Comments about RadioShack® Electronic and Hobby Soldering Kit:

I have only had one occasion to use the soldering iron since I bought it. That one time it worked great. I'm glad because now I'm thinking of lots of other hobby projects that I would like to try. I plan on getting a lot of use from it.

        Really needs heat control

Comments about RadioShack® Electronic and Hobby Soldering Kit:

The heat goes up to 860 degrees. The brass tips that come with the kit are only rated up to 750 degrees. What does this mean exactly? It means your brass tips that come in the kit will distort from the heat, since there is no way to keep the heat at 750 unless you stop using it after so many minutes.

So this soldering iron itself should only go up to 750, the brass tips should be some other higher temp metal, or this needs heat control. I will buy a heat control unit next time.

Comments about RadioShack® Electronic and Hobby Soldering Kit:

I use this soldering kit to repair electronic equipment at work, and I've gone through 2 of these in the last 5 months. I'm going after work to bring my current one back and get a new one. It only lasts as long as the tip it came with is in good condition. It breaks as soon as you try to change the tips, even though it's got the "capability" of exchanging tips. Don't buy this junk!

              • Minor Projects

Comments about RadioShack® Electronic and Hobby Soldering Kit:

I used this little iron a lot for about 4 months. The smaller size is a real plus for increased access and easier storage in a tool box. This iron gets very hot very quickly. I never seemed be short heat on most wiring and circuit components. The included tips cover a good range of needs but these tips do not last very long, ESPECIALLY if you clean your tip with a moist sponge. The ON/OFF switch is a good feature, especially because this iron will get particularly hot if left idle for even short periods of time. The plastic handle does a marginal job of heat insulation, and will get uncomfortably hot during continuous use. Because this iron is so light, it doesn't like to stay put without the cord pulling it some other way, even in a stand. Anyway, while unplugged and completely cool, this iron slid off the table (being tugged this directon by none other than its cord) and fall on the floor. After this happened, this iron was completely dead.

I was starting to really like this soldering iron until I was half way through repairing a circuit board. It suddenly stopped heating. I tried to exchange it at the store but they said the warranty was only 30 days. I thought I should be able to get a lot more than two uses out of it.
