TV input.
I am about 45 miles away from Downtown LA and I was able to pick up all the HD stations from Tustin Ranch area. In fact, I did not have to mount the item outside the house.
I Highly recommend this item.

After years of using rabbit ears on a 20" CRT TV, I decided to purchase a better antenna when we purchased a 37" HD LCD. After looking at several web sites and reading numerous reviews, I decided on this unit. I was influenced by two reviews in particular. First was the review by FreeHD who, like us, lives about 60 miles east of L.A. The other was the review by Rodeo Girl. Based on her comments I decided to place the unit in our attic space to protect it from wind, weather and UV. After going to antennaweb.com, I pointed the face of the antenna west, approximating the direction recommended by that site. I did not even mount the unit. It is merely sitting on top of the isulation in my attic, resting against a vertical 2x4. All I did was attach the cable to the antenna, attach the signal booster directly to the back of the TV, and voila! The results were outstanding.
After marginal signals with rabbit ears, we now have clear signals on all the local VHF and UHF stations (about 72, all told), including all available HD programming. We are even getting a clear signal from a station located 50 miles EAST of us.
At this point, I cannot think of a single negative thing to say about this product.
I am able to pull in HD stations at Mountain Cabin from Bakersfield California (about 16 miles away). Signal is stable. I am going to buy a second unit for the Los Angeles area.
Like most people, just worried about spending money on something your not sure of...but I am very very satified about this antenna...have 4 local channels...3 are at 100%...other at 80% signel strength...all are more than 25 miles away...2 on uhf,2on vhf...unplugged booster and still had over 75% signel...I normaly do not leave comments, but this antenna is well worth the money and not very costly either...my HD on my 56 inch is perfect...
EASY TO INSTALL WORKS GREAT
[...] Analog VHF signal is nonexistant. Analog UHF signal is nonexistant. The literature states that it is good for both and it has no signal on either. HD was good for a week and then dropped 3/4 of the channels. Very poor service life. Still under warranty but [...] store personel figure if it works on some channels it must be working ok and that is not the case. DO NOT BUY THIS ANTENNA! IT WON'T LAST LONG ENOUGH FOR THE CHECK TO CLEAR THE BANK AND THE WARRANTY IS JUNK.
In my quest to get OTA HD signals for my television, my adventure started with attic installs of large multi-element antennas. Since I don't live close to the television broadcast towers (I live in Loganville, a suburban area to the northeast of Atlanta), I did not even bother with rabbit ears or small television top antennas like the Silver Sensor. But with attic installs, the best I could seem to get was a few powerful UHF broadcasts. I had zero luck with anything VHF (NBC in Atlanta transmits over VHF), so I decided it was time to break down and put up an outside antenna. My two big concerns were finding an antenna that would not be an eyesore on my house, and would be able to pull in all the major channels from around 35 miles out.
I found this antenna online and ended up buying it in the store. The kit comes with most of the major parts you need for your installation (you are on your own with the coax line to your tv, but that is to be expected). It includes the mounting post, the antenna, a signal booster and all the mounting hardware. The instructions are clear and the installation is a snap. It took me about an hour to get it bolted the the side of the house and a picture on my screen. This is a directional antenna, which is nice for me since I am far enough from the city for all the transmitters to be in the same general direction. I did not even have to get it spot on to get a perfect signal, it seemed to be pretty forgiving as long as I was pointing it towards Atlanta. I managed to get all the major network signals for my city at better than 90% (most at 100%), and I knew my VHF problem was solved when I watched NBC for the first time.
Overall I could not be more pleased with this antenna, it is a real home run for Radio Shack. I do want to qualify this review with a few details though. I live in a flat area, and another than trees and other single story houses, don't have any major obstructions blocking the signal. Also, I live far enough out were all the transmitters are in the same general direction, so I really can't say anything about how this antenna would perform for a multi-directional setup (it was forgiving about direction, but would loose signal if facing away from the city). And the most important detail I have found, your mileage almost always varies with ATSC tuners. My brand new LCD big screen television has a very poor ATSC antenna,
