This unit fixes on satalites very fast even indoors. The maps are very accurate. The warn if speeding option and warn when near point of interest is great. The ability to save iteneraries is a great time saver. You can add you own or download many additional Points Of Interest. You can customize just about everything on the unit. The unit firmware and maps as well as mapfixes can be updated through USB connection to your computer and all necessary cables and software is included. A large PLUS for this unit is the option of free third party software to create inineraries and customize your unit. With bluetooth phone you can get realtime traffic info. I love the unit and I do not leave home without it.

I have had this for six months and it is a waste of money. The screen has a terrible glare on it and you cannot see it in the daylight. The windshield bracket keeps falling off of the windshield in the heat and the night to day process does not work. The instructions tell you how to turn it on, but the function is not in the menu. Cannot tell about battery life because there is no battery indicator. I e-mailed Tom Tom and asked about the issues and they refuse to respond. What does that say about customer service! I bought this to replace a MIO C330 since it sucks and the Mio is better.

I've used it for a month and can't imagine being without it. I haven't used any competing products, so I can't compare. It simply works. I don't give it five stars because there are some errors in the maps. I've compared these to Google maps, and most of them seem to match what Google has. They involve changes to streets and unusual intersections that can't be navigated by car.

It would be nice if you could make corrections that would "permanently" change the way it plans routes. It does allow you to find an alternate route that doesn't use blocked streets, but the correction isn't considered the next time you plan a route.

This may sound like a negative review, but it isn't. The map errors show up on printed maps of my area. I found them because I went looking for them.

I particularly like the speed with which it recalculates a route if you miss a turn or take a route other than the one it chooses. It isn't perfect, but it doesn't get you lost. And it bails you out if you are lost.

I love everything about this product. I actually bought a Magellan Maestro 3100 series, Before this Tomtom xl. My advice to all those who have a Magellan Maestro 3100, return it as soon as possible. That product really sucks........... It froze on me, click on avoided tolls and still took the toll route, driving and the whole map went black and just left me and arrow! to see with.(thanks to my stupid magellan I got lost). Please i only owned the MAGELLAN for three weeks, before i took back to [...] and upgraded for the (Tomtom xl), THANKS FROM THE ADVICE FROM MY GOOD BUDDY ARCH...THANKS. pLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THAT MAGELLAN PIECE OF JUNK. (SPEND THE EXTRA [$]AND HAVE PIECE OF MIND!)

I've been using the XL for a few months now and had great success with this product. Its always accurate and gets me where I need to go. I've used it on long road trips and short ones and the device always works well. What I love most about it is how easy it is to use. I've let friends borrow it before and they have no trouble figuring out how to use it. I especially like using the XL in the city, because it always knows the fastest route. It also comes in handy when I'm in unfamiliar areas and need directions. You never know when this device will be needed, but when your lost, it never lets you down. I would definitely recommend this unit to a friend. I'm planning on getting one for my navigationally challenged mother for Christmas ;-)

Although it may at times deliver you a few hundred yards from your destination, this is more a satellite function than a TomTom problem. This will even happen on the GPS system on my boat occasionally. Plus, I had the same issue with my Magellan which, overall, performed far less reliably.
If you haven't used it in a while, satellite acquisition can be slow, but, if you use it frequently it picks them up very quickly.
95% of the time the accuracy is incredible, within feet of the destination.
I love the "walking" feature as I go to Boston frequently and have always gotten lost walking the back streets in the North End. Now I just put it in my shirt pocket and it delivers me to the door of my destination.
My only regret is that I can't synk my Treo cellphone. It will link via Bluetooth with most other phones but mine is not on the list.
It delivered me to Missoula, MT form RI flawlessly, right to my daughter's doorstep!
Overall, I highly recommned this system

Tom-Tom thinks my brother-in-law lives 400 yrds past his house. It also thinks I live across the street (other side). It will say to make left turn, when there is no turn. It will take you on a route off the HWY, onto a country road. Unit is being returned for a refund [...].Garmin StreetPilot is great,,, if you don't go any where or use it. Garmin c330 does know where anybody lives, or even the name of some streets. If you put-in a address, it will take you to someones house, but not the one you were looking for. Called Garmin head office, not even they could pull-up my brother-in-laws house on their GPS system. I returned it also. Magellan is going to be the way to go.

I bought this unit and tested a few routes that I'm very familiar with. The results were disappointing. First, it frequently choose roads that no longer exist. It also will instruct you to make a right and then a u-turn where you could have just made a legal left. It has a delay response which creates confusion. It will show your present location as you drive and as you turn onto exits or entrances on highways your position on the units screen will be inaccurate. For example, if you make a right turn the gps will show you still continuing straight and that you have missed your turn, then it will recalculate route as if you missed your turn. This even worsened when you are on highways that have an overhead highway. Also, when you set the zoom level to your liking it will automatically revert back to a small view. The mount is horrible. If you leave the mount in your vehicle by itself without the gps attached, it will dis-engaged in hot weather. So, imagine if the gps was connected. I am a highway officer and I can't afford to get lost. This unit has too many downside for the price and the battery level is only good for about an hour and twenty minutes. I have done some research and found out that tom tom has used another company for the maps and it has been noted that the company's maps are off. [...] If you like tom tom I think it's a better decision to purchase the one and not the one xl, because you not gaining anything but a larger screen. Tom Tom's original maps are better. However, they don't have as many POI's.

I will be returning my ...
By Elio G from weschester, NY on 6/22/2007

I will be returning my new TomTom XL today. I can see the complaints people have about the wrong mapping information. The unit took me 2 hours out of the way from jersey city, NJ to westchester, NY yesterday. It also hit some sort of issue when i was route planning last night that I could not get it to calculate the route. I had to reboot with a reset. I have purchased the Magellan 4040 in place of this unit and so far the Magellan seems to have better maps and POI's. Also the Megallan seems to give you more information about where you are and also has built in Bluetooth speakerphone which works really well. The unit is on sale now and also you get a $50 RS rebate so the whole thing comes out to $399 which is the same price as the TomTom. I like the TomTom interface and ease of use but it does not give you the correct routes from what I learned. They need to do some work on this product before.

By Terry D from Maryland on 6/11/2007

I have been very pleased with the ONE XL after getting it over a week ago. I have found it to be very reliable and always gets me to my destination. It came ready to use right out of the box and was very easy to use. The XL was preloaded with the latest Tele Atlas maps and is incredibly accurate. The battery was actually fully charged too! I recently used it on a road trip to Philadelphia where it's POI's came in handy several times. You can go wrong with the XL!
