Comments about RadioShack True-RMS 46-Range Digital Multimeter:

When you read what this meter can do it sounds like a dream come true: everything you ever wanted in a multimeter with a price tag like this. I had to buy it!

When I started to work with it I was getting a little disappointed though: the unit has a slightly flimsy feel to it, perhaps because its so light. The test leads are nice but rather large for measuring small items like computer plugs. The variety of what you can measure is mind boggling: temperature, capacitance, even clock speeds!

But perhaps therein lies the problem: it can measure all these things, but none of the ranges are enough to satisfy the enthusiast: for example, capacitance can be measured up to 60 uF - that's nowhere near what my components are. Yet capacitance was a big selling point for me. Temperature is a nice addition, but again my freezer is colder than what the unit can measure. Clock speed is in there too. But 4MHz isn't all that much if you're dealing with microelectronics.

Voltage and resistance works fine and is very accurate, but I miss a bit more intelligence from this meter: auto range can be temperamental, and you have to manually specify if you're measuring AC or DC voltage. My other $30 RadioShack Pocket Meter does this automatically.

This could be a really good multimeter if it would offer wider ranges for the exotic add ons.

Very Nice, Needs Higher PC Sampling Rate

          By Jim Lewis

          from San Antonio, TX

          Pros

          • accurate measurement
          • Great price

          Cons

          • Just Catii Rated
          • Pc Software Just Ok
          • Thermocouple Temp Limits

          Best Uses

          • Good All-around Multimete

Comments about RadioShack True-RMS 46-Range Digital Multimeter:

Got for PC interface. Sampling rate range is once per second to once every 60 seconds, nothing faster in PC "oscilloscope" graphing. Would be much better to set sample limit and have MUCH higher sampling rates since meter itself can count up to 4 MHz (at low voltage). Reads DC voltage and resistance within 1% of my Fluke 289. Display looks great! Thermocouple not usable at > 140 deg F for extended periods so don't count on using for anything very hot! HELP file for PC interface not working properly in Win8.1 but interface so simple don't really need HELP. Overall nice product at a great price!

          Good, but different.

          By Matt M

          from Fredericksburg, VA

          Pros

          • Automatic Logging
          • Temperature Measurement

          Cons

          • Proprietary Connector

          Best Uses

Comments about RadioShack True-RMS 46-Range Digital Multimeter:

I have the previous version of this -- the 22-812 model. I was wanting a second unit to take automatic simeltanious measurements of votlage and current on my projects. This is every bit as good as the original - and better...but I like the old one better.

One major improvement - this has thermocouple / temperature measurement built in and the probe is included. This is a wonderful improvement.

            Complaints:
Biggest complaint -- this uses a proprietery USB cable (USB-A to USB-A) instead of a standard A-B cable or RS232 like the original. I wish it was a standard interface. I may try and make an adapter that I can leave connected or replace the USB connector but I'll have to investigate it more.

Second complaint -- the software is a slightly tweaked version of the same thing...BUT the meter is just different enough the old software won't work on the new meter and vice versa. I wish I could have one version of "MeterView" for both.

Comments about RadioShack True-RMS 46-Range Digital Multimeter:

This is a great meter for the price. The only downside is that when I opened a box that had been sold as new, I discovered the meter had been previously opened, was dirty, and the probes had all been unwrapped and not put back as new. The store manager is going to make it right, but now I have to wait two days to get something that I purchased today. Radio Shack has gone so far downhill that I'm not sure it can be saved unless you want cellphones.

Comments about RadioShack True-RMS 46-Range Digital Multimeter:

You know, Radio Shack has always been near & dear to my heart. I grew up seeing this company go from selling Heathkit projects, good stereo equipment, CB radios & more so I'm not posting this to bash them.

However, as a second year Electronics Student, I needed a decent multi-meter that would read true RMS, had a thermocouple to measure temperature, a transister Gain tester, and also a capacitance meter.

I checked their website and found this meter in stock at my local store. Went to pick it up after school the next day, brought it home, and when I put the batteries in it and turned it on, NO DISPLAY!!!! The thing beeped at every button push, but the LCD display....DEAD.

I don't know, I realize electronics manufacturing is a complicated matter, but still, Quality Control exists to keep this kind of thing from reaching the end user (the Consumer). For this reason I'm giving this product a "Thumbs Down"

Sorry, Shack, I used to be a Faithful Customer, but after this, I don't feel good about trying more of your products. I'm in the middle of a MAJOR project, and I needed this meter ASAP... So now I wil be returning it to the store I purchased it at.
