I Bought this soldering gun yesterday and plugged it in and within 3 mins it was smoking and turning purple. I needed it though so I tried to use it anyway and the thing practically evaporated my solder it didn't just melt it there were actually little clouds of gas coming off of the solder. I am returning it today.

Pros:
Cheap
Cons:
Loses heat quickly, Poor heat control, Slow to heat up
Best Uses:
Light duty soldering, Tiny joints
Describe Yourself:
Designer, Do-It-Yourself, Handyman
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

It takes a long time to get up to the working temperature which is not very hot. It does not hold enough heat to solder on most solid metal surface. If you only work with thin wires and small joints, this tools does the job just fine.

This thing is junk. I had to heat the tip with my portable butane torch to get it hot enough to make one solder joint. I thought it was a gun when I bought it ...not a pencil that doesn't heat.

By Aaron H from Columbus, OH on 3/24/2006
Pros:
Easy to use

A fair beginner tool. Tool took about 30 mins to heat to proper temperature. Tip may warp if left on for too long. I did like the pistol grip handle. It made it easy to work with.
