I have been using this hub for a year and a half. I performs perfect. I have a 2TB external HDD W/D my book, a 1TB external Toshiba HDD, my mouse and a thumb drive connected and have had no problems. Why people knock a good product is beyond me. Mean spirited people is all I can think. The reason I looked this hub up is to see if it was still in Radio Shack inventory so I could get another one.

I am surprised with all of the bad reviews. This product works splendidly on my laptop which is a Mac. At one point I had 3 external Drives plugged into it with a total of something like 5 terabytes of data on them combined in the forth port I had another USB Hub. But the little guy just chugged along and held its own even when pushed so hard.
It worked so well on my mac I bought one for the PC I use every once and a while. But, when I used it with my PC and plugged in two Thumb Drives the thing went nuts. When I tried it on my Mac it worked like the charm I had known it as.
So, as weird as it sounds, maybe it just is more compatible with Macs.

Hubs are not simple Y adapters. There is electronics inside of them, performing port assignments, detection, and digital stuff like that.

Ever since the beginning of time, it has never been safe to plug an external hard drive into a hub. The advice has always been that external hard drives shall be plugged directly into a USB port on the computer.

You will notice that there are two issues that people are having with this hub. 1) Reliability, and 2) Trouble when they plug hard drives into it. If anyone has success plugging an external hard drive into this hub, they are only lucky. Probably won't last -- I still recommend taking one of the other doodads out of one of the computer USB sockets, and plug the external drive directly into the computer. Take the doodad and move it to the hub.

If Reliability weren't a problem, the hub would be acting properly, 5-out-of-5 stars. It can accept thumb drives, sound-card dongles, bluetooth dongles, mice, keyboards, webcams, and WiFi adapters (assuming 100 Mbits/sec is fast enough for you).

Just not external hard drives.

If the retail-packaging that came with [any brand of] hubs mentioned the external hard drive limitation, and therefore no one had incorrect expectations, the only problem with this hub would be that it fails before it's a year old, but only has a 90 day warranty.

The unit is not properly shielded against electromagnetic interference. It resets frequently. I would not recommend to use it with storage devices.

This was a gift from my son and i'm glade that i got it. and i would get this as a gift for anybody.

I tried to hook up two external HD. One was fine but adding the second caused the first HD to dismount. This hub can not sustain power to more than one large current drawing accessory. Beware.

I threw this hub in the garbage. From the start, it would lose power/connection nearly daily, with only a mouse and keyboard attached. That was whether it was connected to a desktop with A/C power, a laptop with A/C power or a laptop running on battery power. I would have data errors on hard drives connected through this, even though those hard drives had their own independent power source.
