Don't listen to these other reviews. If they wouldn't skimp the extra $20 dollars and get this WHERE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO, or at least inspect it from another store, they would realize this isn't a bad scanner. For reception, I live at the top of one of the taller hills, so I get beautiful reception. I can hear handhelds and county cars within 15 miles in either direction. Anyone with half an ounce of common sense would know if you live in a low spot or live in a larger city, this isn't the best choice.

I'm writing this review saying; If you live in the country, I would recommend this. Especially if you live on top of a hill.(If you live at the bottom, the range for any handhelds in the area is obviously gonna be lower than if you were up high) If you live in the city, this isn't the one for you. Too much interference, you will need a scanner with more power and a better antenna to break through the noise.

This Scanner is easy to program, has good signal, no complaints at all..except this is the 2nd one I have had. With each one I bought the 2 year replacement warranty. Good thing. The first one quit working about a week or so before the 2 year warranty ran out. I got a replacement one and bought the 2 year warranty with it as well. 11 days after that warranty expired, it has quit working with batteries. Works fine with a power cord, but in power outages and bad weather like we just had, it doesn't help at all. I called the warranty people and because it was 11 days after the expiration, they wouldn't do ANYTHING!!!! Nothing. Didn't even offer to have this one looked at! I told them I was VERY unhappy and they just said "Sorry". Have been a very loyal Radio Shack customer for many years, but am re-thinking it now if this is how they back their products.

received this worthless piece of junk for a birthday present.wont make the same mistake twice.had factory defects and the store i bought at would,nt take it back.

I too have give this scanner a bad grade.
This thing doesnt pick up anything.
I have an old Bearcat that needed a battery so I purchased this instead. The Bearcat picks up transmissions when this one wont sitting side by side.

This scanner was not the one that I needed because if you want EMS on it you would need 800 MHz or more.

The audio on this thing is loud and clear better then any outher hand held rs scanner i have , The only problem i have with it is it is only dual conversion so the scanner seems to overload were i live. May be better if you live away from a big city with this scanner. Gre makes these scanners and i have read they have gone out of business so if you want one better get it soon there may not make any more 404s again

I can't believe it - I bought this in the store tonight and got it home and out of the box. No batteries and no power supply to plug it in. They must all be bought separately! I called the store and they confirmed, the unit itself can't be used at all without buying a power supply as well. They sell them useless and dead.

Just incredible. Hard to believe. It's going back to the store tomorrow morning at opening.

Very poor reception. I've had many scanners over the years and this is by far the worst. I live 5 minutes from my local police station. I should be able to hear them loud and clear and I can't. I have even more difficulty getting some of the other local cities with are only a few miles away.

Don't waste your money on this unit. I'm returning mine after only one day because it is so bad.
