Comments about Gigaware 6-ft. USB-A to Serial Cable:

    To use in Linux:
    1. Connect USB to Serial cable to device and PC.
    2. Open a terminal CLI session.
    3. use dmesg | grep tty to find Serial/USB port.
    4. should be something like "ttyUSB0".
    5. open PuTTY, minicom or other console client as root (e.g. sudo putty).
    6. Open a serial connection to the device.
    7. e.g. Serial line = "dev/ttyUSB0".
    8. Speed = 9600.

This worked for me to connect to Cisco switches and routers via the console port. YMMV. Check this link for more info: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CiscoConsole

Comments about Gigaware 6-ft. USB-A to Serial Cable:

Works fine with windows 7 and 8. I have also used it on XP and Vista. Install the driver before plugging in the device! The latest driver that is available for download is for Vista. If you are installing it on 7 or 8 use the following instructions. Once you have unzipped the file, navigate to the Vista folder and open it. Right click on the SETUP.exe and select properties. Then select the compatibility tab, then select the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" check box. Once this has been done the previously greyed out dropdown menu will allow you to select "Windows Vista". Then Click Ok and you should be ready to install the driver. If you want you can once again right click on SETUP.exe and select "Run as Administrator". You may need to restart your computer. After all of this you should be good to go. Make sure it is recognized under "Devices" as "Radio Shack usb to serial". Best of luck.

No Windows 7 Driver is provided, and the device does not work properly with Windows 7. This is obsolete equipment and should not be sold for this use.

I'm using this device with metrology products and it has worked with no problems. The drivers are set up automatically without even needing the CD that it comes with. I use a null modem adapter and gender changer typically, and then I don't need to use a serial cable. This is the only adapter I've used that has worked bidirectionally with no issues.

I used this product as the console cable for Adtran and Cisco switches/routers. It worked on my Win 7 notebook for several months. One problem that I had was that it did not retain the same COM port ID. Recently, it stopped working. Now the notebook does not recognizes the device.

Comments about Gigaware 6-ft. USB-A to Serial Cable:

Am running Windows 7 64 bit and had no troubles with this device. Plugged it in and, after about 30 seconds of thinking about it, the OS found and installed the correct driver. Not sure why so many are having troubles with it.

There were also no unopened packages on the shelf at the store, suggesting it is not a major problem (anymore?).

I DO use Windows Update regularly, resulting in the most current copy of the Windows OS.
