Comments about RadioShack® AM/FM Pocket Radio:

This radio has great sound quality but very poor battery life. I cannot afford to use it because of the high volume of battery purchases I have reverted back to using the radio I hoped to replace with this one. Greatly disappointed.

Comments about RadioShack® AM/FM Pocket Radio:

I read a review about pocket radios comparing this RS to a Sony, Panasonic, Kaito, and Sangean and RS was better then all but the Sangean which tied it. I bought this and I am VERY happy with it. It gets AM stations stronger and clearer than my Panasonic, both used at the same time and same location for daytime signals. The tuning is different in that a station comes in in a couple of steps and locks in and never drifts, not gradually comes in like a normal analog tuner does. The radio sounds better for AM talk than FM music but this is not a major con for me. The FM on the RS also seems to be better than the Panasonic for signal strength. I mainly listen to AM, but use FM if I feel like hearing music. I would get this radio again if I needed another one. For what it costs, what it is, and how it works, you can't do much better than this radio.

Comments about RadioShack® AM/FM Pocket Radio:

Those who consider buying this AM/FM portable should know that this is technically a digital radio tuned mechanically. It utilizes the Silicon Labs DSP chip for the majority of its function apposed to many analog components. This chip is used in several Tecsun and Kaito portable radios, the difference in this one is it's a mechanically tuned CMOS. The Silicon Labs chip gives otherwise mediocre performing radios excellent sensitivity and selectivity. RadioShack should promote this as such and they would have an outstanding hot seller rather than a word of mouth sleeper.

Be aware that these type of radios don't tune like an average analog radio. Once the DSP chip detects a signal it will lock or "snap" onto it and no other fiddling is required. If the received stations volume appears low, ever so gently move the tuning dial up or down until the DSP locks onto the signal and the audio increases. At that point you shouldn't have to touch it again.

I plan on buying one or two more. Great tech in a low priced package.

Comments about RadioShack® AM/FM Pocket Radio:

Purchased this in the store and was amazed at the reception. Picking up stations my larger set misses and with no distortion. Has a rugged, durable feel and very acceptable sound with earbuds or headphone.

For the price, you can't go wrong. If you're looking for a quality, compact radio, this is it.

Comments about RadioShack® AM/FM Pocket Radio:

I was looking for a small, inexpensive portable radio and after reading reviews comparing similar models on other sites, I settled upon this one. You'll be hard-pressed to find a better price for something new of this size and quality either online or in a store, and the performance you'll receive should make it well worth what you pay for it.

What stands out for me is the sharpness of the tuning. It's a little different from the oldies in that stations don't come in gradually...they sort of "pop up" the way they might on some digital radios and they lock right in on that frequency, so you don't get the signal drift common in older transistor radios. A real bonus. The reception is good, too, and it sounds fine through headphones or earbuds with a decent bass response.

I should say this isn't a "perfect" radio in that the speaker quality is never more than so-so, although I'm not sure what more you should expect from a 2" monaural speaker, while the antenna does telescope, it can't be swung around and I'm not convinced it uses the best material as far as the plastic case holding it all together is concerned. However, these are relatively minor cons that shouldn't deter you from at least considering this one.

For a combination of cost, convenience and performance, you'll be hard-pressed to do better if you're looking for a small radio with a speaker to take on a road trip, camping, to the beach or just use in your shop or bathroom. It's definitely well worth the fifteen bucks you'll spend on it.

Comments about RadioShack® AM/FM Pocket Radio:

I must say this is by far the best handheld radio i have ever had. I came on here to buy another one as mine is slowing starting to wear down after having it for 8-9 years, yes i said 8-9 years.

Being used every day and paying 15$ is incredible. I would recommend this to anyone. For this item i can say you actually get more than you pay for.
