Comments about RadioShack PRO-164 1000-Channel Handheld Scanner:

Bought this scanner after reading reviews. Found that it is very easy to program and reception is good. I live in a valley and it has no problem getting calls. I have used it in vehicles and it has clear reception. I have had many scanners and this one is by far the best one I have owned.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-164 1000-Channel Handheld Scanner:

I have been a Firefighter and Rescue Medic for over 20 yrs. This is one of the best portable Scanners on the market though you need to upgrade the stock antenna with the replacement rubber duck receives much clear and over longer distance. I found manual programming much easier than using the PC connection This Scanner is the only Scanner listed by other mail order companies that primarly sell, Uniden, Bearcat & Cobra.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-164 1000-Channel Handheld Scanner:

We selected this scanner to use in an emergency management application. It seems to be reasonably well constructed and is compact enough for the above use. It has impressive capabilities packed into a small container. However, you must work with it frequently to maintain proficiency, the user interface is complex and non-intuitive. It's not a peice of equipment you pull out of the box and in 10-15 minutes you have mastered its operation! It takes many hours and the complex sequence of key strokes can get confusing. Not a novice scanner! Definitly for the experienced operator.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-164 1000-Channel Handheld Scanner:

I wouldn't recommend clipping this scanner to your belt on the back of your pants. The antenna connection is weak and flimsy and not covered under warranty. The reception is okay, it's not the greatest here in Northeast Ohio, as cell phone tower and larger metal objects with interfere with the reception.

On the good side it was easy to program, and the controls were easy use, before the antenna receiver broke.

I bought this scanner online. When it came the speaker had a little hissing noise but the screen would not work at all. I called the help line and was told I could return it to a local store. The sales person at the store told me he would send it in for repairs with a 20$ process fee plus repairs cost. They refused to give me a replacement even though It was brand new. Now I'm just sending it back through the mail to Texas. This has been a frustrating experience.

Comments about RadioShack PRO-164 1000-Channel Handheld Scanner:

Alright, this scanner is an amazing product. Besides when I had to learn how to use it, I never had any problems with it. It's very durable, can easily be dropped onto a hard rock surface and no damage whatsoever. I use it almost every day to listen to local railroads and emergency crews in my town and it never lets me down. Until the battery dies every few weeks, a little more often than I would hope. I plan on getting an adapter so it will use the outlet power rather than batteries and my friend has one for his scanner and it's a worthwhile purchase with the scanner. The 1000 channels also come in handy so I will not have to worry about running out of room of frequencies. It's a great, long-term investment that won't let you down, as long as you have spare batteries.

I'm involved with emergency services support. I have use the trunking capabilities of this scanner prior to rebanding ... I had the unit upgraded and I've programmed it using the computer cable. I know how to program it manually, but not for the rebanded trunking system. It still won't scan the rebanded trunking systems I listen to and I'm getting pretty discourages. I wish someone would provide better information to make this scanner work again.
