ok first this is just a plain [*] product. You try to solder with the wire and the wire just goes to the tip of the soldering iron not the thing your soldering.Personally it ticked me off so bad i threw it on the floor and threw it in the sink full of water then shreded the wire. DO NOT GET THIS PRODOUCT!!!!!!!!

For the person just doing the occasional projects, this soldering iron is ideal.

It performs well, and heats to operational temperature within minutes. I was able to complete my project successfully and am pleased with the value of this item.

For[$] dollars and 99 cents it is not bad. I wouldn't mind spending a few more dollars for a better quality one but if you are short on cash then this will do fine. :)

The iron is worthless

The soldering iron that comes with this kit is very low quality. After it heated up, the tip would loosen itself so that whenever I touched the contact or lead, it would move. I tightened it down with a pair of pliers when it was hot and cold to no avail. When it was cold, there was no problem. My guess is that the coupling on the iron expanded more than the iron tip.The tip on my set was a conical tip which is not the best tip to use in most situations. While somewhat versatile, it doesn't heat well. A 1/16 to 1/8 inch screwdriver tip is a better choice. The only up side is that it didn't cost me much and I got a few soldering tools so it wasn't a total loss.I would not recommend this iron to anyone no matter how little knowledge, skill, or use you will have. For about [$], you can get a much better Weller 25W iron kit, or [$] for just the Weller 25W iron. The orange handle Wellers are fine for DIYers, novice, and some hobbyists.

Good Iron, good price
By Dr. MVerified Reviewer from Springfield, OR on 2/27/2008
Pros:
Even heat, High quality
Cons:
Heats up slowly
Best Uses:
Garage, Minor Projects
Describe Yourself:
Do-It-Yourself
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This kit is not for the hard-core electrician. The iron does heat slowly, but other than that, there is even heat, good heat when it gets there, and while the heat sink looks cheap, it works. The stand is also useful. I recommend this set to anyone getting started, or who needs a decent backup--and I also recommend a spool of solder and a desoldering braid and/or bulb.

Soldering iron broke in two days
By Mike, physics student from Atlanta, GA on 2/24/2008
Cons:
Iron broke in two days, Poor quality
Describe Yourself:
Do-It-Yourself
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The soldering iron in this kit is worthless. The tip didn't last more than a day, and when I went to remove it, the set screw holding it in had seized up and broke when I tried to remove it. In the resulting furor, the entire iron broke.

On the plus side, at least I have a couple of extra tools and some solder that this came with, and it didn't set me back much. But don't bother with this. Just spend a little bit more on a quality soldering iron.

Ironically enough, I opened my soldering pencil after months of ownership, and am using it for engraving wood (burning). I'm making a plaque and don't have a dremel. It works fine for that. Now for soldering, it's good stuff. I wish the handle were a bit closer to the tip for better control, but nothing major.

This soldering iron is great. I needed a low power iron so it would not mess up anything around it and it works great and its heating time is not bad. Great Price

I'm surprised to see so ...
By Will G from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA on 3/1/2007

I'm surprised to see so many people liking this. I used this for a while and thought it was okay at the time, but after using a soldering station I got recently I don't like it at all. It takes a long time to heat up, there aren't different tips for it (and the one there is is big for most electronics work). The tools that they include with the iron are fine, nothing special though. I'd say the money would be better spent elsewhere, you could get a much better iron for about the same price. It is nice that they created a kit for beginners, and have enough locations that it's easy to find.

Good kit for the price. The soldering iron takes a bit of time to get hot and heat components. No big deal if you're patient. Otherwise it's working great.

I bought this set because I wanted to learn how to solder and was on a budget. It works well, and I would buy again. Also, you should probabaly buy some extra solder and a desoldering braid.
