Once MD tuned the needle movement and noise levels were in the opposite directions from those indicated in instruction manual; i.e. At maximum discrimination the sensor failed to discriminate between ferrous (Fe) and precious metal (Au), whereas good discrimination at minimum setting on discrimination knob. Although that is the exact opposite of that indicated in the instructions, MD still performed to an acceptable level. Questionable circuit design based on requiring a background noise to have to disappear if metal detected in ground. That along with the reverse mode assembly failed to excite me with operation of MD 3500. Perhaps I should have gone for a more sophisticated MD!

I have one of these with a different model number but it's the exact same detector. I got this from a guy at work. It was brand new and it works fantastic. You have to read the instructions FIRST before using it. The needle will point to the left and no sound will be heard if it finds ferrous metal...something a magnet will pick up. If it detects non-ferrous metal like gold or silver jewelry or coins, the needle will point to the right and sound will increase. There should be no mistake seperating junk metal from valuable treasure and coins. I found a dime 5 inches deep in the ground and other coins at 2 to 4 inches. This detector really impressed me. You have to work with it and learn how it operates. It's not hard if you take the time. Read the manual till you understand it. Now go find those lost coins!

I gave this as a give for my 10 year old neice, I was hoping for something a little more simple for her to use, but she does like it.

So far we have only found nails and bottle caps (under sand and leaves) but are looking forward to finding better "treasures" when the weather warms up! Works as advertised - emits sound until it picks up metal (I think it should be the other way around but...) - easy to use and not very heavy.

first time i used , i want to cry for the money i put ! Stop but when i focus the guide deeply and after many tests, i was stupify by the result .. i found many and many valuable stuff ,but i advice people who use this device to concentrate on the headers not on the speaker.

I read the reviews and was hoping it was like the little orange detector i had from Radio Shack when i was a kid. However the detector i got for my son was not even close. It couldn't detect any metal beyond 1/4 inch. The winning characteristic was when it hit a target, it stopped making noise. While searching, it was constant static after tuning according to the directions. It also stated that there would be constant static in the owners manual, but not on the website, this was a big disappointment to me and also for my son whom i had psyched up for the [...] arrival. It was repackaged and sent back the next day.

When I came across this affordable metal detector last Christmas, I had to buy it. Always wanted one! To be fair, winter is really just ending where I live, so I haven't had much time to play yet. I can say that it was accurate and efficient enough to sort through a massive pile of construction debris to find a ring. Dead on, every time. It takes some getting used to as far as calibrating goes, but it is easy to use once you figure it out. My two year old hasn't been able to break it yet (and that is quite a feat!), and she loves to watch us search for and find buried treasure! All in all, for the price, I find the value to be excellent, and I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Ordered to find a hidden bolt in the lawn, but after hours of searching a backyard lawn, gave up after finding other things buried in the dirt, but unable to find what it was ordered for in the first place. Had trouble to determine actual metal found and false alarms.
