Very good instument with an analog meter not a digital measuring system which can give errors or false readings if not designed right.
The scales are all there but for more accurate measurments can be done with a scale with more divisions in it. This reading then must be converted to the one your on for example a 500 scale with the pointer at 280 would yeild 280/500 times the full scale that your set to, and that all there saying.
Works right out of the box! and for the quality, and features, the price is amazingly low. I just replaced my 60 year old AMPERPROBE (they cost about $100 now if you can find them) with little sweetheart.
The top screw that holds the adaptor cover is an added bother -- just over-engineering.
An Adapter Cord ("dongle" for you techie-minded folk :-)
For those apparently not understanding how the amp-clamp has to work: To measure a device with a fixed plugin cord, revise a short piece of 14ga or 12ga extension cord so you can conveniently place the amp-clamp around one of the cord's wires. Plug the device into the extension cord, the the extension cord into an outlet, and read the amps on the meter.
I use this to check appliances.
This is a good tool at a great price.
Some of the other 'reviews' are from people who shouldn't be playing with electricity:
Of course you can't measure DC current with the loop...
And if you can't multiply by 10, you really shouldn't be messing with this stuff.

Nice device, lots of features, and unbeatable price, as far as I can tell. However, you can't read DC current with the clamp; you need to break the circuit to do that.
The analog meter read-out could be a challenge for less experienced users.
Good product, but they are not kidding when they say "for indoor use only!" Battery acid leak, and mine fried. Only get if you need light duty. I recommend a heavier-duty tester.
Very good product, as another review says -- just use the 3 or 15 amp scales and for 30 amps add a zero to the 3 amp reading...the only drawback is you can't check a appliance that plugs in without building an adapter. Very much worth every bit of it's price.

I am pretty good at doing math in my head so I wasn't really concerned about the other reviews. The fact is, it does have a scale so there really isn't any math you have to do. It has a scale for the 3 amp, 15 amp, and you can use the 3 amp for the 30 amp. Just add a zero on the end. What really surprised me was the quality of the instrament. I mean for the price you pay this thing is solid. Even the case is well made and that is a plus. I am not an electrician or in the electronics field. I wanted this to check things in my home to see what the actual draw was on things. I didn't realize the you can only use one wire to check the things with so I will have to make a test cord before I can use this for what I bought it for. I did, how ever, make checks on different voltages and this instrument was right on. For what Radio Shack asks for this instrument, you just can't go wrong. I think it is worth every penny with solid construction and acurate readings and a nice carrying case to boot.

Who will ever multiply a reading by a certain factor given in the manual for that range, is ridiculous. This is especially true when you're out in the field.

Don't like this one. You have to do way too much math to figure out the simple things. It won't just give you a straight answer. I took mine back.
