This Is Reliable; I'm Very Happy

I picked Tom Tom because it had the LEAST number of bad reviews, and I wanted to pay a little more to get above the cheapest models which gave users the poorest performance.

My standard had been Magellan, after first using it in a rental car back in the 1990s, but poor reviews have changed my mind about the Magellan models (at least for the lower end units).

I think you can't go wrong with this Tom Tom series. This model is well-made and easy to set up. I was using this literally right out of the box. I opened it in the parking lot and drove from Daytona Beach to Jacksonville (Florida) without any problems.

The maps are up-to-date and you get a year of free Tom Tom updates and probably forever use of the user-fixed maps, which you update by linking to your Internet-connected PC via the included USB cable.

You can customize voices, map colors, points-of-interest, etc.

I don't know how to tell where the battery indicator is, but I keep it plugged in to the cigarette lighter, so haven't had to worry about battery life yet.

I did notice a few communities where the map is missing entire streets, but the GPS was straight-on and accurate. I thought that was a strange disconnect, but that is probably the point of the useful user-input capability of the Tom Tom community: you can fix the maps and upload changes for others to benefit from. I imagine mapping is a tall order, considering the many changes (new streets, new neighborhoods, road renovations, etc.) that take place in the US daily. It also has a useful browse function to let you use the device the way you would use a paper map.

I recommend this unit. It doesn't do street-by-street announcements, but I decided I would find that pretty annoying after awhile, so didn't bother to look for that feature in my choices. The colors are bright (ans there's a great night-view feature, too), the sound is excellent (and you can set it to change volume with acceleration), and it reroutes you immediately if you take a wrong turn.

The screen is clear but smudges easily. I use the eraser end of a pencil tap the screen: that keeps it clean for me.

i go on trips every weekend and the tomtom is a good thing to have but also very confusing. there are a lot of freeways where i go and i always end up on the wrong one because tomtom is so slow recieving signal. so everytime i go somewhere i always go freeway and end up on street to get back on freeway. also the places i want to go are franchises and what would you know that after all the updating there is no place on the maps. so i have to find the address to type it in and then have tomtom navigate me on a blank map. i dont know if i am not updating right or what but i am always a very lost driver. i do like the tomtom because it has a sense of direction but not always reliable. also the one thing i am not sure anyone has had this problem but the heat in my car fried the sound so i always have to look at tomtom so thats why i get lost easier too. i felt real bad because i purchases all the voices and now mr. t cants tell me where to go. lol. its a good product but maybe the new model will have less bugs.

This is a good GPS unit that gets you from point A to point B with reasonably good accuracy. Wish the battery life was longer, but the car charger makes it tolerable. Used the TomTom One on a trip through Pennsylvania in areas that I was unfamiliar with and it got me where I needed to be every time. Had a minor problem with first starting up the unit out of the box, but hitting the reset button and downloading the software update solved the problem. Goodbye Mapquest.

I purchased this for 2 trips cross country from San Francisco to Minneapolis ( in late Dec / home for X-Mass and in early Jan -- just wanted the added security of knowing where in the hell we where, especially in snow through the Sierras & at night) and later one trip in early March to Yellowknife NWT - CANADA. It had most of the roads / not all, but it had the main roads we where on. It is just GREAT ! Giving miles to our next Motel / est time to arrival. We could then cross check that with how much fuel we had left and when we needed to re-fuel. The WEST is BIG, but going 2,200 miles due North is no small feat. Our 2005 AWD FORD Freestyle is an absolute champ. The unit had to recalibrate ( lost some of the 12? satelite signals, especially above the 60th parallel), but it did find us within a minute max. This is a fantastic value, the $2,000 unit in my Buick Lucerne CXS is not that much better. I think I'll skip the factory unit next time a buy a car, what a rip off !

Bought this a week ago to take on a trip. The basic functions work okay, but the windshield mount was terrible. Hard to keep stuck to the window. Plus, it was virtually impossible to take the unit out of the "cradle" without taking the entire assembly off the windshield. Also, the lack of an auto day/night function mode was very annoying.

I bought the Tom Tom because I thought they were supposed to be "the best." Just took it back and exchanged it for the Garmin Nuvi 200, and it is WORLDS better. Spend a little more and get a better unit.

I,m thinking of getting one for my father-in-law and he is technically challenged.

I like the capability of being able to update the maps, but so far I haven't been able to figure it out. This is a great unit at a great price.

It's maps are very clear and the device is very easy to input directions. It has tons of POIs (which come in handy surprisingly more than one would think). It's batter life is a little short but if you keep it plugged in on long trips everything is great. I love this device.

I used it to find about a dozen destinations. 3 or 4 it brougt me almost right to the door. 2 Were not on the map. 2 or 3 were within a block. 2 were on the wrong side of the street. 2 were more than a block but less than 1 mile off. And one brought me down a mud farm tractor road through a cow pasture when there was a perfectly good paved road one turn down.

Pros: I was impressed by the clarity of the screen.
Had no problems with screen lag.
Directions updated quickly.

Cons: Street addresses were way off.
Didn't always give the best rout. - Like haveing me drive all the way around a the back side of a huge shopping center and through the back truck entrance.
POI's are very incomplete. Sitting less than a block from McDonalds. Find the nearest McDonalds. It has us drive by the closest one a go 8 miles down the road.
Lots of U turns built into the rout.

Battery Life, Battery Life, Battery Life!!!!
Needs a 4-6 hour battery for long trips without
having to plug into car while traveling. Also the charging light should change colors when device is
fully charged, example- from red to green. The quick start book should tell you how long to charge unit before using. Had a minor problem downloading applications at first, device wouldn't turn on until downloaded for second time.
Other than that, device is more accurate than my
handheld when approaching roads and passing them and other interest points. So far so good!

I have a Tom Tom One 3rd edition GPS, which I got at Radio Shack. The GOOD: It got a satellite signal quickly. Compact, easy mounting. Easy menus, choice of voices. Seemed to have POI's (Points of Interest) that were useful. Price was good too. It doesn't speak the name of the streets, and that's a good thing. If you're in a place you've never been, you won't be familiar where "1234 XXXXX Street" is! Instead, it tells you, 'turn left in 200 ft." It really cuts down on making wrong turns. The BAD: The routes it gave me to certain destinations weren't very good. For example, for two separate test locations (Starbucks and the Bank), it gave me very roundabout routes. And I live in the city. Also, the Tom Tom One does not support Mac OSX. One thing I hated was that it had no AC Adapter, only a car charger and a USB cable, unlike other GPS products. And for some reason, even though I charge my TomTom for hours, the battery icon never says it's fully charged. The VERY BAD:When I power off my Tom Tom One and try to turn it back on, I got the BLANK WHITE SCREEN. ([...], it's a problem many users have.) The only thing you can do is a soft reset...EVERY time. Very annoying. Resetting cuts out my signal for about 5 minutes, and it wipes out my clock. Also, it didn't even know what my street name was. It always says, "Unnamed street,' which I find odd for an old street in the middle of L.A. (Haven't had a chance to update the maps, but hopefully that will fix it.)If I were buying a new GPS, I'd try the Garmin Nuvi series.

This device worked right out of the box. I bought it, opened it in the car, plugged it in and put in my next destination. Flawless... or so I thought. I was happy with it until I tried to turn it on the second, third and fourth time. All I get is a white screen so I have to hit the reset button then the power button. I find this to be very annoying. I have had it for two days and plan to return it today.

Have had two units and multiple problems - 1st maps were erased fromSD card - tech support assisted (two hrs of work) Next unit was sent to be refurbished because the SD card and the unit crashed (several weeks w/o unit) - Some hrs with tech support to get RMA #. Received unit w/o SD SD Card. More tech support. Second unit working great for a few weeks. then same problem. Bottom line do not connect to computer for upgrades. System will make it crash.

I just purchased TomTom for my trip to Canada. Before I used to use Verizon Wireless and was very happy with the easy to use system, but sometime it fail to work in Oklahoma or certain parts of country and it will not function in Canada. TomTom works great so far and I'm really pleased with simple function on touch screen menu. Great for work and families. No complicated option to consider and great for first time users. I would rate this product 4 star for the price I paid and convenience of no monthly fee like my verizon $9.95 per month.

Be sure to update the map from the Tom Tom website before using. Mine needed an update right out of the box. Also updated POIs and voices. The map update corrected a mapped road that had been blocked and rerouted two years ago. Editing out blocked roads and recent road changes on the GPS map was more difficult than I want to admit to. The lack of many POIs is the most disappointing feature of this otherwise sleek little GPS. If possible map out all trips before departing and check the routing using the "Demo" against a good road map. There is margin for error here but it's fun to use and worth [$]

Prior to my TomTom One 3rd edition GPS purchase I researched as many GPS units as I able. All of my co-workers own the Garmin products, most being the Nuvi 680. I chose the entry level TomTom for many six important reasons. First, this unit's main purpose is a digital map that replaces my trusty ATLAS. Second, the TomTom is highly upgradeable with new features, maps, and comedic voices. I chose not to purchase the higher TomTom 920 because it loses text to speech when the down loaded voices are engaged (my favorite is Navtones "Candy"?.what a hottie!). Third, the 3.5" screen that takes less room on my windshield. Fourth, the mounting system is the best of all GPS units (this would count in a collision). Fifth, I was afraid to purchase a unit with too many bells & whistles because I would become distracted trying to operate the features instead of concentrating on the road. [...] I give this fully loaded high quality unit my highest recommendation.

This is a great device! The maps are accurate and dependable. I wouldn't want to go anywhere without it. Maps are the most important aspect of a GPS system and TeleAtlas makes me feel secure. I love the features of the unit and the POIs are a dream!

I bought Mio C320 and Tomtom one 3rd edition from RadioShack, and C220 from Circuit City.Overall of Mio C320 and C220:Great units! Highly recommended! Maps like FINE ARTS with just adequate roads and texts. Easy to use. I can easily set my new routes while I am driving. Two great and very easy to-use features while driving: tap on the screen to overview the big area around you and tap back to normal, and put your finger on the map to move it around. They are very helpful when the traffic slows down and you need to find an alternative route.Compare Mio C320 with C220:Mio C320: Wide screen, means more info on the screen and less chance to tap the wrong spot when you working on the touch screen.Mio C220: The speed of your car is displayed only when you drive freely without setting a route.Overall of Tomtom One 3rd Edition:Not recommended. Maps look awful after you are spoiled with Mio?s fine-arts maps. Difficult to use. You can?t tap on the screen to overview the map and you need to flip a few pages until you can move the map.

I use this unit finding my way to and from gigs. I've had it less than a week and I really enjoy it, despite some inaccuracies. One time it announced "you have reached your destination" when there was nothing around me. Other times its ben right on. Great value for the sale price at [...]! Ready to go right out of the box, too. I know there are much nicer units out there, but for my needs and purposes this one does the job. I was really curious about GPS and this seems to be a pretty decent entry-level choice - but I'm also pretty sure I'll upgrade as prices continue to drop.

This is a great device for anyone looking for an entry level GPS. The ONE 3rd edition is very accurate and comes preloaded with the latest and most up to date maps. It also has the new Map Share and Help me features. I've used other gps devices before, but the 3rd edition is the most user friendly. After you input your destination the ONE does the rest and calculates your route in no time. Its voice commands are accurate and clear. I would definitely suggest this device to a friend.

I bought this item and within 15 minutes of using i realized that the POI (points of interest) really lacks on this unit. As i use my old Garmin iQue wherever i go, i like to be able to find Grocery stores and Department stores, Mainly Nordstrom, and this item has none. No Ralphs, Vons, Albertsones and so on, so if you are looking for a GPS that you can just enter an address and go to it, then this will work great, but if you need something more then that, look to buy something else, i'll suggest a Garmin!

Map share is great. I must have used it about 20 times in the past 3 days correcting the POI's and some streets. I have used the Garmin, Mio, and Magellan and this unit is the worst of the bunch. You would think that a [...] that has been around for about 20 years in the same place would be in the right place on the map, but its not. One other thing that is bad. To cancel a route you have to go two screens down to find it. This unit will be returned.

Great unit! This is my first GPS and I'm blown away with the TomTom One. VERY easy to use and set-up right out of the box. The voice is the clearest and loudest of all the GPSs in it's price range. Maps are easy to read and the interface is smooth with no lag to it at all. Menus are the best by far. No bluetooth nor does is have a large 4 or 4.3In. screen but that is not a big hang up. Very good choice in GPS.
