Absolutely Flawless

Pros:
Cheap and does the job, Includes USB Cable, Lightweight, Multi-use, Portable, Reliable
Cons:
Uses USB Cable
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This device is perfect. It's lightweight, super-fast in reading/writing SD cards, and it's darn sturdy too. The only (minor) annoyance is the USB cable, but it's short enough to not get you tangled. Buy this if you own ANY SD cards. It's a must have.

I bought this product to transfer photos from my PC onto my phone. Right out of the box I pop it in everything seems to go fine I go to copy a file onto the disk and it says it's write protected.... I check the little ram chip it's not write protected, so just to try it I actually write protect the chip just to try it, same thing and expected this time. I remove the write protect on the chip and pop it in again and it's write protected still when clearly it is not. I reboot my system, I try it again, same problem. I try a different ram chip from another phone and again same problem. Sorry but in all honesty I have to give it the worst rating I can some of these aparently or maybe a certain batch of this product was sent out defective due to the previous reviews that I see having the same problem.

I bought this product so I could transfer MP3s onto SD cards for use with my MP3 player. It worked great during the first week of use. It has been sitting on my desk undisturbed as I haven't used it in over a month. Now it does not work at all. The power LED illuminates (Barely) but the device and cards are not recognized by the computer. This seems to be a recurring phenomenon of products working fine until after the last day to return them.

I use a MicroSD card that i bought and it came with the adapter, so i went out to buy this, and at first very confused on how it went in, but didnt take long to figure it out, other than that it works great. uses of USB 2.0 and backwards to 1.1 is excellent.

Works

Pros:
Convenient Interface, Lightweight, Reads 2 GB Cards, Reads SD Cards, Reliable, Strong Construction
Best Uses:
Digital Capture, Digital Photography, Image Storage, Image Transportation
Describe Yourself:
Hobbyist/Enthusiast

This card reader works with my mini SD card which plugs into a mini SD card adapter. No special drivers for windows XP. Works out of the box. Will read my 2 GB cards. This reader showed respectable speed on a batch of test files: An older USB 1.1 reader took 18 to 20 minutes to write files. The same transfer with this card reader took 3 or 4 minutes. This card reader would not work for me if I inserted more than one card in it at the same time. (So, I use one card at a time.) The aggresive bad-mouthing of this product seems out of place to me. If interested, suggest you try it yourself. If it doesn't work for your configuration, bring it back to Radio Shack and get what works for you.

Get Win98 driver; No microdrive, SM.

Actually, the Targus model number is TRG-CRD25. Make sure all USB-related updates are installed for Mac and Windows OS. Able to write and delete files with MacOS 10.4.9 and Windows XP sp2. Works with SDHC and transflash. Needs the adapter for microSD and miniSD, but usually is included with the card for free. Does not take microdrives or SM, but SM is rare nowadays and don't use microdrives-- they're flaky. The manual is wrong. To get the Windows 98 driver, go to http://www.targusdigital.com/Sub_Support.asp#

Works fine and pretty compact. The only thing I can recomend, is when your using it right click on it in my computer and hit eject. It will resort to the reader after that. Then unplug it and then take out the card and put in another. Then plug it back in to the USB cable. Made it work with no problems. This should be inclosed in some kind of instructions.

I've owned a lot of digital cameras but never put camera software on my machine for a camera that supports removable media. I use a memory-card reader to get my images onto my computer. I bought a new camera that supports SD cards and needed a new card reader for this format. The Targus was on sale for less than [$]so I bought it. It works great! It installed on my XP laptop without drivers. I was able to download a driver to install it on an old desktop with Windows-98SE. I use it to transfer files between cards and between machines. I like being able to drag files from the card in one slot to a card in a different slot without having to put the files on the computer first. If they go on sale again I'm buying another just to have a 'spare'

Was afraid to buy this after reading the mixed reviews. Figured I'd give it a try and return it if it didn't work. Worked flawlessly for me -- transferring photos from a digital memory card to my Macintosh. Small and lightweight -- we'll see how well it holds up.

Bought this yesterday [...]5 on sale. Running eMac G4-700 with OS X.4.11. Plug and play, as simple as that. Note that the power light does NOT come on unless card is inserted. Easy, simple, small, versatile, GREAT VALUE!!. Reviewers who have been slamming this product have to be using PCs. If you're running a Mac with OS X, do not be concerned. My only slam is that the card slots are not labeled, but if the card doesn't fit, use another slot!

Most people think everything is just plug and play... even some of those need drivers to work. Concern was that I had to put my sd card into my phone before I could transfer to it.. so the phones files were in the card so it could read my music. PUT THE MEMORY IN YOUR PHONE/PDA FIRST! Otherwise for the price, I paid for what I was expecting.

I have used this reader for 4 months now and it has come in handy several times with varying friends and family memory types. Its simple to use and works flawlessly. Those who see it in action can't believe something so simple looking can do what it actually does. I have a Mac, if that matters. Based on some comments, I think it might.

I kept getting a device I/O error and if and when it felt like it wanted to work, it would freeze my cpu up or only copy some of the files. This thing is a P.O.S. from the word go!

Cannot Add Files To SD Card

Bought this because a Radio Shack salesman said I would be able to transfer files to the SD card (the packaging said Memory Card Reader/Writer).

However, received the same errors others were getting saying that the SD card is write-protected.

Can not delete the files
By rmamila from Columbus, OH on 11/26/2007
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I just bought one and tried to copy a file by plugging a SD card. It worked. Then I tried to delete the file but it says the card is write protected. But it's not. The write protection switch is off. If it was write protected, I should not be able to copy the file in the first place.
I tried with 3 other SD cards. Same issue found. The reader is not having any write protection switch, it's only with the card. However reader is only allowing me to write the files. When I try to delete files then it desn't work. I checked for any help in the internet to see if there is any switch in the device that I can't see. Couldn't find any help. This should be a defect with the reader. I am going to return this tomorrow.

I forgot to bring my card reader on Vacation. So I tried this little Targus 32 in 1 reader.

Even though it says Mac compatible it's not working. (Mac Book Pro) I'm trying to download my compact flash cards but I have had no luck with this thing. For me it's worthless. If your busy, don't try to save a few bucks. Get a better brand name card reader.

I bought this because I was going on vacation and needed to download my pictures to my brother's obsolete computer. It helps me download my numerous memory cards to computers that do not have a media center available. I no longer have to load the camera software on computers. I just plug it in and download pictures. It is light-weigh and small enough to put in my camera bag. Excellent price, too.

By Dave S from Goleta CA on 5/2/2007

Earlier comments seem a little unfair as my manual does not claim to support Smart Media and Radio Shack image shows a square 'gismo' rather than the current (in store) rectangular shape. Which at sale price is great value. Lack of software for W98 users should not be be a problem as W98 is not supported any longer by the manufacturer. Buy a MAC.

By Barbara S from Houston, TX on 4/26/2007

I had to give this card reader the lowest rating possible because of the deceptive labeling. It clearly states on the package and on the enclosed booklet that it supports Smart Media cards but there is no slot for the Smart Media card. I had to return two of them because of this.

By Terry A from Virginia on 1/10/2007

This may be a good reader, but I bought it specifically to use with SmartMedia cards for which there is no card slot...although the package labeling and instructions claim to support SmartMedia cards. Store personnel thought maybe some add-on adapter is needed.

This reader is adequate ...
By Thomas M from Northport, MI on 12/25/2006
Pros:
Good performance, Good Value, Reliable

This reader is adequate for most needs. It does not, however, come with drivers for WIN98, so you must find the driver on their website, which took me quite some time finding (http://www.targusdigital.com/support.html). Also, no manual is available, so one should be comfortable with technology to get this up and running on thier machine, particularly on WIN98. Not a bad deal for the price though.
