Comments about ScienceWiz ScienceWhiz™ Inventions Experiment Kit:

This was fun and challenging. Definitely a lesson in patience and following directions carefully. Some of pictures of how it should look didn't match up with what the actual pieces included with the kit and some of the instructions are very vague. Still worth the effort.

Comments about ScienceWiz ScienceWhiz™ Inventions Experiment Kit:

We did the morse tapper. Kid liked that.

We did the radio....well. magnet wire is a pain in the butt. 24ga insulated is WAY easier to wind a coil with.

The schotky diode is acceptable but just.

I actually bought the thing for the earpiece and the diode. Expensive but I was desparate and the other experiments were kinda cool.

If you want to do a real xtal set, I suggest using the parts like I did, getting a 100' spool of 24ga wire and a few 47ohm resisters at the store. Go to a website and look up "oatbox crystal sets". My xtal set gets one station very well! Kid digs it!

Comments about ScienceWiz ScienceWhiz™ Inventions Experiment Kit:

My son built the radio but all we could get was static. The scotty diode is of poor qulaity. The radio would be better if there was a power supply and speaker instead of just the ear piece. I would suggest adding a speaker and battery assembly to this product package as well as stronger (more powerful) magnetic wire and a better diode. However the information and educational value is great. One understands how it works and why. From an educational standpoint the information is great. I would suggest using this book to help make your project board and use the FM Radio Model 280-0008 as a more modern example which actually works and you are able to get several FM radio stations. Looking back that is what I should have done to compare the before and after radios.

Comments about ScienceWiz ScienceWhiz™ Inventions Experiment Kit:

It's been almost a decade since I first got this exact same kit in third grade. Good god does this bring back memories seeing that it is still available. Just goes to show that this truly stood the test of time.

I had a lot of fun with the generator. Seriously, I didn't know that a small electric motor is all you need! Just wrap the thread and pull as fast as possible, nothing else to it.

The radio project was most memorable. Ended up using a shoe box lid instead of a cardboard sheet. Walking around the house with a box lid, wires hanging out and all, saying "Yeah, it's a radio!" confused everyone else at home.

But yeah, this is a must have for anyone old enough to read. Pure and simple. What surprised me about the version of the kit available today is that it no longer appears to feature a wizard anywhere in the graphic design of the kit's cover. Maybe they didn't want to give the impression that there was "magic" involved, or maybe I'm too paranoid about scientism.
