piece of junk does not do p25 well

Comments about Whistler WS1040 Digital Handheld Scanner:

This is the same as the GRE pro 106 with a new name silk screened on the panel. Whistler bought GRE and re-released the same product with no improvements except a new color housing. It does not do digital p25 well at all, particularly simulcast systems which most are. The 700 and 800 mhz sensitivity are horrible. I work in the news media and have a fleet of these as well as the mobile model GRE PSR600 which is the same piece of junk with a bigger speaker. I know how to program them and I am very familiar with trunked radio systems. Don't waste your money until all the scanner manufacturers including Uniden build a reliable digital scanner. I have spent months trying to get the GRE made and weeks trying to get the same Whistler made units to work reliably on various Bay Area P 25 digital systems such as EBRCS, Marin MERA, Oakland, and now San Mateo County's new system. My engineering counterparts at other TV stations are also experiencing the same frustration. I have even taken my GRE-made units to the GRE repair facility in Belmont (before it closed) he he was not able to make them work any better

It's a fine scanner. And will give some competition to the other scanner manufacturer that sold it's last model lacking all the promised software.
