Just upgraded from dial up to AT&T DSL. This router is not plug and play with such a set up, despite what the CD tells you. There is a learning curve involving going to the very helpful linksys forums and learning how to log in to the router to set the router configuration to connect to the AT&T modem. Performance wise this is a fast reliable router, I had to return a Netgear router that continually dropped the DSL connection.

I have used many different routers and am very experienced in computers. This router has the longest range and speed for its price. I have had this router for nearly 3 years and it has not failed on me once. The only problem is the installation program that is not very good. Instead you can just plug it in, go to the web browser and type 192.168.1.1 and and access the menu. It is so much easier that way. I have a three story house and the router is on the third floor. I can get 3 bars from my basement with very fast speeds. The security on this thing is also the top. It has the new WPA and WPA2 and also has mac address filtering. [...] highly recommend this router to anyone who has multiple computers and wants a reliable network that they only set up once and can leave it.

This was a great product.... for about a year, after this, it would stop working and then would fail. At this point, I couldn't use my wireless connection for a month! Yet, after that, it started working again. But on the bright side, it was easy to set up, and is very secure.

There are a number of negative reviews regarding this product. I wanted to setup a home network after switching from DSL to Cable internet service. The setup was a little tedious since I'm basically network-challenged, but with a little help from the support desk, it has been up and running for about a year now.

This is one of the poorest operating computer components I have had in twenty years. Constantly had to re-set - sometimes three times a day. Had it for about 7 months and it did me a favor by totally crashing. Saved me the time of taking a sledge hammer to it!

It timed out once the first time i set it up but i unpluged it and its been working like a dream ever since. Great product, these idiots with the problems just don't know what their doin.

I bought the router about a year ago; since I had switched to cable internet service, and I wanted a home network set up. I have done some research on the router and have found some varied information. It seems that this is a very popular router, however, it is very easy to hack. Many connected systems operate better or only with the WEP security feature. Thus the router can be easily bypassed. I live in an apartment, and at first the router was great. Now that there are more residents, I am having a dropped connection on a regular basis. The only way to reconnect to the internet is to reset the router. This is inconvenient to have to do it every day or if you are in the middle of something, and lose your connection. If you live in a home with some space between the neighbors, this is a great router with a strong signal. It is easy to set up, and to change the settings; customer support is good if you need it. This said, I am looking for a new router, and I am considering the D-Link Gaming router (DGL-4500). Good luck, and I hope this review helps.

Everyone that put one star is technologically stupid. I set this up when years ago when I was 15 years old and i was ok. The security part was a little annoying at first but I found out how to do it. Setting it up without security is easy. One of the best ways to set it up with security is to set it up without security and then got to is gui by going to an internet browser and typing its ip address. 192.168.1.1 is the default. go to wireless and then wireless security. If you have firmware that has just come with the router you may want to update to 4.7.1.1. This has WPA 2 with is nearly impossible to crack. This router is also faster with speed booster. I have tried transferring files from my laptop to my friends laptop and it was faster for my router then his. Also the range is great. I am 2 floors down from my router and i get 20% lowest to 64% highest usually around 34%. This is good enough single to have fast speeds and it will only slow down and be less reliable at about 10% or less. If you are completely technologically dumb (in other words u probably are not even setting this up yourself because you wouldn't know were to start) you may want to get the easy push one button and it dose it itself. I have yet to see one of those that are as good as this router though.

My girlfriend and I bought this router about a month and a half ago and after two weeks it just died. All the lights just stayed lit up and nothing would work. We wanted to return it to the store but didn't have the receipt because we were told at the store that it was very reliable. We then called Linksys and they told me they didn't know what was wrong and that they'll send me a new one. I have not received a call from them like they told me they would and I have still not received a new one. I realize that not all electronics are perfect but after reading around not all models but this one "brick" or crash for no reason. I only got to use it two weeks and now have to buy a new one. I don't think it will be a linksys this time around.

By Rob B from PA on 6/7/2007

After the learning curve, I was able to get this router to secure my new wireless system confidently. I never had a wireless system before and the WRT54GS proved a capable performer. I'm getting another for my office in case either fails. It's easy to reset to factory defaults and has many security modes.

By kishore g from chicago on 3/20/2007

I bought this router one 26 days back.On first day, i could not configure wireless setting as default it is not accepting the default password. I have quite knowledge of networks and routers. I had to install lastest firware in order to make it accept. May be linksys is good, BUT I GOT VERY BAD PRODUCT. Though it worked quite well, every now and then i could not access the web. I had to unplug the power and plug it again. Then it started to work ,but not today. Today i tried many times, and i gave up. Tommorow, Iam gonna give it back to radio shack and take new one. My saying is Link Sys is not perfect! (Edited by moderator.)

By Doug SVerified Reviewer from Plum Point, MD on 1/25/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Good performance, Good Value, Reliable

My GS router has been installed a little over six months now. Linksys has done nothing to improve the logging feature. (Not ncessary for most folks.) It is still broken. I use an alternative firmware called HyperWRT to send logging data to a third party product called LinkLogger. This way I can monitor the IP's that the router blocks. The linksys firmware does not record every blocked IP. I use an encryption key and MAC address filtering. Security is great and distance is super. I have no deadspots in a 3500 square foot home with the router in the basement. I was very impressed with the set up directions Linksys provided. They take the time to write good documentation and it really shows. This router is well worth the price since it also does VPN passthrough something the G router or the basic wired router with 4 port switch do not do. This is a must have product for a wireless home network.

By Dominik G from New York on 12/3/2005
Pros:
Easy to use, Good performance, Good Value, Reliable

Just bought and installed this product. The installation could not have been any easier. What they don't tell you is that you need to write down the encryption key that you create (which you should create for your network's security) because you will need to type in this key to log into your network with your wireless devices, such as other PCs or laptops. This product is working great and is very easy to install. I have a 2 bedroom apartment and get exceptional reception everywhere.
