I've only used this desoldering syringe once to remove the solder from 12 pre-soldered circuit board holes but it worked great. I placed the tip on the back of the circuit board and heated the holes from the front. Once the solder melted I hit the relase button and it sucked the solder right out. It was critical to get the hole flat against the board to really suck the solder away. I had no problem getting the 12 pin header in place and soldered in after using it.

I only wish the release button could be located closer to the tip. I have large hands but it was still cumbersome to properly hold the tip against the board and press the release button at the same time.

Since the solder is sucked into the tube where the mechanism is located it's probably a good idea to clean it out after each use and put some light oil inside to prevent the plunger and barrel from being scored.

Works okay for removing most solder. Mine broke after 2 months, the same problem that nutz4hs had. I guess the plastic threads tying the top and bottom together can't hold up to the shock from the piston flying back. An all-metal body would have been much better. I'll probably will try and see if I can't superglue it for now.

i used one of these for 2 weeks for small projects. and component harvesting. it does work very well, when it decides to work. mine shattered the threads between the plastic and the metal. i did a temp fix with superglue and electrical tape which held for awhile. bottom line, this is a good tool but expect it to break and to need another. tip.. check sparkfun for replacements, you will be surprised.

Cost effective
By Christopher the NoobVerified Reviewer from Fort Wayne, IN on 4/14/2008
Pros:
Easy to clean, Easy to use, Inexpensive
Cons:
Clean often, Plastic tip
Best Uses:
Garage, Hobbies, Minor Projects
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Best for begginers due to ease of use and price. Needs to be cleaned constantly and the solder sometimes comes out when recocking it. Plastic tip melts so it is a bit of a pain to try and prevent that while sucking up solder.

use a damp sponge

use a damp sponge. this has a plastic tip that melts before the solder does. you have to take it apart after each use to remove the solder. plunge push does not spit the solder out very well. i have used all the radio shack desolders, they all are faulty. i'm using a damp sponge.

By james b from colorado springs on 12/5/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Good performance

this is a nice unit. mine finally broke after 50+ uses. eventually the unit shatters into lots of tiny blue plastic pieces, i often take it completely apart, clean with running water, then apply electrical tape between the internal hammer and the end piece to keep it from hitting it as hard as it does to prolong the life.

By Ben B from Minnesota on 1/25/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Good performance, Good Value, Reliable

This is a very cool tool. The tip will melt and deform over time even with low-heat soldering irons, but it lasts a good while, and it comes with a spare tip. Additional tips are inexpensive. Overall a very useful desoldering tool, and worth the somewhat steep price.
