Very Good detector, First time out on way home from college I was running 15 over and it went off 3 times and gave me about 1/4 mile alert and all three were legit no false reads. Saved me about a $150 ticket.

People don't seem to understand that a radar detector is not a license to speed, just a tool to help avoid getting caught. Is it Perfect, no, but for 100 bucks...seriously. If you want perfection pay 5 times that for something nicer. The safety alerts don't always work because not every agency has the technology to broadcast the alert. Don't buy it as a crutch, use it to help you see/hear cops before they get you. I used it to drive on a 2000 mile round trip. It saved me 2 times, and 2 other times I was just lucky not to be speeding when the cop was just randomly poping cars. Even if it only saves you from 1 ticket its still worth the money.

I wouldn't recommend the XRS9485 until the bugs are worked out. I received this as a gift so I probably will not be able to take it back being that I don't have the receipt of purchase.
I was wondering why the unit was so quiet and was happy at first because I thought with modern technology they figured out how to avoid those alarm systems in banks stores etc...
The other day I was driving and saw one of those on the side of the road check your speed radars in use and not a BLIP OR ANYTHING registered. That got me wondering right away.I am going to try to hopefully get another one of a different model because my older one worked great but the speaker went in it from the sun of having it on the dash.

Safety Alert doesn't work
By Grayson from New Jersey on 3/7/2008
Pros:
Easy To Mount
Cons:
Inaccurate
Best Uses:
Highway Driving
Describe Yourself:
Commuter
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I drive mostly in the city and for some reason my radar detector does not gone off whenever an ambulance passes me. The safety alert is not work ing and that is why I am taking it back. On the highway and in the city, I did get alerts. But I did have some instances, when a police car passed with their lights on and I wasn't alerted. I am considering returning and getting the same model, I am wondering if my particular unit is defective. I have had the detector for a couple of weeks.

This was the worst birthday present ever. I have passed by 8 cops who I am certain had their radars on and it has not picked up one signal. I'm taking it back tomorrow.

I bought this detector to replace an ancient Whistler 1490 that was beginning to show it's age, it served me well for 10 years, but it was falsing more often now, so it was time for a new detector

I took a chance on the XRS-9485, big mistake, it failed on it's first real test

On the drive in to work the next day, I had both the Whistler and the Cobra hooked up, the Whistler alerted to a weak Ka signal about 1/4 mile ahead, the Cobra, silent, I approached an intersection and turned right, Whistler showing a strong alert (4-5 bars), Cobra, nothing, as I turned into the intersection and decended the hill, the Whistler was on full alert, as coming up the hill was a local cruiser driving in the opposite lane with his Ka band radar on the constant on setting

the Cobra, silent

the cruiser passed me, heading in the opposite direction, as soon as the cruiser passed my rear bumper, the Cobra emitted two weak, halfhearted "Braps", a voice alert, and fell silent

the Whistler's alert was at 3 bars and falling....

I was not speeding in this encounter, I was simply driving the posted limit, and trying to get a feel for the effectiveness (or total lack thereof) of this detector.

the Cobra was a complete and utter failure, it was returned that evening, and I purchased a Escort Passport 8500-X50 at a different retailer, which has worked flawlessly and easily outperforms the Whistler

Yes, it's possible I may have recieved a defective Cobra, but it's abyssmal performance did not fill me with confidence, the alert tones are quiet, even on highest volume setting, and the voice alerts are irritating and distracting

I DO NOT reccomend this detector at all, if I could give it zero stars, I would, heck, it deserves *negative* stars for it's complete and utter failure to fulfill it's most basic function, to *detect* radar
