I used this to replace the LM386N-3 that had failed in my Vectrex (classic video game system). It's less powerful but works nicely.

I used it to make a low end guitar amp. It worke, but if you max out the gain, it sounds horrible. If you put a switch between the gain, its not so bad.

By itself this is a great amplifier with low distortion. If you have two, you can even build a stereo amplifier. However you're going to get a high frequency oscillation unless you take a potentiometer and connect the center tap to the capacitor that goes to the input on the IC and the two outside taps to ground and the input signal. Don't turn the volume up two loud either or you'll just get squelching.

This is an excelent chip for use in robotics. I've used it in many projects, including light/darkness followers, light/darkness seeking headbots, and many object avoiders. Good at driving small motors directly from output.

By Jeremiah R from Bloomington Indiana on 4/5/2007

I?ve been using this chip in small guitar amplifiers and pre-amps. I simply love it! It?s a bit mid heavy in tone but it?s not to hard to work around that with a good tone stack. I?ve used one of these to drive a full sized 4x12 guitar cabinet and it sounds great. I bought a huge handful of these and have a whole list of things I?d like to try with them. Great fun for not much cost.

By Dave W from Zion, IL on 2/21/2006
Pros:
Easy to use, Good performance, Good Value, Reliable

Best low cost monolithic audio out there. A mid-sized cap on the output (10uf @ 35V) drives a 1W 8ohm speaker with rather decent mid-range reponse and volume.
