No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Although previous versions of this model are reported to work fine in Ubuntu, the current version doesn't. A review on Amazon mentioned that they changed the chipset to something Linux-unfriendly without changing the model number. :( Seems to work fine on Windows Vista, though.
