Comments about Garmin® nüvi 2557 LMT 5"" Receiver:
My previous GPS was a Magellan 4250 Maestro which I used while driving an 18 wheeler. Since I was very comfortable with the 4250, I was hesitant to switch to Garmin but now have no regrets.
The start-up and satellite acquisition time of the Garmin 2557 LMT (2013 model) is impressive! Also I really enjoy the lane assist feature and didn't realize that it works on metro surface streets, as well as on highways. The photo realistic exit split view is great and the voice directions are accurate and timely. Not only does the 2557 provide voice prompts for landmarks but also provides a second voice prompt for the street name to turn on. This is great, since you can see the landmark far ahead and as you get close to the street to turn on, a second voice confirmation gives the street name to make the turn on. So if you miss a turn, one must not be paying very close attention! (Landmark turn assist and traffic warnings appear to only work in metro areas.)
So far I have had only one chance to check-out the live traffic warnings and sure enough there was a slow down just where it said there would be one from 5 miles away. This was the only slow down I have been in so far, since I have been to Phoenix only two times with the Garmin.
Now the most important part. The database of street names and addresses. The 4250 Maestro had the streets in my rural area but no address numbers. The 2557 has both way out here!
Since I travel to customer's homes, this comprehensive database comes in real handy! The other day I went to a home that is really far out in the boon docks where there are just a few homes here and there and sure enough the 2557 led me right to the drive way. Needless to say, after that experience, I'm really impressed with the 2557!
So far I have found every residential address and non-residential destination in the database except for the state DMV office in my local town. The 2557 has led me to dozens of places since first powering up the 2557 almost two months ago.
My only small gripes is that the included windshield mount doesn't allow locking down the unit to the viewing angle one wants and gets out of kilter easily when removing the unit from the bracket. Also, the on-line database update with the Garmin software was dang slow! It took in the order of 4.0 - 5.0 hours to download 3-4 gigabytes of data on broadband connection. Lastly it would have been nice to have a vinyl pouch to store the unit in when taken off the mount for security reasons. I'm really picking here but that is all the negatives I have noted in the first couple months of heavy use.
Lastly, to any Magellan users contemplating switching, you may be happy to find out that you can get the blue 3D triangle icons (instead of one of the silly cars) which mark your location on the route just like on the Magellan. Grab that icon and the new woman's American voice when you connect the unit online to update the database. Finally, when updating the database it is really safe to walk away (just as the software says) while the download and install process takes place over several hours.
Bottom line: Solid navigation performance, great features and affordable price for the mid-tier 2557.
