Even if your computer does have a serial port, this cable might be an attractive alternative, since it provides added convenience.

  • Adapts serial peripherals such as some digital cameras, modems and PDAs to your computer's USB port
  • Gold-plated connectors reduce interference and improve signal
  • Compatible with Windows® 7, Windows Vista®, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows 98SE

Comments about Gigaware® 6-ft. USB-A to Serial Cable:

I used this for both Cisco and later Juniper consoles....Took a long time to get the right driver to get this thing working in the first place. I have tried to findout what chipset it uses with no luck. It stoped working reliably with Cisco and Juniper console sessions and started sending the wrong characters 3 out of 4 trys. I am using a new USB-Serial Converter now which uses the FT232R chipset. Works great and has indicator lights and works great with terminal's standard screen /dev command for both cisco and juniper.

Comments about Gigaware® 6-ft. USB-A to Serial Cable:

The chipset within the cable is a older chipset that is not compatible with MS Windows 8. Even if you install the newest driver, it will not work. Need to find a USB to Serial connector that uses a FTDI chipset, which is compatible with MS Windows 8.

I've tried several times to load "Windows 7" drivers and the drivers will not load. After researching around on the web I determined that the drivers may work for the 32 bit version of Windows 7 but they definitely DO NOT work on the 64 bit version.

Used this cord to upgrade the firmware on my Harman Kardon AVR 354. Had no issues getting drivers using Windows 7 64-bit. As soon as I connected the cord to my PC, Windows automatically started downloading the driver.

Comments about Gigaware® 6-ft. USB-A to Serial Cable:

This cable works well. Initially, when I plugged it in, my windows 7 machine did not find the drivers. I tried to install the software using the disc, but it said the install was unsuccessful. I unplugged the cable and plugged it back into another USB port. Immediately, the message popped up saying device installed successfully and told me the COM port (COM5). It works perfectly now.

Comments about Gigaware® 6-ft. USB-A to Serial Cable:

Plugged it into a USB port on my Win7 Pro PC & it found & installed the driver without any action from me. When finished, a screen popped up indicating that it was using COM6, which is exactly what I needed to know. I use it for a PLC application (HVAC Controllers). I have perfect communication between the controllers & the software on my PC, just as if it were using an actual serial port.
