Comments about Mio Mio™ Knight Rider™ GPS Portable Navigation Device:

I've had the unit for about a week now, and for the most part it's a good unit. I love the fact that you can get a route mapped out using only a street name, an intersection, or even just a zip code (in the latter case it will route you to the center of the zip code's geographic area).
You can also pick from several different color schemes for the display. Displays are crisp and offer a choice between 2D and 3D. One complaint about the 2D: Some major roads disappear from the display too early as you zoom out.
The main reason most people will purchase this unit is because of the KITT voice. William Daniels recorded a number of phrases for the unit. You can even pick from among 300 or so first names with which "KITT" can greet you. However, if you do choose the Kitt voice, you won't get actual street names when it routes you. Instead you can expect things like "Turn left in 350 feet." That can get a little confusing in densely built subdivions and you end up having to watch the 3D map much more closely for guidance. Not good if you're also driving.
Given the price of the unit compared to other units with similar features, it's apparent that you're paying a major premium for that voice. Too bad it also limits the unit's abilities.
There are a quite a few other voices available from the Mio website. Those are synthesized and will give you street names as part of the turn-by-turn directions. On the other hand, that also largely defeats the purpose of having a Knight Rider GPS.
Aside from the whole KITT voice thing, what prompted me to buy this unit was the available traffic module available on Mio's website. It plugs into the USB port on the bottom that normally takes the AC adapter cord. Then the power cord plugs into the other end of that. A separate thin wire then plugs into the module, and you have to run that across the dash and along the windshield.
The traffic service is provided by an outfit called TMC, and they are next to worthless. They supposedly cover the DC area, but as it turns out, their coverage of Northern Virginia is very limited. You start losing the traffic updates about five or six miles outside of the Capital Beltway. Given this area's sprawl, that's a severe limitation.
Also, looking at the display, it's impossible to immediately tell which direction is backed up on an interstate. You have to zoom down to a level where you're looking at less than a two mile section of highway before you can differentiate between the east bound and west bound lanes. There are little tiny arrows that are supposed to do that for you, but they sometimes conflict with one another. Very confusing.
I don't know about the other traffic services out there, but the one provided by TMC is next to worthless.
Even worse, when I called Mio to return the module, I was told that once it is activated, it can NOT be returned. I tried to point out that I had ordered the item in good faith expecting a quality product, but they wouldn't take it back
Also, some other reviews I had read complained about the out of date maps. One review, however, said that Mio will provide a free 2009 map update when it becomes available.
When I tried to sign up for it on their website, I discovered that the offer had expired on January 20, 2009. It let me sign up for the offer, but the next day I got an email telling me I wasn't eligible because I had purchased the unit on January 26.

It shows my home address as being about seven house numbers away from where it really is. Vendor says they 'calculate' your address by estimating size of lots.
Maps don't seem to have been updated for Michigan's Upper Penninsula for a few years.
Really could use a 'save current location' option. Not a bad device, but does have these shortcomings.

You have to really use this product in order to appreciate it.
The battery life problem is only when you have all the features in use. If you turn down the brightness and shut off the kitt lights a full charge will last longer. I charged my MIO yesterday left it on sleep and have been using it off and on since then. When I checked last it still had 74% left. When I use the brightest screen and all the functions on it lasts about 3 hours.
I love the 3D mode where it shows you the Mcdonalds signs, Wendy's signs, and even the Subway sandwich signs. I found so many other activities, and businesses in my own neighbor hood that I did not even know was there.

When I program an address once I reach it, I look out the window the exact house number is there right in front of me.
I looked up a resteraunt got the # called them ordered my food and picked it up when I got down the road to them later.
My partner calls my system my new girl she takes care of me real good he says.

Comments about Mio Mio™ Knight Rider™ GPS Portable Navigation Device:

After many months of enjoying this GPS unit, I thought I would add more to my first review and also clear up some inconsistencies with some of the other reviews.

First off, let me say that before this Knight Rider Mio I thought that Garmin was the unit to have. I will say confidently now that this Mio unit blows most Garmin's off the road.
I used a Garmin c330 for 2 years prior to my Mio and really reveled in the ease of use of the menus and inputs. I really didn't think it could get any better. Yet, Mio takes what Garmin did and makes it better with more easily navigatable menus.
The detail of the onscreen map is unbelievable. On confusing intersections with medians and turn-arounds the display will show you direction of travel arrows on each roadway so you don't get confused and start going the wrong way down a one-way street.
The POI's are also quite awesome as you can just touch the icon on the screen and all info including phone number for that POI comes up instantly.
As one reviewer said, he didn't think the charger port was placed correctly. I think it was perfect! To hook up the charger correctly you have to slide it into the cradle where there is a notch at the bottom, thus allowing you to easily put the GPS unit onto or off of the cradle with one handed ease. I stay away from GPS units that hook directly into the unit as they are a pain to store for security, having to take the unit off the cradle and then detach the charger..ugh.
I work at another electronic retailer and I hate that I have to sell inferior units to people, only wishing that we carried the Knight Rider Mio so they could get a unit that will take them farther than they could imagine.

I generally use this product for personal use. This is the first time that I have purchased a GPS system. I like the voice command, but it does not have the correct location of my Home location. I'm not sure how I am able to correct this little problem. So far this system is very reliable except the little glitch noted.

I bought this because I get lost at times. I am a big fan of Knight Rider also. Yes the other GPS units are nice and less expensive, but this one is more personal because it calls you name. Very easy to control. This unit even tells you that you are exceeding the speed limit if you set it up to tell you. Get one and see all the features it has. Worth every penny of the money.

Comments about Mio Mio™ Knight Rider™ GPS Portable Navigation Device:

This unit delivers exactly what it promises on! The voice is a good as can be expected from the tiny speak and the directions get you where you are going. I have tried it on several routes that I knew already and found that the options to go fastest or shortest distance and to avoid freeways are good and gave me some very creative (yet accurate) new routes to my destination.

Contrary to what you may have read or seen this device DOES have text-to-speech loaded into it but not using the KITT voice. There are several default voices that have the TTS option. Still haven't tried them yet.

All I know is that for my first in-car unit this one has not disappointed! There may be better devices available right now but none are more fun!

Comments about Mio Mio™ Knight Rider™ GPS Portable Navigation Device:

Well I have been Knight Rider fan since the 80's tv show. I just wish they would have used the plug to charge it on the side rather than the bottom. I have to keep taking it out of the holder and plug in the charger in the back. Also wish it came with wall charger but it didn't. Finding POIs was not as easy to search as a cheaper unit I have. I could search different types of restaurants I wanted. Besides these things My name is not on the list so have to pick closest one. I still enjoy KITT voice and wish you could download more names to it. Directions it gives good, calculates good, had some problem getting it to pick up satellite signal in the beginning but fine now. I am going to take some more trips with it and find out if I enjoy it as much as I thought I would

Comments about Mio Mio™ Knight Rider™ GPS Portable Navigation Device:

Let me start off by saying that I love this GPS. Especially when this thing greets you. Thankfully, my name is one of the 300 on the list. This GPS is just like all the others out there except with KITT on it. So if you love knight rider as a kid or young adult, go get this thing!

The cons: My home address on the GPS is totally wrong on this thing. I live on the corner of 18th street, but on the GPS it shows me closer to 17th street. Most addresses are like this and I hope they correct it soon.

The voice of kitt needs to be corrected a bit. The pitch is a bit too deep for me, but isn't really that noticeable. I understand that the voice actor (William Daniela) is 81 years old now, but it isnt hard to correct the pitch amd make it sound more like it did when he was on the show.

Another thing that got to me was that Mio has not updated this GPS for TMC. They say it will be available in a future update. That means I have to update my GPS via the internet, just don't know when. I hate getting stuck in traffic and I wish I could see where there are accidents, roadwork, etc. so that I could take a diff route. Just have to wait I guess.

Comments about Mio Mio™ Knight Rider™ GPS Portable Navigation Device:

I got my KR GPS last Friday, 9/19.

I've been enjoying it all weekend! I don't care what some say but if you were ever a fan of the TV show, then this is a must have. Not only is it a really good gps (on par with my Garmin in ease of use and function) but it is just plain awesome for the fact that you are being guided around by the one and only KITT.
*William Daniels* "in one-quarter of a mile, perform a U-turn"

I would be just driving around and input my home location for navigation just to listen to KITT tell me where to go and watch the LED's on the unit modulate with his voice exactly like in the show.

Many have said that the exterior detail of the unit was not designed correctly. As in it should have been done to represent KITT's dash rather than taking cues from KITT's exterior, I'm glad they did it this way. Using cues from the interior of KITT would have been over the top and the gloss black face with red LED's are simple enough to keep the unit "up-to-date" in appearance. In fact, I think its one of the best looking GPS's on the market.

One feature I like is the storing of locations that you stop at in the memory of the unit. I went to a friends house while the unit was powered up but I did not have the unit navigating me there. Yet later that day I checked my "Recent" navigations and his address was there. Very neat.

Setting the Greeting name is just the icing on the cake and adds the best personal touch to this GPS.

5 stars for the Knight Rider GPS
