I'm on my third and final Linksys BEFSR41. They work fine for awhile and then quit. They have a new web-based configuration for it which helped the first time, but once it quits nothing will connect it to the Internet. I don't know what D-Link is, but am about to find out thanks to those that wrote below. I'm a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and know much about networking. This router does not hold up over time. Period.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Linksys! I've used this unit and others as an engineer for over 8 years now and yet to be hacked. Our multi Billion $$ dollar Health Insurance Corp. provides these to all Remote and Work at Home users as a standard. The only problem with Radio Shack is it unfortunately lets incompetent people take highly technical product home expecting it to be plug and play. Some of you people need licensing period. Look if you're going to play with a network then get training before exploding on any product. This machine is the best provided you know what you are doing!!!

DO NOT BUY ANY "LINKSYS" PRODUCT!

Radio Shack should be embarassed to sell any Linksys product. I purchased (from Radio Shack) and set-up the BEFSR41 router May 2007, in July 2008 the router stopped working -- lost connectivity. It was determined the router was the problem! Linksys said for [$], they could extend the 1-yr service warranty and try to help me--but no guarantee to have the money refunded if it didn't work. Even on the Linksys website, customers complain! As one complaint wrote: "I finally was forced to give up [trying to fix with tech support] and buy a D-Link. No more Linksys problems for me..." RADIO SHACK NEEDS TO DISCONTINUE FLAWED LINKSYS PRODUCTS IMMEDIATELY!!!

High load + Vista = Complete headache

Have owned this router for years, saw it here, as I'm shopping around for a different one, and thought I'd leave a comment. This router works well most of the time, but drops connection and resets under high load traffic, P2P / Bit Torrent traffic. Will happen every several minutes. On Vista, I'm an advanced experienced user and still can't really figure out why, it happens every other minute if use Bit Torrent AT ALL. I know Vistas' got its probs, but it is the routers fault. Have done as much as I can to ease the connection load on it, to little effect, this router REALLY hates Bit Torrent traffic from Vista.

Works ok on XP if don't work it too hard. If on Vista, forget it, buy something else.

I am on my second Linksys in less then 40 days, and am about to return this one...out of the box, both have had major problems..set-up is easy enough but it's moot if the hardware doesn't work. A few may have success with this unit but I would bet, not many...If I could have given it "0" stars, I would have done so....

Randomly drops connection. Must hard reset router regularly for it to work properly. Went to Linksys about this and there is no current fix other than rolling back the firmware to an older version. Known problem with this router.

This is the WORST router. ...
By JEAN W from RAVENSWOOD WV on 9/6/2006

This is the WORST router. The first one I purchased NEVER worked. Called tech support about 6 times and was finally told that I needed a new one. Purchased a new one and it didnt work either. Called tech support another 10 times and was given a different answer every time. Fist time I was told the wires were bad and to replace them, next time I was told my computer motherboard was bad, had that replaced and their awful router still didnt work. Was then told to send it back for replacement!!! I dont think so, save yourself some money and buy a D-Link!!!!

This is a great router ...
By Kenny M from Ohio on 11/27/2005
Pros:
Easy to use, Good performance, Good Value, Reliable

This is a great router for home use with many advanced features. For anyone interested in IT this is a great way to get started learning how to configure basic network services and learn how firewalls work. As your network grows you can add more switches to expand capacity and even connect to your home office from a remote office using the VPN passthrough feature. With NAT built in you can be sure that your computers are virtually invisible to the outside world. I recommend this to anyone looking for a low cost solution that is easy to setup and reliable for home office and small office use.
