Comments about RadioShack Banana Plug 4.0mm Diameter (2-Pack):

I am not sure why many could not figure out how to use or disassemble this connector, I guess as I build many of my own cables from scratch everything from simple 1/4 TRS to Neutrik XLR's, this was simple for me, I have been soldering for over 20 years and this was cake.

I would say you do need some soldering experience yes ... but I do not feel you need advanced experience. any one with a good iron and basic skills should be fine, do not rush.

The connectors simply unscrew from the hard rubber sleeve to reveal a small solder cup. Strip the wire tin it, then slide the sleeve onto the cable, place the wire in the solder cup and solder the 2 together let it cool, slide the sleeve down and then screw it the rest of the way for a nice tight fit.

I have found that the sleeve and the design of this connector is a perfect match for Monster Cable XP compact speaker cable, and provides a nice tight secure fit as if it was molded to the cable after correct assembly.

I recommend this connector if you build your cables using Monster XP or similar HQ cable.

It will not fit any of the thicker cables no matter what the package my say.

I hope this will help others decide if this connector is the right choice for them.

Comments about RadioShack Banana Plug 4.0mm Diameter (2-Pack):

Without these customer comments, there are no "how-to" instructions in the package. I've built 36 or more Heathkit audio, amateur radio and test bench devices, but could only guess how to dismantle this banana plug without breaking it! I would only recommend this banana plug to a friend if skilled in soldering and if I could inform him or her how to open the plug first.

Comments about RadioShack Banana Plug 4.0mm Diameter (2-Pack):

I bought these to use to connect a power supply to a piece of electronic equipment. The package stated that they accept up to 12 gauge wire, which is what I am using. These will definitely NOT fit on a 12 gauge wire. If you are using smaller gauge (16 or possibly 14) these will probably be OK. Packaging is clearly a LIE.

Some BASIC instructions would have been nice. I'm pretty handy in general construction, but the 1st two reviews (12 ga. won't fit, and high-level soldering skills required) have me concerned. Thanks to the review who pointed out how to remove the plastic (hold silver end and unscrew). At least now I have a fair chance.

Comments about RadioShack Banana Plug 4.0mm Diameter (2-Pack):

The plug itself is well made. Another review asked how to separate the plastic... the answer is to rotate it while pulling... it sort of screws.

The big problem is the solder connection. First off, there's no way you're gonna get 12 gauge in the 'cup'. And if you don't have a soldering iron that's at least 40W, forget it - it will never heat up enough for the solder to flow into the cup. Very poor design in this regard.

Whoever determined these things would accept a 12AWG wire is clearly clueless. You'd be LUCKY to get a 16AWG wire in this thing without strands hanging over the edge...

What a collossal waste of my drive time and money.

Comments about RadioShack Banana Plug 4.0mm Diameter (2-Pack):

I like these plugs, I'm using them on my 100 Watt Ham Radio HF Antenna Tuner Output and I'd buy the same plug again.

The Plastic cover unscrews leaving a small "cup" where the wire is pushed in like on a butt splice. I had to trim 3 individual strands from my 12-Ga Stranded wire for it to fit. The wire then held in place tightly in the cup and soldering was easy. I used a clean and solder whetted soldering iron tip, heated the wire and connector properly first and then applied the solder. The plastic cover was pushed way back on the wire so it wouldn't melt. The solder flowed right into the banana plug cup and then filled the wire strands. It was like a dream.

The Banana Plug is providing good connectivity to my 70ft horizontal random length wire antenna. The system is receiving and transmitting quite nicely through the Banana Plug.

                                      1. use pliers to hold banana terminal at base flange (metal lip against the plastic housing).
                                      2. spin plastic housing to release.
                                      3. insert wire, solder, replace plastic housing.

                                      :D
had me worried when I read the reviews, since this was the only banana plugs in-store that would accept smaller than 12 gauge wire, like I was using for my project. not so complicated, I guess. happy now that I know I can definitely use it.

I looked this part up on the internet prior to purchase. The description said it would accept up to 12 gauge wire. I tried to use 12 gauge wire that was too large. Whoever tested this for Radio Sham needs to find other work or supply a video showing how much conductor they needed to remove to make 12 gauge wire fit.
