If you are going to solder PCBs and small electronic components, this *might* be overkill, especially if you are a beginner. It heats things very quickly and can damage the components or PCB if left in contact too long.
For larger projects where accuracy of heat placement and component sensitivity aren't critical, this is an ideal iron. You can heat larger wires and surfaces quickly - way quicker than with a 15 or 40 watt iron. I use it for soldering EMI shielding, 12 gauge and larger wire, and for "art" projects...
Good quality construction - I have no problem with the tips - they must be kept tinned to work correctly (as with any soldering iron). I have had Weller products for years upon years with no problems. This one seems to be as good as any other.
I have had 2 of these, the first one burned out, kept loosing power and burning tips never consistent. Actually thought I was using it wrong.
Bought a second one, did the same thing and lasted a shorter time. I use it 2 to 3 times weekly approx a one to two hour constant use.
Don't suggest this purchase.
