I have had the unit for a little over a year and about 2 months ago I noticed that the display screen even on the bright setting can hardly be seen anymore. I have tried to adjust with no luck. Can't see a stupid thing.
Radar detector works great. It has a long radar and has been useful for interstate driving. The EV Alert works great. I have seen some bad reviews but if you are using it to run 100 mph, you should be ticketed.
IVE HAD MINE FOR 16 MONTHS....WORKS GREAT!! fORTUNATELY, (i GUESS) when I got the first one...the compass would't work and it had problems. I brought it back and swapped it for a new one and has worked PERFECTLY since. I drive 45k+ a year and IT WORKS (as I break land/speed records...LOL)
This radar is purley trashy I have purchased 2 diffrent cobra models and they are a piece of junk. The first time I got stopped with the radar dector the second time I took the thing back because it goes off when you can see the polic for yourself

2 days after I bought it I got pulled for speeding. Didn't get an alert until I was right at the officers car. Also alerts of oncoming trains in [...] parking lot. There wasn't even tracks within 100 miles.
Bought this for the safety alert feature. After tons of driving and testing I've determined this unit is junk. For all those that believe this thing saves you, consider this... My friend who is a police officer pulled out his K band radar, a Laser gun and his trusty roof-top opticom emitter and we ran our own tests. The K takes 2 seconds after emitting to be picked up. From 200ft away the signal level is 1/5, and if you are behind a vehicle, forget it. The pop mode on this gun fails to trigger the pop detection 9/10 times. in either case on K band the radar already had the vehicle speed 2 to 3 seconds before this detector even alerted. Next we tested laser, it never went off, EVER, on several tests, even holding it 3 inches from the windshield in plain view of the detector it would not alert. As for the safety alert, we turned on the opticom facing the vehicle at several distances, nope, no alert. Buy this thing if you like the compass, thats about it.

When i was going to buy the radar detector i came to this website and read all the other reviews. They make this radar detector seem like it is useless. But i have had the radar for about a month now and i think it is great. It alerts you a couple seconds before you can see the cop and fast enough. The thing is with this radar is that if a cop is just cruisin without his radar on and not paying attention to the cars around him, the radar detector wont go off, but when your speeding down the highway it deffianatly picks it up.

I really like this Radar Detector. The intelli alert stops the beeping when the vehicle come to a stop and restarts after about 800 rpm.
Nice design. Lots of bells and whistles. Most of all, very functional.
Would buy again.

Cobra has a bad practice of adding features but not improving the detector itself. By next year, I am sure Cobra will have a detector that makes you a Slurpee while you drive. But chances are underneath it all it will have poor detection sensitivity like always. Buy a detector because it works, not because it looks cool. The only really worthwhile model here is the Bel Vector 995. It's a shame [...] doesn't yet offer the new Whistler XTR690 or a low end Bel. They would be ten ten times better than this noisemaker.
I've had this model probably about a year. After six months it stopped alerting and false alarming. Nothing, Nata. I sent it back to Cobra and they sent me back a brand new one. Six months down the road, guess what? It false alarms, but does not go off when a police radar is in use. I verified this by running another older model Cobra next to this past weekend. Went by a police car radaring and the old one went off and 9985 did nothing. I'm going to call Cobra again and see if they will send me another model, why would I want another dud. If they will only send me back the same model, I will turn around and re-sell it. It may be past the Manuf. Warranty so I may Be SOL. I just won't buy another Cobra. Don't buy this model!!!
I wouldn't trust this thing, it is fairly unreliable. Sometimes it would alert very far away, but sometimes not. For instance, last night I got a 305 dollar ticket on I-95 on flat ground, not in a corner. The cop was facing me so it should have alerted very far away but only gave a split second for me to react.
The best radar I have ever had! The XRS 9985, features ways for adjustment towards false readings. Distance of detection is the best every experienced. This is my 5th radar and this is the best. it is worth the price
By far the worst detector ever!!! Your better off with a low end Bel or whistler. Take it from me, any cobra is a bad cobra.
I am a radar detector fanatic and i ca tell you this is not a good model. No cobra is good but this one is so expensive and it is bad. I will say the display is nice but that's it if you want a good detectos look at the high end detectors from beltronics. Also check out the valentine 1 and the escort x50. I use a beltronics RX65 i i think RS can order it for you if you like in my opinion it is the best detector in the world. OH and to give you some perspective if one of those top detectors alerts 1.5 miles away this cobra will likely alert about 600 yards (max).
seems to work great,but every website that rates radar detectors say cobra is the worst out there.....i guess we will see....
I had this product the day RadioShack release it. It has saved me from many tickets. I have tried other products out there. This one is well worth the money! I feel at time this product should of be higher in price as much as it saved me on the road. Take it from me this Radar detector is well worth the money!
I've only had this radar detector 2 days, but so far it seems very reliable. It took me couple of tries to get the compass set correctly. I like the power saver feature. I also like the Intellimute feature. I'll probably submit another review after I've used it longer.
