Comments about Weller®/Portasol® Self-igniting Cordless Butane Solder Iron:

I love butane soldering irons and use little else. These will last around a year as they are now. If you want something really reliable try to find an older style one with the striker on the lid. I've had the old style for around 8 years and it is still as good as ever. I bought this to show the wife how to solder. Had to buy another because as someone else said it clogs after awhile and is then useless. For the price it is a valuable add on to any diyer

Comments about Weller®/Portasol® Self-igniting Cordless Butane Solder Iron:

I purchased this iron about 2 1/2 years ago and it still works great. I use it at work at least once a month. Heats up nicely and will solder a 14guage wire fairly easy with a little effort. Any guage smaller and it's a piece of cake. I'm writing this review because I looked up where to purchase for a coworker and couldnt resist.

Comments about Weller®/Portasol® Self-igniting Cordless Butane Solder Iron:

I've owned about a half dozen of these torches and one of two things always happens. A; The sparker quits working. Never had this problem with the old style manual sparker.
B; The foam in the fuel cell breaks down which plugs the orifice rendering the torch unrepairable and useless. I have two dead ones in my drawer and another I'm sending for warranty on sparker. Yet it must be a fairly descent design because I keep buying them.

This is a great product. I must point out that soldering iron uses PPT tips for P2C Weller soldering irons made by Cooper Industries. I'd ask Radio Shack first if they can order them. If not you can get them from several sources. I highly recommend this iron. Have fun!

Comments about Weller®/Portasol® Self-igniting Cordless Butane Solder Iron:

MAJOR FLAW!!! Accessories (tips) are not available. It's a great tool, forth one that I have owned of this type. However, the accessories (nine different tips)listed on the package as available ARE NOT. I contacted the US supplier, Radio Shack, and emailed the factory in Ireland and have yet to get a reply from any of them as to availability of the tips.

If you just want a cordless soldering iron its great. But if you need to use as mini-torch, tubing shrinking, or really tight ckt. bd. work don't bother with this one. Go for the kit model.

This is a fine tool for light to medium duty soldering. It comes shipped without a gas refill but you can use Ronson lighter refills from the drugstore, very handy.
