Not a "Travel" Radio

By Mike

Pros

  • Lightweight

Cons

Comments about RadioShack Compact Portable AM/FM/Shortwave Radio:

This is billed as a "travel radio", but unless there is a secret undocumented procedure for switching the AM tuning to 9 kHz steps, don't travel with it outside the western hemisphere. It'll just be extra junk you don't need in your luggage.

The FM section is likewise limited to the American 200 kHz channel spacing.

      Sigh.

Comments about RadioShack Compact Portable AM/FM/Shortwave Radio:

Had it in the cab of my PU behind seat. Something melted and oozed out of it. Would not work after that. This was in WV not AZ so I'd rate it as not very durable.

Comments about RadioShack Compact Portable AM/FM/Shortwave Radio:

Don't let batteries completly die, or be slow changing them... you can lose your station presets! Write down which is which, then you can re-set them if needed. A minor gkich for me.

Comments about RadioShack Compact Portable AM/FM/Shortwave Radio:

Dual time suggests it is "universal", but it is not usable in Australia on the AM band where stations are separated by 9 KHz whereas the radio frequency tunes in 10 KHz steps. Needs to have a selector for 9 KHz or 10 KHz steps as have seen in universal radios. FM and Shortwave bands are Ok; dual-time is excellent; other features are Ok after learning how to set the time and storing stations.

Comments about RadioShack Compact Portable AM/FM/Shortwave Radio:

Pitiful radio. We live in a small town where we have 5-6 stations but for more choice, we listen to channels in the big city ~60 miles away. Every radio I've owned as far back the 1940s (portable, personal, car radios, home stereos) will deliver dozens of stations - except this one and a $5 discount store radio once took a chance on.

Took it back and bought a Grundig G8. MUCH better radio although that radio as a big necessary world time feature with a big dial to choose the time zone. Sound and reception is outstanding though.

I have two of these--one in the shop I have had for several years which I love. Then THIS one I just bought--sound quality is terrible and the volume adjustment is bascially non existant--not a good buy, not at all. I HOPE to be able to return it and try something else.

Comments about RadioShack Compact Portable AM/FM/Shortwave Radio:

Radio was difficult from the start. Presets wouldn't stay preset. Finally got it to work and it lasted less than 3 months. Just stopped working. Won't turn on and is completely unresponsive. If I can't return it, it's headed for the junk pile.
