    Only lights when on.

Comments about RadioShack SPST 20A/12VDC Illuminated Toggle Switch with Blue LED:

Sometimes, you may want the switch to light all the time, instead of only when on. This switch is not like that.

Correct diode part number is 1N4148, not 1N4145 as stated in my previous post. Wiring diagram is provided below to correctly connect the "suppression" diode and the 1K resistor I used to lower the switch handle brightness.

Another possible cause of LED failure

Comments about RadioShack SPST 20A/12VDC Illuminated Toggle Switch with Blue LED:

Another possible cause of the LED failure is when using this switch to control an inductive load, such as a relay for fog lights. Adding a "suppression" diode across the relay coil winding will prevent the high voltage spike when the switch is set of off and the relay releases. A 1N4145 signal diode (also available from RadioShack) will suppress this damaging voltage spike.

Comments about RadioShack SPST 20A/12VDC Illuminated Toggle Switch with Blue LED:

Nice switch overall. The toggle throw is very short, which is good for tight spaces but not so good for a visual of whether it's on or off (but that's why it's illuminated, right? ;-). Switch mechanism feels a bit fragile. VERY bright LED. As MicroZapMan notes, put a resistor between the ground lug on the switch and your system ground to dim it (I'm using 10k). In fact, you should ALWAYS have some sort of a bias resistor in line with a LED. Other reviewers who've had their LEDS burn out may not have done this, and I suspect there's not an internal one.

Comments about RadioShack SPST 20A/12VDC Illuminated Toggle Switch with Blue LED:

Use a 4.7k resistor between ground contact and 12V negative to dim LED to more acceptable brightness.
LED also functions with 5 volts.

This switch was promising, gave off a good color and was quite functional. Unfortunately, The LED in the switch is no longer functional. The switch is still turning the unit off and on. But the light is history.

Comments about RadioShack SPST 20A/12VDC Illuminated Toggle Switch with Blue LED:

It worked great and was very bright for the first week or so. Then the LED started to get dimmer and started flickering, then just quit altogether. It still works, but now the light does not work, which is the entire reason I bought a lighted switch.
