Set-up Issues!!

By Bonbon

Pros

  • Good Price
  • Works fine

Cons

  • Difficult To Set Up
  • Poor instructions

Best Uses

  • Home network

Comments about NETGEAR® Wireless- N Router:

I've had this router for a week now and it's working fine. HOWEVER, it was impossible for me (and my husband) to connect and install, because the instructions were so difficult to understand. I finally called a local computer geek who came out and did the job, for a fee, but he said that the instructions were so bad that he didn't even bother loooking at them. He just hooked everything up from his own general knowledge of computers and other devices. I would not recommend this product to anyone who is not a computer expert, like me, because you'll end up paying more for the installation than the router is worth!

Comments about NETGEAR® Wireless- N Router:

I've installed probably 50 routers in my life. I can diagnose and repair most problems. Today i wasted an hour of my own time then an additional hour on the phone with tech support. My problem was the with the router aquiring an ip address. I told him I already power cycled and ensured the IP address settings were correct. So he walked me through a power cycle. Not a good start. He was obviously just reading prompts and after an hour determined that it was my modem. So to prove a point I plugged in the old router and gained access to the Internet immediately. He said to call my ISP and bridge the modem... So I bridged the modem. Still didn't work... Not spending another minute on it. I read a few reviews that had similar issues. Unfortunately it seems to be luck of the draw with these.

Comments about NETGEAR® Wireless- N Router:

The setup instruction is real vague. This will save some hassle: There is NO GENIE CD -and- you don't need one anymore. The download manual is woefully outdated. Read THIS: http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=19300 and get the GENIE software HERE: http://www.netgear.com/landing/en-us/netgear-genie.aspx That ought to get you up and running and you can refine your settings later.I used a PC running Win Vista 32 bit OS for the setup. Some people said that GENIE won't run on Win XP, but it *does* run on my Win XP machine with Media Center 2002 version with Service Pack 3. It also works well on Win7 64 bit. I downloaded GENIE from that Netgear site for all my PCs.I went to [@] to get a cheap $29 router. The salesman talked me out of that N150 and said to get this WNR2000 N300 instead. I was skeptical and a little miffed that I let myself be persuaded. But, he was right and this product meets my needs better, for not much more money.I live in a huge Victorian farmhouse and I can still get 3-4 bars wireless signal strength indoors or outdoors, at the very back of the house. The router is located in a 2nd floor front BR, this is a long 2-storey home with wood floors and 1" thick horsehair plaster walls. I have Time Warner cable Internet with a Motorola SURFboard SB5101 cable modem. My WNR2000 is version 3.So, buy your WNR2000 today and roam about the house.

So very easy to set up that I never used the CD. Had wife watching netflix in 5 minutes.
Been building computers since 1997 and this is a great product for the $$$$.
When replacing an old wireless router use old SSID and passwords and you are done.
Change router logan from netgrear and password to protect yourself.
Ran a wireless security check using cox tools and passed.
Bottom line this is a great router for the money and so easy to set up even a caveman can do it.

Comments about NETGEAR® Wireless- N Router:

I bought this router because reviews and advertising said it was easy to set up. Sorry. The directions in the setup wizard were not only confusing, but just plain wrong. For example, it says to contact your internet provider for certain information that is actually on your computer. I've set up networks in the past, and never had this much trouble. I exchanged this unit for a Linksys, which I installed in mere minutes.

Radio Shack showed router $20 off for a sale price of [$] and in shopping around that is the regular price at all competitive stores and the next product up is only $69 which is a better unit. Would recommend the Netgear N300 Wireless Gigabit router for $69.00.

I bought this product like yesterday and decided to hook it up and it gave such a hard time it kinda works when it's wired to my PC but when I tried it wireless it won't even connect properly. I tried everything and even tried to install it twice and it still didn't work. I tried to even reset my modem and all of that jazz. This router is bad and not user friendly at all. I rather stick with my broken router for now. Thanks a lot Netgear for wasting 3 hours of my life.
